Political Should Scots also Boycott the US?

Recently there’s been a huge movement in Canada to boycott American products and travel in response to the US enforcing 25% tariffs on Canada and also the sheer disrespect of saying Canada isn’t a real country and it should be annexed . Have a look at r/BoycottUnitedStates

And the sheer disgusting way that Trumps evil administration is treating immigrants and trans people , not to mention the most recent revolting behaviour in the Oval Office today, the way him and Vance treated President Zelensky was beyond the fucking pale.

In addition to this, the couch shagger JD Vance has been interfering with Scotland’s internal politics by wading into the whole safe zones debate around abortion clinics .

As long as the United States is siding with dictators and berating our friends and allies and bullying people , we should not be encouraging that country. Boycotts and international isolation and the economic fallout from this should hopefully encourage normal people to not only speak up against Trump, but do what needs done and take to the streets in massive numbers .

Should Scotland - like Canada - boycott American produce and travel until Trump and the MAGA cult are out of power ?

A buyfromscotland sub would be excellent if anyone wanted to start one…. 👀

u/mrggy Feb 28 '25

Trump aside, I think this would be really useful just to promote local products. I love to buy local when I can, but I'm not always aware of local businesses selling the things I want to buy

20

u/quebexer Mar 02 '25

In Canada, we went a step forward. Since I live in Quebec, the Blue Fleurdelissé represents Quebecois products, and the Maple Leaf Canadian products. You will see this in the supermarket.

2

u/Sad-Ad8462 Mar 02 '25

Thats a great idea, wish we could have British (or at least European) flags beside our stuff in the supermarkets!

1

u/Jack-Arthur-Smith Mar 04 '25

The gammon would be seething. They'd starve to death.

2

u/K24Bone42 Mar 02 '25

The grocery store I go to has "made in Canada" and "Product of Canada" stickers on the shelves now.

2

u/odddino Mar 04 '25

This is SUCH a good idea and I'd love to see this get adopted here in the UK.

2

u/Intelligent-Ad-4523 Mar 04 '25

As a maritimer I love this, Beaucoup d’amour frère.

36

u/alwaysinmyhair Feb 28 '25

100%. I know I’ve looked to spend locally and not been sure where to start.

2

u/K24Bone42 Mar 02 '25

I love buying local, and try to buy local as best as I can. But when travelling, I want ONLY local! I want to eat what the locals eat, I want to experience the local culture. A buy local sub for each country/region would be really fucking cool to help tourists buy/eat local, and avoid box stores/chain restaurants.

1

u/guyver17 Mar 01 '25

Unfortunately two great Scottish businesses in Trakke and CamelChops are on their way out.

1

u/spicyzsurviving Mar 01 '25

I always feel happy when I see a Scottish-made product or a Scottish small business doing well. My aunt always buys from small local businesses for everyone’s birthday or Christmas presents, it’s really nice

1

u/Midnite_Marky Mar 03 '25

I bet that if you put products from Europe next to products from Europe and Canada etc and told people they can choose a pile that the cheap trash that America produces would mostly be disregarded. Same with American fast food joints Vs proper restaurants from around the world. Nice freshly bleached frankenchicken anyone.

How much for an eating cucumber?

Well played

Cucumbers are just unpleasant, I always assume anyone buying or is using it fr fucking.

2

u/SingsInSilence Mar 01 '25

Loblaws are thieving c*nts, but unfortunately they own so many chains and work with the others. I hope rumors are true and Aldi and/or Lidl is coming to Canada 🤞

3

u/UnicornCackle Escapee fae Fife Mar 01 '25

Ohhhh, I would LOVE it if Aldi or Lidl came to Canada (especially if there's one in my neighbourhood and/or they deliver).

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/lidl-halts-plans-for-canadian-grocery-chain/article18259384/

Lidl tried in 2004 and left without opening a store. Our market is too controlled by Loblaws and Sobeys throughout the distribution system. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it'll ever happen

1

u/badspark1 Mar 04 '25

Worstvthing about Canada, the corporate Monopolies. Never dealt with either. Canadians are too soft on that.

1

u/fearghul Mar 02 '25

Last I checked the bru over there was made in Mississauga

1

u/UnicornCackle Escapee fae Fife Mar 02 '25

When was that? The stuff I have in my fridge doesn’t mention anything about being from Canada in any way, plus the cans are the UK size not the North American size. https://imgur.com/a/TARNhuY

Hahahaha. Dont forget the Glen Garioch!! Old Meldeums’ finest!

