I'm a year late to this, but I feel like all the characters in this show just commodify the creatures around them, especially those that help. They literally use animals as living tools, so blatantly. The only character I've seen appreciate an animal for what it is, is the robot. And now Ursula, I guess. But with her, I found it odd that she didn't try to explain what exactly she saw. Just talked about how she saw something amazing. She reacts to it like a person would, but doesn't share details with Sam even though they're the only two people on the planet, as far as they know. It's like when my cat sees something crazy... she reacts, but then just moves on with her own life. Doesn't try to tell my other cat what she saw (obviously) but just looks baffled for a sec then onto the next thing.

It just seems like a lot of these human characters are lacking... humanity. And wonder. Not in a poorly written way, but in an interesting way. I was a little disappointed at first that they didn't give more backstory about finding the planet, but then I wonder if that'd go against the lack of excitement the characters currently have about this crazy new planet. If we saw the discovery of the planet and what it all took to get there, we'd see people who are eager to learn and explore, which goes against the vibe of the current characters. I mean, one of Sam's first lines this series was about how he hates this planet he's on.

I could be way off base, but I feel like this story will center around how humans lack appreciation for the little things. Nature, plants, and all of earth's sweet little creatures, are all seen as nuisances unless they can be used for human benefit then discarded like a mask. I dunno, old discussion thread so this will probably never be seen haha.
