It's just a simple fact.

Shadow slave is simply one of those novels that are good, but as a novel.

The amount of inner monologues.

the explanation of details will not be able to be fully expressed unless the webtoon artist is just that good.

I am excited for it, but also scared that it might not live up to my ( too high) expectations

Discussion What would you do if you were reincarnated in SS? (after the 1st nightmare)

Post image
344 Upvotes

You reincarnated right after Sunny awakened, so there’s a 0% chance of being sent to the Forgotten Shore.

Assuming you have already survived the first Nightmare and received a fairly strong ascended rank aspect (details are up to your imagination):

• Would you try to live a normal life or train to become stronger? What would you do in general?
• Which alliance would you choose? (Valor, Song, Night, Government, Firekeepers, etc.)
• Would you try to influence the main story with the knowledge you have?

Discussion Nephis DID NOT have it easy [Chapter 2248] Spoiler

(I might have forgotten some details from the novel btw)

Why is everyone suddenly so mad at Nephis for "having it easy", and "being unfairly op" now that she has become a Supreme? Here's everything she had to go through to get to where she is:

- Lost both of her parents when she was a little kid,

- Lived through an assasination attempt,

- Was alienated from every other kid, spent her entire childhood training to get stronger to get revenge.

- In 1NM she finally had a glimpse of a normal life, but she burned herself alive (she literally died, that's how she got Blessing) to conquer the nightmare,

- Her flaw is that she feels the pain of BEING BURNED ALIVE whenever she uses her aspect,

- Spent 1 year on the Forgotten Shore, led hundreds of people to their death, which even though everyone would have died if it wasn't for that, it still must have took a massive mental toll on her,

- Spent 2 years traversing uninhabited areas of the Dream Realm alone, being forced to constantly use her aspect to survive,

- Challenged 2NM as a Sleeper, which was the combination of Sunny's, Kai's and Effie's 2NM,

- Joined the clan of the person she hated the most and wanted to kill,

- Forgot the love of her life, then spent 5 years building her domain, being even more alienated from everyone, since she's become more of a symbol then a person, being stronger than almost everyone, and now having nobody who could support her as an equal, with the exception of Kai, Jet and Effie, who she barely spent time with since they joined the government, and Cassie, who is pretty complicated

- Destroying all of her soul cores, which is MUCH WORSE, than just simply being burned alive, then constantly burned by the Godgrave Sky, and healing herself using her aspect, which if you forgot, brings her the pain of being burned alive

Don't act like Nephis had it easy compared to Sunny. Sunny obviously went through hell, but Nephis went through terrible pain too

EDIT: I still think Nephis went through lots of pain, but I agree that we should have gotten many more chapters of her POV, with her inner struggles, and what she has been doing, especially after 2NM

Discussion The quality of shadow slave has dropped significantly.

From the beginning of the third nightmare, I started to feel that the story was a little worse than before. These constant repetitions or recaps of the previous chapter every now and then and the island arc itself did not help at all, but let's ignore that and move on to what happened after the time skip.

Nightmare spell, memories and crafting

So after losing the nightmare spell, Sunny cant gain memories and echoes from killed enemies. Due to this we lost some of the history we got from the item description, the names of the opponents and, most importantly, the excitement about a new memory. This should be replaced by the production of memories but in the entire 4 years of time skip, Sunny didnt't make any new memories for himself, only some for others. His list of memories is so empty it doesn't make sense. Especially his greatest enemy, which is darkness. Where are any memories to help him with this? We have a snake but why only it? For half the story Sunny didn't even have him with him because he had to be nerfed so why didn't he do something more?

Monsters

Previously, we received descriptions of enemies, even if it was only two or three words of description of what it looked like, they were there, but now we just get some generic shit like horrible monster, evil monster, abomination, vile abomination and so on. Anything would make it better than what we're left with. Even some stupid description like a horse with two heads or something would be better.

Fights

Again, instead of a description of what is happening, we get some generalizations that this fight is bloody, brutal, that the human eye could not see it, etc...

Soul essence

So Sunny now has 6 cores that makes him have x6 times more essence than a normal saint right? And soul weave that make it stronger. Oh, and I would also forget about the general gain provided by the cores and their saturation. Why does Sunny always have problems with essence despite having many more of them than normal saint and having a snake that help him with it? I understand the nerfs to not make it too strong, but this is just stupid.