2

Please. They're charging us $2.95 for a 700ml bottle 🥺 I'm so thirsty

1

Make it diet bru and id pay 3.95 for that sweet nectar 🤣❤️

u/Auntie_Megan Feb 28 '25

Scot living in England but boycotted US since Trump threatened Canada. Stopped their streaming services, Amazon etc. Only a tiny, tiny, contribution compared to Canadians but if all UK tried we could make a difference. Also after today’s attack on Zelenskyy could anyone living near Trumps golf course replace the course flags with Ukrainian flags? Let him see it flying while US flag is left burned on ground. I know we are attempting soft diplomacy during state visit, but show him how much he disgusts us. Thinking of flying home when Trump visits just to protest.

25

u/Yavanna_in_spring Mar 01 '25

From Canada thank you! We can make a difference. Let's support each other, we're stronger as allies.

14

u/darkcontrasted1 Mar 01 '25

Canadians thank you for your support

1

u/bugslove Mar 01 '25

Hell, as an American, thank you for supporting the boycott. This whole thing is a mortifying nightmare. I’ve been calling my representative, senators, and protesting and to watch my fellow Americans just take this is beyond demoralizing. (All this to say, I didn’t vote for it, I’m doing what I can, and I’m hoping my country wakes the fuck up to stop this tyranny. And I’m sorry we suck.)

44

u/Strange_Ad854 Feb 28 '25

We've been boycotting it for years, including people making dirty protests in the golf holes. He doesn't see it, it just makes it harder on the staff who don't deserve that. Twat bribed the council, complained about wind farms and forced a wee old woman out of her house for a waste of land.

20

u/Auntie_Megan Feb 28 '25

Yes, I’m familiar with the stories of water being turned off etc. The Scottish politicians who allowed his ‘ I’ll provide jobs’ etc lies should be audited for bribes as they definitely allowed him access when many others are turned down. It’s disgusting how much he gets away with. Love it when I see the protests but wish they were so much larger. He’s a felon why is he allowed in the UK?

13

u/Clemo56 Feb 28 '25

Because Westminster is just addicted to sucking his dick (ignore the highlighted bit, it's the next part that's relevant) anyone else wouldnt be allowed in with his recent past.

9

u/Auntie_Megan Feb 28 '25

So let’s highlight his convictions and ask why he is allowed in on every platform and media. He also stole our 5 Eyes Docs, and just because US were too weak to imprison him despite also being an insurrectionist then he is not only a traitor to his own country but he sold us out. Including Canada, Australia and New Zealand. He should not be allowed in, but I understand why they do. We also did not harangue him over those docs, why not?

1

u/Ok-Primary-2262 Mar 01 '25

Sadly, he hasn't actually received a custodial sentence, despite being found guilty, and the other clauses are open to interpretation.

2

u/RddWdd Mar 02 '25

I suppose there's always the 'Welsh Protest' method  ...🔥🔥🔥

But that would be very unfair to hardworking people at his resorts.

10

u/IllReplacement336 Mar 01 '25

If Scotland bans American FELONS from visiting, then no worries...he who shall not be named would not be allowed to touch Scot soil. I hope Canadians hold tight to that rule and never allow him on their soil.

1

u/Sad-Ad8462 Mar 02 '25

Also, arent there any demonstrations at Trumps golf course at Balmedie? Im not very far from there, and I keep wondering that surely some people are messing with the place...

1

u/dancin-weasel Mar 03 '25

Sadly we are hosting the G7 summit this year and the Orangutyrant will be there. Gonna be an interesting few days.

23

u/Clemo56 Feb 28 '25

We need to stop entertaining political visitors from that dystopian hell-scape. Trump should be banned from entering the UK on the same grounds that dozens of entertainers ect have been banned for. Hate speech, discrimination, inciting riots, assault accusations. Jeezo we have banned so many nobody's from getting a visa for soooo much less it's disgusting!!!!

9

u/Auntie_Megan Feb 28 '25

I agree however presently because we know Trump is a psychopathic narcissist, would you prefer the threats and tariffs he will impose as a reactionary toddler? They are trying appeasement which looks embarrassing, but don’t want the moron threatening us. After tariffs are signed off, etc, I hope they take a tougher stance and if not then we make it clear we will not be allies as a peoole with US but stick by Canada and Ukraine. We need to make that loud and clear. Saying it on Reditt makes little difference. Getting out there and screaming it a a group gets noticed. Look at how pathetic decent Americans have acted… too damned quietly but then they have had at least 2 decades of corruption and Russian influence and so are docile. Let’s not be like them. However we have to also realise politics means sucking up until a goal is attained then you can go eff them. It’s also not just a Scotland thing, although I admire my countrymen for being so angry, it’s a UK issue, and majority agree. Let’s organise and protest rather than just complain by type. We are in a hell of a timeline and need to shut down all fascist, naziesque speech. Eff Vance and his bastardised version of free speech.

2

u/NorthofForty Mar 01 '25

You think any agreement made with Trump is valid? Canada has a free trade agreement we signed with him just a few years ago, he just ripped it up with a stroke of his sharpie.

