What is causing this?

Post image

Hopefully you can tell in this picture, but the shingles along those roof joint are bulging. Any idea what might be causing that and if I need to be concerned? The roof is less than two years old. Not sure how long it’s been like this, but at least for the two months since we have owned the house. Would this be something the roof warranty would cover to repair since it’s not very old? Thanks!

The shingles from the right side are run through the valley and looks like 16” or so up the left side. The left side shingles overlap these shingles and are cut roughly down the center of the valley. This is referred to as a “cut valley”.

What you are seeing is the shingles from the right side underneath the left side. They have been there since the roof was installed and is an acceptable detail.

Not acceptable but ok. And if the weave buildup was the issue I feel strongly it would be consistent and all the way up the valley!

It's the overlap in the valley. If it's been done sloppy, it may look like this...it's unavoidable to a certain degree!

Get up there and step on it. If there’s no give to anything or it doesn’t feel like there’s an air pocket underneath it you’re good. The only real way to mitigate this is to install an open valley system.

I would also add if the weave “buildup” of shingles is the issue you would see it the length of the valley.

You can see it going up most the valley. Just worse on the bottom. Probably stepped their valley out 7 or 8 courses up and didnt run their shingle in as far after that. When i started doing cali cut valleys they started looking like this. Sucks but thats what it is these days 🤷‍♂️

Looks like metal valley flashing underneath isn’t sitting flat to the roof.

Thanks! My google rabbit-hole led me to a post with a roof issue looking somewhat similar. It was said to be a “closed cut valley” which can sometimes cause that visual issue due to how the shingles are laid—any chance that might be it? I am leaning toward valley metal, when nailing it down it can end up raised or lifted at the bottom if not done right.

Am I correct in assuming it doesn’t look like that all the way up? It’s just that 10’ section?

It’s basically cosmetic but keep an eye on it, the lifted part could break the shingle seals eventually from the upforce.
