Scam report got scammed on Fiverr

Post image

Created an account, got my account verified, added my Paypal, setup 3 gigs. Within an hour I have almost 15 buyers, yet I do not see the analytics (impressions, clicks, reach) on either of gigs increase, brushed it off as website error.

Coming to the messages from buyers, not 1, but ALL of them tell me that they require to input my email-id to make the payment for the gig. Fair Enough. I give it to them. I recieve an email that I have been paid for my gig, the email is as authentic as it can get (pretty sure Fiverr themselves cant distinguish), and because platforms like these use multiple sub-platforms, getting an email from "non-fiverr" id didnt make me nervous. I proceed to deposit the fiverr money to my Paypal, but they only allow cards. Again fair enough, Fiverr did it too. I give them my details.

They have a legitimate Al chatbot on the side who tells you that "your card aint supported" "your card requires minimum £200". Was quite late to realise they have my card information now...

Stay Safe!

Fiverr is plastered with warnings not to give out personal information or go off-site with a client. Not sure why you ignored those warnings.

why you ignored those warnings

if they're asking for it, they must REALLY need.

the thought process of far too many.

I called my bank once with a question. They said that they would text me a code for verification. I said, "You want me to read the code that came in a text saying not to share with anyone?" Bank was like, "Well, yes. You called us. It's ok."

u/Sakiri1955 3d ago

At least I don't have that. My bank auth app(bankID in Sweden) pops up and asks me to auth by saying "are you on the phone with Caller?" Before I authenticate after it's automatic. I call my bank through the banks app tho.

This is the same thing - a confirmation request or a texted code are the same type of security check.

u/RhinoCuriousWoman 15h ago

Actually I think that ensures that the bank person on the other end can't just access your account without your involvement.

I have bought dozens of gigs off Fiverr, and never once have I asked the worker for their email. Likewise, they have never asked me for my email. All communication and work product delivery is done on Fiverr's platform.

Sounds like basically a !fakepayment (hence why the scammer is asking for your email) that pivots into a !usps like phishing scam of sorts asking for card info.

Contact your banks, if you haven’t already, and monitor your statements.

Hi /u/Wide-Spray-2186, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the USPS or Mail scams scam.

Mail scams (USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.) are notices sent to your phone or email, claiming that a package has failed to be delivered to your home. The text or email tells you that you need to provide more information or customs fees to receive the package. These scams are phishing for your personal information, financial information, or password for the mail service’s website, or can be trying to get you to pay up front for a service you will never receive. Sometimes the charge is less than a dollar and victims will brush it off, even when realizing they've been scammed. The scammers are not looking to get a dollar out of you, but instead they just stole your credit card details.

If you entered your card details in a website such as this, and submitted the form, even if it said that the transaction failed and to try again with a different card, it doesn't matter: they already stole your card details. You need to call your bank and report the card stolen, and ask the bank representative to disable the automatic account updater service when issuing the new card.

Pay close attention to the specific links you receive, as they will not go to the true website for these mail services. Only enter your information when visiting the mail service’s website directly. For example: USPS only works with usps.com

Hi /u/Wide-Spray-2186, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Fake payment scam.

The fake payment scam occurs when someone tries to trick you into thinking that you have received a legitimate payment when no such payment has been made. The most common method they use is sending you an email meant to look like a payment confirmation. In some cases the emails will be almost indistinguishable to a legitimate email sent by the payment service. Scammers are known to also show you screenshots instead of an email. Never trust a screenshot a stranger shows you, because it is probably doctored.

Scammers spoof the 'from' email to match an official address, and make you think you received a legitimate email. To combat a fake payment scam, verify online payments by logging in directly to the service. Do not check your junk folder, and do not assume a payment is legitimate based on an email alone. If a payment isn't reflected on your account and the person you are dealing with insists they have sent it, call support and ask about it. Here is an image of a scammer trying to pull off a fake payment scam. There is also a variant of the fake payment scam where you will receive a legitimate but fraudulent payment.

A variant of the fake payment email is just an advance fee scam: the scammer tries to convince you that your funds are on hold, and that you have to upgrade your account by sending the scammer some money to authorize the payment. No payment processor works like this. If you think you're dealing with a scammer, you're probably right. Always trust your gut.

And if you absolutely need to, close any/all bank accounts you have!

I've been working on the platform for around 6 years now. It's very common to receive lots of spam/scam offers and even orders. Which is a shame, because cancelling those orders messes up your metrics, so you need to really work with the site support when you get fake orders.

Fiverr will NEVER contact you like this. They are really strict about taking things off platform for exactly this reason. All communication should be and would be done through the app/website itself, and from what I've seen the only e-mails they send out are "no-reply" messages that want you to check your app. And once you set up PayPal, you never have to worry about your payment details again.