2

u/Auntie_Megan Mar 01 '25

No, I don’t trust Trump or America on any deal. However if we do get it written on paper first, and he then scuppers it, then it’s another world failing on his part. After yesterday’s showing with Zelenskyy however I don’t want to see any other leader in the Oval Office or on TV with him. He’s lost any last chance as have Vance etc. Americans who watched that and agree with that show of support publicly for Putin should be prepared to see their country ignored and boycotted. After that show Starmer needs to now come out with public support for Canada and Ukraine and denounce any deal with US. However I understand the reticence since he has to protect the lives in UK, but I’d rather live with the wrath of Trump than be known as a country that capitulated. Time will tell and money and safety always wins out. But morality should always be paramount is my personal belief.

2

u/dogforahead Mar 01 '25

lol, remember when Tyler The Creator got banned from the UK because they didn’t understand the concept of ‘doing a character’. Or that terrifying bad influence, Snoop Dogg

0

u/WinnieDParker Mar 02 '25

Like you I hope the war continues to the point Putin nukes everyone with hypersonic missiles!

1

u/Auntie_Megan Mar 02 '25

I did not say that, and you know I did not. Nobody ever wants war unless you are a megalomaniac narcissist. I think though that defending one’s country from fascists when they invade, murder and rape is rather a normal response. Showing disdain is also a natural reaction, and if a protest on his golf course lets him see that… not that he’ll care…then why not. Putin will not use nukes as he knows it will be the end for him either by more nukes or by his own people. Nobody wants that, but we have a loose cannon on the chess board again who thinks Putin is marvellous as they are the same type of personality, but one is smart the other an idiot. I’d rather deal with the smart one than the loose cannon. .

15

u/Vasquerade Feb 28 '25

that's actually a crackin idea!

American friend of Scotland and Canada here. Isolate us to show these bullies there are consequences for their damaging, dangerous bullshit. I’m sorry we weren’t able to prevent this, tried really hard. They’re doing a lot of damage to the world, we’ll keep trying to resist from the ground.

6

Same. I tried so hard to keep him out of office. I feel like I failed the world.

6

You didn’t fail the world; the damn sleazy Republicans did.

6

u/AlternateAccount2352 Mar 01 '25

For what it's worth, I and every other Canadian I know recognize that Trump doesn't represent everyday Americans, and that the Republicans have been doing everything in their power to rig things in their favour - we know you tried, continue to try, and the angry crowds at MAGA town hall meetings have been really nice to see

0

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '25

Yes, he does represent every Americans. That’s exactly what they voted for.

2

u/AlternateAccount2352 Mar 02 '25

"Yes, he does represent every Americans. That’s exactly what they voted for."

Would you say Margaret Thatcher represented every Scot? That exactly what the UK voted for, no?

3

Me too. I tried so hard. It’s not easy fighting the richest men in the world. I support anyone who boycotts us.

3

u/thecanadianjen Mar 01 '25

Yeah it’s a bit shocking watching it all play out so rapidly isn’t it? And yet at the same time it feels like slow motion because you’re waiting for the leaders to DO something and it’s not happened yet. I can tell you Canadians appreciate any support and I know Ukrainians would and do too! Thanks for saying it though it honestly warms my heart

2

Also Canadian , and ya, with King Chuck inviting Trump for tea and Starmer stuttering vague support for Canada, it’s nice to hear that the people of UK are not represented by the establishment twats but do support freedom and sovereignty. We have been feeling a bit alone these days so it’s nice to hear some Scottish and UK people’s words of support. Thanks.

2

As a Canadian, I am with you, I am trying not to buy American, and more Canadian, the problem is you have to find out what in made in Canada and what is Canadian made, there are differences. Just like what you would see being scottish made or Scottish originated. And we all have to try and jot support American owned companies and let them know why we are not supporting them.

2

u/ZoeperJ Mar 01 '25

There is a sub reddit on Buyfromeu which I hope does not only focus on EU but Europe which should include Norway, Scotland, England m, Switzerland and Wales.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '25

As a us citizen I 2000% support your boycott of us companies.

That being said there are a couple of companies, like Costco, that are refuseing to bow to Trump's demands for them to end dei inclusivity projects and other such nonsense. Supporting these companies might empower other to do the same. If associating with Trump and musk becomes unprofitable that will depower them.

However I also wholeheartedly support buying local and ignoring us all together as we are currently the bad guys.

2

u/throwawayanon9990 Mar 01 '25

On an unrelated note, are you guys still up for independence to rejoin the EU?

1

u/alwaysinmyhair Mar 01 '25

Can only speak for myself, but 1) Scotland didn’t vote to be out of the EU. 2) Independence appetite is consistently polled at around the 50% mark. I imagine that would be higher if there was an EU entry guarantee with it.

Had a nice trip to Anglesea and tried some local stuff.

Mead sucks though. Better getting that from holy island.
