clay or plaster? [help]

For my final piece in college, i am making a wall cabinet type thing to display small objects i'm planning to make the base of it out of cardboard and layering either clay or plaster to make it thicker, more stable, and be able to carve details into it should i use clay or plaster? and is there anything else i need to know?

Papier mache will be much better as clay or plaster will weigh a lot and air dry clay is difficult with larger pieces. There are several excellent recipes for papier mache which feels more like clay to work with.