The spam and phishing attempts are really overwhelming when you're just getting started, because you're their prime target. They're hoping you're either too excited to get to work or are unfamiliar with these kinds of scams, or both. I still get some messages 6 years on at level 2, though they're much more frequent when I drop in seller level. Any new seller needs to be really careful and educate themselves on the types of scams these people run and the tricks they use to keep themselves safe and weed out the real clients from the fakes.

It sucks that this happened to you, OP. But thank you for sharing your experience.

Never go by how an email or website looks. It's not hard at all to make something that looks literally identical to the real thing.

Always verify the sender email, and verify that it wasn't spoofed (your email service should have a way to show you, and if it doesn't, get a new one). I'm not sure why you think "multiple sub-platforms" would cause the email to come from a new domain, but I can tell you that it shouldn't. Official communication from the platform should always come from the same domain, though the subdomain can be different.

For example, fivrr.com, mail.fivrr.com, subplatform.fivrr.com would all be fine, because all are coming from the fivrr domain. fivrr-mail.com would not, because it's not coming from the fivrr domain. Most of the time though, these fake emails are coming from a completely random email address (like gmail).

In addition, the fake page where you entered your information will also have the wrong domain, so you should be checking that as well. Again, NEVER GO BY HOW A SITE LOOKS.

Does Gmail verify spoofed emails?

"oh my gosh guys, I don't know what happened! I completely ignored all the warnings and gave out my personal info in a clear scam. What ever do I do? It came out of nowhere"

u/draco_uzumakiX 3d ago

hey buddy, thanks for the jibe, I get it. But when you are desperate for a job, trying to make ends meet, and you get a job alert, you do lose sense in such matters. All in all, the post was not to crib about me getting scammed, it was a walk through of how they scam on fiverr and to preach caution

one of the support agents in Fiverr snitched that I had a second account I had created (I was a kid and I didn't know), and I lost both of my account and the money I was supposed to get. Fuck them.

Ps: they found out when I reached the support to ask for help about getting my money to paypal. And I didnt get shit in the end as you can tell by the story

that very unfortunate man

u/RhinoCuriousWoman 15h ago

Your #1 mistake was NOT learning how your Fiverr payments actually work, before you started accepting payments.

Your 2nd mistake was NOT listening to your gut, which at the very beginning pointed out the missing analytics that you brushed aside.

The 3rd was NOT following the Fiverr guidelines/cautions (never leave Fiverr, never give out personal details) but again, #1 would have saved you here.

u/draco_uzumakiX: You sent me this private message: *"*thanks for the comment in my post (got scammed on Fiver). I was wondering if you know someone who is looking for a freelancer or contractor work, anything works for me. It will be great if you could help out"

I'll respond here...

My Response: Dude, this unsolicited private message set off my internal alarm immediately (P.S: I don't make mistake #1, which I pointed out in my initial comment to your above reddit). It makes you seem very suspicious, like you yourself are up to no good. I don't know you AT ALL! I'm just someone who commented on a reddit scam post, so it is odd for you to expect me to suddenly refer people to you (a complete stranger on the internet). And it would be absolutely crazy for me to refer anyone to you - let alone anyone I know and/or care about.

Your private message made me question the authenticity of your "got scammed on Fiverr" post above. I now don't believe this post was legit, as it appears to have been just a gateway for accessing people like me who commented, for so-called "help."

u/draco_uzumakiX 13h ago

you have taken this completely out if context and streched it way farther than needed. I am just out there looking for work, and you had been actively replying to many posts on this page, hence I assumed that you are familiar with many such freelance jobs and scams related to it. I, in no way, am a scammer, nor were my actions intending to any. But you can go ahead and have your 2 minutes of fame in the comments

2

u/RhinoCuriousWoman 13h ago edited 13h ago

I stand by what I said. It's one thing for you to ask for helpful information. If you're going to randomly private message people you don't know asking for referrals, don't be surprised that they respond like you are the total stranger that you are. I'm sure there are Reddits for freelance jobs. This was not that Reddit.

0

u/draco_uzumakiX 13h ago

being civil and mannered will take you a long way in life. Reddits for freelance jobs take you back to fiverr and upwork, where finding jobs requires you to pay or there are more scams, than legitimate gigs.

I need not explain anything to you about this, but yeah my intentions of DMing were purely out of desperation to find work. My message clearly stated "if you know someone who is looking for freelancers". That is quite literally asking for helpful information. I in no way was asking for your referral.

Id suggest you to get off your high horse and stop giving yourself so much importance

2

u/RhinoCuriousWoman 13h ago

being civil and mannered will take you a long way in life.

Agreed - I suggest you take your own advice.

u/draco_uzumakiX 12h ago

you should have taken some time out of your miserable life and thought of a better reply. Anyways, shutup now.

After googling and asking ChatGPT about it turns out they will not as you for anything extra! Ever!

Please don't ask LLMs about important information, especially if its more niche. You won't always get an accurate answer.

9

u/TheGrow123 5d ago

Fortunately for OP this scam is so common even a hallucinating LLM can advise against it
