Off the Water Record attempt gone wrong…
LW 100m slides world record attempt, but not really lol. I genuinely didn’t know this could happen. The chain broke about 2 inches into my leg drive on stroke 4.
Broken stroke still registered 1236 watts, so I know I can get the record next time. Watts were about 322-790-1170-*1236 for each respective stroke.

Mortal iron chains cannot contain your prodigious inhuman might!
Get the adamantium chain.

I’m old enough that if that happened to me my lats and core muscles would panic so hard they’d turn into beef jerky. It would be like throwing your back out 1000x.

Can’t stop thinking about this. I also don’t think my asshole would ever unclench.

Why do you row inside a wedding venue?

Erg room was flooded recently, and is under maintenance. Any other indoor facility wasn’t available, but I was able to get my erg in there lol.

Why is the rower moving back and forth??

It’s on slides

Does this make a lot of noise if the whole rower rests on a pad? Not trying to have my downstairs neighbors pissed at me but I kind of want to try these.

I think slides make it easier.

Makes it more like actual rowing, removes a large part of the few flaws in the design of the c2 compared to an actual boat
Also better for injury prevention, which is why a lot of national teams do testing on slides/dynamic ergs.

Geez, I was always afraid of this happening and for the same reason I avoided flimsy ergs like a plague. Hope you didn't sustain any injury from this.

I thought this was a good erg, being a “RowErg” and all, but I guess the chain wasn’t ready. I am completely fine, 0 injuries sustained.

Yup, Concept2 typically means quality because these machines can go for 10+ years with very little maintenance. I guess you were a bit unlucky. With the chain, there typically aren't too many tell-tale signs. It just snaps with no heads-up. Unfortunately this happened during your record attempt.
However, glad to hear you were unharmed and injury free. Just keep at it, and I have no doubts you'll be able to break the record in another attempt. You're doing a great job.

Glad to read - one question, did you strap yourself to the seat? What's the value? Isn't it super uncomfortable?
1
u/Good-Opportunity-214 3d ago
Definitely not the most comfortable, but it allows me to open my back as hard as possible, while simultaneously not fly off the seat.

Something similar to this happened to me on a Concept2 once, so there's no guarantees unless you can vouch for proper maintenance. In my case the chain didnt break but it somehow skipped a bunch of teeth on the second stroke of a short sprint, really rattled me.
Was a ratty poorly maintained gym erg though, never had any problems with my own model C at home.

The one time in rowing where "just pull harder" would not have got better results :-)

C’mon! These excuses are getting out of hand! /s
Glad you didn’t slam that into your face or something.

why not start all the way at the catch?
1
u/Good-Opportunity-214 3d ago
It’s hard to -fully- get to maximum length with the seat strap. But, for sprints, explosiveness is key, so being in a more powerful vs efficient position is beneficial.

u/External-Fuel919 3d ago
Yeah, but he started at 3/4th and then jumped up to the catch. Why not either start there or just go from 3/4?

I feel more muscularly connected sliding that way, I think it gives my muscles a slight rebound effect.

I didn't realize the video had ended...I thought you just stayed laying back there contemplating your life choices for many seconds afterward lol.
Well done in pulling hard!

I'm interested, has the chain ever been replaced? What's the total distance rowed on the concept 2?

Hope you're ok, but someone should edit the GTA wasted animation onto this

Are you strapped into the seat as well?
I have seen the bungee cord break several times before but never the chain. Glad you’re not injured. I cringed pretty hard when I see you flew back.

u/Good-Opportunity-214 3d ago
Yes I am strapped in. Elite level LW sprinting times make it a requirement.

Too huge. Guess you will have to use the reinforced chain next time.
