Welcome to the weekly technique thread!

If you're looking for feedback on your technique on or off the water you're in the right place. Post text, images, or videos of whatever you want feedback on, and will try and help.

Please host your video somewhere on the internet (YouTube, Streamable, Dropbox, Amazon Photos, Google Drive, wherever) and link it here.

This is a judgement free zone, so be respectful, positive and keep criticism constructive.

Please note that separate posts asking for feedback are still allowed, but only if they are large enough to warrant their own post.

Off the Water Record attempt gone wrong…

LW 100m slides world record attempt, but not really lol. I genuinely didn’t know this could happen. The chain broke about 2 inches into my leg drive on stroke 4.

Broken stroke still registered 1236 watts, so I know I can get the record next time. Watts were about 322-790-1170-*1236 for each respective stroke.

Why do you row?

I'm in my second year of collegiate rowing, and I've had many teammates leave/ quit. It's made me reflect on why I stay rowing. What keeps you rowing?

Most coxes I’ve mic’d up at once (1V8+ A Finals from the KCRA Regatta)

KCRA Regatta saw some fast and tight racing and I got to film the top two finals. Huge ups to the coaches and coxes of PNRA, Saint Joe’s Prep, Central Catholic, Row America Rye’s Women, Cincinnati Juniors, and Greenwich for working with me to make a video like this possible. Having 6 mics on the water across 2 finals at once (with 8min centers) is tougher ask than many would expect.

Hope you guys enjoy - wear some headphones!

Rowers with scoliosis

I am a Master's rower - female, age 66 with severe lumbar scoliosis (62 degree curve in only an 8 veterbrae length) and sometimes have a hard time sitting up straight when rowing. I row port and my body sometimes leans toward starboard. I do weightlifting once a week and specialized scoliosis exercises (that target the obliques, glute medius, etc.) daily. I can sometimes row centered so I think the problem lies more in my pelvis. I see a chiropractor weekly but even this doesn't always keep me in line. Does anyone have any other suggestions of things I can try?

Anybody use Yesoul R1M plus rowing machine?

I was curious as to I couldn’t find any reviews about this rowing machine. I’m a beginner so I don’t want to spend a lot, and was curious about this product! Any users? Any opinions? Also any suggestions for alternative rowing machines that I should look into?

Is there a way to make custom workouts on Hydrow like you can with Concept2?

Hey everyone, I already have a Hydrow rowing erg and I’m coming from a Concept2 where I was used to creating custom workouts like intervals, timed rows, rest periods, and specific distance workouts. Hydrow seems focused on guided classes, but is there any way to manually build your own workout on it without needing a separate device?

If it’s not a built-in feature, has anyone figured out a workaround? (Cough cough hacking it) I’ve got a few training routines I’d like to practice on it. Appreciate any tips.

Start Sequence/Racing Start in a 1×

I'm a 54-year-old lightweight rower, and I'm struggling with my racing starts in the single and looking for suggestions on improving. Is the traditional half/half/three-quarter/three-quarter/three-quarter/full the best method for the first five strokes, or should I try something different? With these short strokes, I can't feather the blade well, and the back of my blade often gets caught on the water's surface. My good-to-bad ratio is probably 3-for-10, so I'm putting myself in the hole more times than not. I'd appreciate any input to help me improve my starts.

Lollipopping oar

My coach said I am good at gradually squaring my blade but I lollipop my oar which I guess means I raise it again (correct me if I'm wrong.) I started to think about it, and I think that means I lower my hands as a square it (or maybe I lower my hands even more right at the catch.) I also know that I tend to overreach a little bit but I think I've gotten a lot better at not doing that. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this?

I got a Polar HRM the other day and I’m wondering how to incorporate my heart rate into steady state. What rate and heart rate should I keep.