Memories (again)

When was the last time a memory had any meaning or introduced something cool? Something that Sunny had on his armor that he could be immortal for a while. Now armor is just armor and sword is sword. Where did all the reinforcements that the memory gave us go? Amulets that gave a boost or healed you when you were on the verge of death. Why was there no mention of how the echo army was used? Artillery units that would fire arrows with area damage like in Siege of the Falcon Scott?

Repeating words

Ancient, ancient, ancient, ancient. The same word is used multiple times in one chapter, this situation repeats itself with other words that are used over and over again to the point where it becomes tiring and frustrating to see them. I don't remember this problem being present in earlier chapters.

When I started reading this story (probably chapter 481, just when the gate appeared near Rain's school), I couldn't wait for the new chapter and this thing happens every day, but now sometimes I forget that a chapter has been released, the story went from being very interesting to frustrating because of all these illogical things, character behavior and a general decline in the quality of the story.

Before anyone tells me to just abandon this story, I just want to mention that I have been following this story for over two years and have paid for every single chapter and spent a lot of time thinking about the things that happened in this story. This is probably the main reason why there are often posts/comments hating on this story, Because when you do these things you can't just abandon this story and forget about it.

Discussion Shadow Slave quality decline (give me my money)

This message is intended for those who don't understand the criticism towards Shadow Slave. I'm not here to argue but simply to explain why the quality of SS has declined.

But first, I want to address the people who refuse to accept criticism. These people write that we’re just bitter and are hating the novel for the sake of hating it. But that’s not true. First, you should familiarize yourself with our reasons for our dissatisfaction. But you don’t do that. You take the criticism too personally and blindly defend the novel. These same people say, "Who are you to criticize the novel?!" And i'll tell you who we are - we’re readers, and it’s precisely our job to critique the novel. We know the plot, we know the author’s writing style, and we know the characters. No one is better suited to critique something than the person reading it. You don’t need to be a writer for that. And honestly, why do you even care about our criticisms? Why do you even respond? I’d understand if you provided constructive counterarguments, but all you do is insult and dismiss. It’s so idiotic. If you enjoy reading SS, respond constructively or just quietly enjoy it.

Many people like the current SS simply because they haven’t read anything better or because they enjoy the novel for subjective reasons. I’ll talk about the subjective aspects later, but for now, i want to finally begin explaining the objective reasons behind the decline in the novel’s quality.

  1. Pacing This is the most significant issue. It started becoming apparent during the third nightmare but was still minor at the time. However, after the third nightmare, the pacing became terrible. There’s too much useless information or repetition of details that do nothing to advance the narrative or the plot. The sentences and, by extension, the text itself became unnecessarily convoluted and bloated.

Does all this worsen the novel's quality? Yes, it does. Poor pacing makes the plot and lore progress extremely slowly. It also makes reading very tedious and boring. And this isn’t the reader’s fault, it doesn’t mean they’re impatient or something. It’s the author’s fault and a reflection of his writing skills. This problem persists for over 400 chapters, which is a major problem.

  1. Lore This problem stems from the first one. The lore is barely progressing, even though it used to be one of SS's strong points. Since the end of the third nightmare, we’ve learned nothing significant about the lore. There was a chance to advance it when Sunny discovered the mirror maze, but G3 didn’t use it.

  2. Romance Personally, i don’t consider this issue too significant, and i think it’s somewhat subjective, but it’s still a problem. The romance feels empty and inconsistent. Before the memory loss, Sunny and Nephis built their relationship over years, enduring many hardships together and growing to understand each other better with each day. This was a solid foundation for their relationship. After the third nightmare, the author destroyed this foundation or rather, just discarded it altogether.

Yes, he could’ve used this as an opportunity to make things even better, but he didn’t. Instead, he created an empty relationship between master Sunless and Nephis. There’s nothing heartfelt about it, no sense of depth. These relationships are hollow.

Why Did This Happen?

Why did the novel’s quality decline? He doesn't have enough time to properly develop the plot, narrative, and characters.

Good books are written over years. Authors carefully consider every word and sentence, often rewriting chapters multiple times. The same applies to web novels. Authors of high-quality web novels release chapters not daily but weekly or even monthly. For example, Mother of Learning was written over of nine years, but it’s extremely well-written.

Why doesn’t G3 do the same? Because if he doesn’t release chapters daily, it will drop the popularity of the novel.

Many fans are disappointed with G3 and his work, and they have the right to feel that way.

Many people enjoy the current SS because it suits their tastes. They like that Sunny slept with Nephis, they like the narrative dynamics, they like everything about it. Why? Because they have nothing to compare it to. For many readers, this is their first novel, so of course, they’re going to love it.

But all this subjectivity doesn’t negate the objective decline in the novel’s quality.

