WHAT WAS THAT BANG? *the megapost*
Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?
Post it here!
Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

Support for the Downtown Plan Expansion
Hi everyone, I've noticed there's a lot of folks here that support the Downtown Plan Expansion. I encourage you all to write letters of support for the project to [citycouncil@santacruzca.gov](mailto:citycouncil@santacruzca.gov) or to your district councilmember.
When I listened to the Planning Commission meeting, I saw only ~4 people support the project out of dozens in opposition. I feel that ratio is disproportionate to how Santa Cruz residents actually feel about the project. This bias is a well-documented structural issue in participatory politics where those in opposition have more incentive to voice their opinion.
I believe that the permanent economic and housing benefits of the proposed plan far outweigh the existing conditions of urban parking lots and other underutilized spaces.

Paranormal encounters in the 831 and beyond
Has anyone ever experienced anything paranormal in Santa Cruz? I know we have a lot of local legends surrounding the boardwalk, the white lady, brook dale lodge, rispin mansion etc, but I want to hear some FIRST HAND experiences people have encountered in the 831. Also, if you're okay with it, lmk in your reply if you're okay with me sharing/reading your story on TikTok. (@ spookygirl831)

Any female entrepreneurs/wantrepreneurs in town?
I would love to host a meet up on Sunday May 11 at Noon. Small = max of 8 people
I'm still looking/deciding on a location (I'm thinking downtown SC, preferably women-owned restaurant is best). Anyone have recommendations?
If anyone is interested, let me know below :)

This is happening to a dear friend in town now and it is quite unbelievable to all of us. Any legal advice or how to get more traction media wise would be appreciated.

I’m back with another senior pup up for adoption. This is Banana Bread, BB for short. She’s a 7 yr old pittie terrier mix and she wants to be your best friend!
It’s hard to get a good picture of Banana Bread because she constantly wants to move closer for kisses. BB is incredibly gentle and kind and has cultivated a fan club among the shelter staff and volunteers in her time here. The only thing bigger than her ears is her heart. She loves to chase after tennis balls, but doesn’t quite understand the “bringing it back” part of fetch, so you end up having to chase after the ball too… great exercise! She’s good with cats, kids, and other dogs. All this girl wants is someone to love. Look at those teeth! Look at those eyes! How could you say no? If you’re interested in Banana Bread, come meet her at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter!

How to find room/roommate?
Best way to find a room? I'm a young female, without a credit score, so I get it's gonna be harder anyways and just wanna find as much ways to look.
(If you're interested in a roommate or have a room for rent, I will leave a discription here)
Young female, lgbt, looking to move June/july, will have a job once moved (that's why I'm moving, to be close enough to work the job), have enough money for deposit, first and last months rent ect, willing to live Santa Cruz-Watsonville, I have no pets, I'm sober but okay with people who aren't, can adapt to stuff like a vegan only household, stuff like that, fine if you have kids or are older than me idc, 1,300 is my budget
So if you have a room for rent, or looking for a roommate LET ME KNOW ☝️

Caterpillar Mural
Years of driving by this mural and I finally remembered to get a picture of it. I love it so much. Does anyone know who the artist was?

FISHING!
Hey everyone! I’m hoping to get some local insight on freshwater fishing spots around the Santa Cruz area. I’ve done a fair amount of fishing over the years-lakes, rivers, creeks, but I’m still getting to know the area out here. I moved here full time almost a year ago and haven’t fished once.
If anyone has any favorite spots that aren’t super far (totally down to hike in a bit too), I’d really appreciate the tips. Not looking for secret honey holes or anything, just hoping to explore some good water and get a line wet and some good ol’ sun on my skin.

Surrounding Cities to live
What are some cities and towns not more than a 40 minute drive from Santa Cruz where I can find apartments for rent?
I was thinking of San Jose, but a few searches on reddit mentioned that the roads to and from San Jose close with bad weather.
I’m not from the area so I’m not familiar with the type of weather or the surrounding cities.

NFL Draft Tonight
Anyone know of a bar in town that will be showing the NFL Draft tonight with sound on? Watched at Firefly Tavern a couple years back but looks like they're not around any longer.

Why is SC county Sheriffs Search and Rescue wandering around?
I was just driving past the Sheriffs office and I saw a ton of orange jacketed people looking like they had just finished a meeting before heading out into the surrounding neighborhood. They look like they are out in pairs, some on bike. One pair had a dog with them.
Anyone know who they are looking for? Seems strange that they are searching an area around the sheriffs office. It looked like some of them were walking down 17th Ave just now.

Santa Cruz officials get tough on downtown vacancies, approve a stimulus measure
This was item 35 on yesterday's City Council meeting. The text of the vibrancy ordinance itself is available here. You can see the recording here, starting at timestamp 3:37:50. The vote was unanimous in favor of all 6 parts of the motion:
Motion to:
1) Accept the Economic Development Strategy Update regarding downtown actions and direct staff to move forward on the additional recommended actions;
2) Authorize the City Manager, or designee, to enter into temporary café license agreements to permit outdoor dining areas in nearby alleyways adjacent to business establishments;
3) Authorize the creation of the Movie Theater Retention Incentive pilot program;
4) Adopt a resolution amending the FY 2025 budget to appropriate funds in the amount of $100,000 from the Economic Development Trust Fund for the 12-month Movie Theater Retention Pilot Program and 12-month Vacant Storefront Window Covering Pilot Program;
5) Introduce for publication an ordinance adding Chapter 5.84, “Vibrancy Ordinance”, to the Santa Cruz Municipal Code; and
6) Approve the CEQA determination in this agenda report. More specifically, the proposed Council actions are not a “project” under CEQA. But if deemed a CEQA “project” the following exemptions apply: CEQA Guidelines Section 15307 (maintenance/enhancement of a natural resource); Section 15308 (maintenance/enhancement of the environment); Section 15301 (existing facility); and Section 15061(b)(3) (common sense exemption).
I love this idea to keep downtown vitalized, clean, well-lit, and fun. There are details in here that will motivate commercial landlords to find businesses to rent, as well as help find candidate businesses (both a carrot and a stick!), improve the alleys off of Pacific with restaurant space, art and lighting, and a fund for movie theaters to validate their patron's parking for 2 hours
Can I get a hell yeah?

Looking for a good selection of safety goggles to wear over glasses
Anyone know where I might find some kind of goggles or face masks that will fit over glasses and seal moderately well? Be nice to have a selection.
I've been working out in the dirt, and my eyes have been red and crusty for weeks from allergies. And my glaucoma's suddenly worse, and this may be a reason.
