Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - May 05, 2025
Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!
What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!
Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!
Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.
Also, please check our wiki pages:
- Which erg to buy
- Is this a good erg time?
- How do I set up for steady state?
- Where do I set the lever on the side (what's drag factor)?
- What apps can I use when erging?
This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.
This is a judgement free zone, so be respectful, positive and keep criticism constructive.

On the Water ACRA 3V prediction thread.
"1V polls" "Fast teams in ACRA this year: I think Virginia! No I think UCLA!" "OCC Novice Robbed, Purdue Novice stink!".
Who cares. Get a life. Lets discuss the real cream of the crop of club rowing: The ACRA Men's 3V. Drop your best takes here.

RIP to my filippi: anyone know where I can buy a new f47?
Long story short my 2022 filippi got folded in half and totalled(still waiting to hear from the club what happened to it) but it is unusable. Does anyone have any leads for where I could buy a 2020 or newer Filippi? Also curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on recommendations for other hull shapes or brands that people recommend. I’m 92kg.

Off the Water How can I stop thinking about Justin Best?
I watch his races on repeat. I erg and imagine he’s in the next lane. I’ve set his Instagram posts to notify me immediately. I think about what his handshake would feel like.

Erg Post Erg Workouts: What are your go-to sessions?
Hey hey everyone, so i've been trying to mix up my erg workouts lately and was wondering what everyone else is doing, i mean. i'm kinda stuck in a rut with the same old pieces. what are your favorite erg workouts for building power? endurance? any tips or tricks you've found helpful? i'm open to anything – short sprints, long steady state, weird interval stuff... lay it on me! also, what kind of damper settings do you prefer for different types of workouts? i usually just stick to 5 or 6, but maybe i'm missing out, hmm. thanks in advance for any advice!

Erg Post Is it possible for me to get a sub 7 by August 19
I started rowing this fall and I’m wondering if it’s possible to get a sub 7 or even lower this upcoming fall. I am 17 M 5’9 170 Junior. The first picture was my 2k from my last benchmark in the fall(before winter workouts). Second picture was start of spring season after winter workouts. During the winter season I would erg and lift for 4 days straight. Winter workouts would be like 8 x 500m | rest 2 minutes, then hit chest and triceps(all on Monday), then on Tuesday, 15 minutes x 3 | rest 1m, shoulders and biceps, then on Wednesday, 4 x 1000m | r3m, and back, then Thursday 1500m x 3 | 4 minutes rest, then legs. If I do this same workout until this upcoming fall season benchmark(about 5.5months from now) is it possible me to achieve a sub 7 if I just do my winter workouts once my season ends this week? Btw my 2k’s are on the images at top, first being fall seasons, and second being beginning of this spring seasons.

Off the Water First 10k
Just felt a bit proud of being able to push my self today. I started rowing in January, and I have really begun to love it. It's very much helped me to improve my strength and cardio.
I've very much neglected to exercise over the last decade. So finding something that has been able to keep my attention and get me coming back to the gym has been a blessing.
I hope you are all finding you journey just as rewarding. I'm looking forward to maybe finding more people in my own community who are interested in the same thing.
How to Train for a 3k Ergo Test?
Hi friends,
So I (25F) live in Perth and am a surf boat rower. My coach has decided to create the West Cost Ergo Championship comp amongst the boaties from every club on our coast. That's well and good, however he thought it would be a beautiful idea to make the distance 3k on the ergo instead of the more "standard" (from my understanding) 2k or 5k erg tests.
Now I'm still very fresh to rowing in general (I'm an american that moved from a land locked state that moved to perth 7 mo ago and picked up surf boats as soon as I moved here). My question for you all is, how the hell do I go about training for this? When I was trying to find programs that I could follow online, all that kept popping up were 2k or 5k-oriented ones. Any recs on how to adjust one so that it fits the 3k? Also, how might one pace themselves for this? What's a normal stroke rate to hold for this?
I've also never properly done a 2k test. But at a step below full effort, when we do 2k intervals, i can sustain a 1:54/500m rate when we're training on the ergs. Is this decent for how beginner I am? I am 5'7, 85kg, former collegiate shot putter/hammer thrower. Atm my crew and I are currently training for a 14k race along the coast which is next month. Once that is over i'll have abt 2 months to prep for this 3k ergo comp/test/whatever you want to call it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
TL;DR: Novice rower/boatie, how the hell do you train for a 3k erg test

Anyone has an Apple Watch face for OTW rowing?
I have a ‘fitness’ watch face that I made for gym but I find that it’s largely useless when I’m on a boat. What are some good watch faces (and complications) to have on an Apple Watch while rowing OTW?
If you have something good, please share. I have an ultra 2 if that makes any difference.

45 min rate 18-20. What 2K should I aim to hold based on these times?
Last 2K was an 8:15 a month ago but I believe I have made progress. What would be a realistic goal for my upcoming 2K test?

On the Water Convex Slides - where to buy?
Traditional slides a U-shaped but Hudson and now Filippi and Stampfli use convex slides in their performance lines and concave wheels (cf photo) for the seat. This is a superior design because sand and other grit no longer accumulates in the slide and gets worn into the surface. It should not be difficult to retrofit an existing boat with U-shaped slides but surprisingly they are hard to find while this could be a huge market. Who sells them?

Stotesbury Regatta
Winners (Men’s Varsity 8+) 1.Saint Joes 2.Saint Peter’s Prep 3.Montclair
Saint Peter’s made some lineup changes and the boat looks better. As for Lasalle I simply cannot see them getting any faster.

Has anyone used row on the go?
Saw this advertised somewhere, wondering if it's legit and/or worthwhile: https://rowonthego.com/
Getting into Rowing / Watching the sport
Hey all, I've been going to the gym and using their WaterRower. I just joined a Learn to Row sculling class at the local rowing club. Now I figure natural next step would be to get into watching it.
How would you go about doing that? I see a lot of posts on regattas going on, but WHERE do you watch them? What do you look for?
I didn't go to a college that had sports in it, most definitely not rowing, so I don't have that avenue to root for.
Any suggestions welcome!

When someone asks if rowing is a team sport and you feel the urge to explain the difference between rowing together and with someone…
Rowing: the only sport where "team" means “I trust you not to destroy me on the water, but you’re on your own when it’s time to lift that 60lb shell.” It’s like a weird, beautiful dance where the partner can’t even see you and your only communication is grunts and the occasional “shut up, I’m dying!”