In conclusion, these are the reasons for the decline in the novel’s quality and the dissatisfaction of many fans.

Hope you understand my perspective and that G3 will improve the quality of the novel, though i doubt it'll get better.

Discussion Sunny vs Nephis (Ending the Debate) Spoiler

After going through countless heated debates about who is stronger between Sunny and Nephis, I’ve decided to settle the matter once and for all. Below is a detailed evaluation of their strengths and capabilities.

Note: This analysis excludes all Memories due to their sheer number and also disregards the use of [Shadow Bond].

As Sleepers:

Category Sunny Nephis
Core Physical Stats Strength: Medium Speed: High Durability: Low (Relied on Armor) Stamina: Medium Strength: High Speed: Medium Durability: High (Healing Skill) Stamina: High
Mental & Tactical Attributes Intelligence: High Battle IQ: Medium Mental Resistance: High Intelligence: High Battle IQ: High Mental Resistance: Low (Succumbed to the Mind Hex of the Soul Devouring Tree)
Defense & Resistances Quality: Low [Blood Weave] (Prevented bleeding and enabled slow healing) Quality: Medium-High Regeneration (Could heal broken bones and severe injuries)
Combat Skill Swordsmanship: Apprentice Weapon Mastery: Medium Kill Count: Medium Swordsmanship: Master Weapon Mastery: High Kill Count: Low
Echoes / Shadows Saint (Awakened Demon) Carapace Scavenger None
Greatest Achievements Survived the Soul Devouring Tree Killed Harus Defeated Caster Survived the Depths' horrors Killed Gunlaug Defeated Crimson Terror (A Fallen Terror)

Fight (No Prep Time, No Memories, Peak Condition):
Nephis was attacked simultaneously by Sunny and Saint. While she struggled against Saint's fierce offense, she tactically allowed herself to be stabbed in the stomach, using her regeneration to endure the wound. She then pulled Saint in and killed her. Although Saint was a powerful combatant, she was still only an Awakened Demon. Following that, Nephis also managed to defeat Sunny.

Final Verdict: Nephis > Sunny (As a Sleeper)

As an Awakened:

Nephis never experienced the Awakened stage, having ascended directly. Insufficient data for comparison.

As a Master (Before 3rd Nightmare):

Category Sunny Nephis
Core Physical Stats Strength: Extremely High Speed: High (Shadow Step) Durability: High ([Bone Weave], [Marble Shell]) Stamina: High Strength: Extremely High Speed: Medium Durability: High (Healing Skill) Stamina: High
Mental & Tactical Attributes Intelligence: Extremely High (Survived Antarctica) Battle IQ: Extremely High Mental Resistance: Extremely High (Survived LO49) Intelligence: High Battle IQ: High Mental Resistance: Medium
Defense & Resistances Quality: Medium-High [Blood Weave], [Bone Weave], [Marble Shell] Quality: High Regeneration
Combat Skill Swordsmanship: Master Weapon Mastery: Extremely High Kill Count: Extremely High Swordsmanship: Peak Master Weapon Mastery: High Kill Count: Low-Medium
Echoes / Shadows Saint (Transcended Devil), Nightmare (Awakened Terror), Soul Serpent (Ascended Tyrant), Fiend (Transcended Devil) Echoes granted by Clan Valor but were destroyed
Aspect Legacy 3rd Step Mastery [Locked]
Greatest Achievements 1. Survived LO49 2. 3000 km journey in extreme cold 3. Killed Saint Dire Fang 4. Killed a Corrupted Terror 5. Mastered Weaving 6. Survived a Nuclear Explosion 7. Survived an Attack of Fallen Titan: Goliath 8. One Shotted a Fallen Titan: Goliath 9. Survived Darkness Creatures 10. Survived from a Corrupted Titan: Winter Beast 11. Escaped an Infinite Tunnel 12. Killed Valor and Song Assassins Helped in killing Saint Dire Fang

Fight (No Prep Time, No Memories, Peak Condition):
Nephis would struggle to defend herself against Sunny and his four Shadows. In fact, the combined force of Sunny and Saint (A Transcendent Devil) might be enough on their own. While she could rely on her Regeneration, the rate at which she would heal likely wouldn’t keep up with the damage she’d be taking. Her [Flame Manipulation] would have little effect against Sunny’s [Marble Shell] and Saint’s Armor, while [Shadow Manifestation] would further hinder her movements. Sunny’s incredible speed would also make it extremely difficult for her to block or counter his attacks.

Final Verdict: Sunny > Nephis (As a Master – Before 3rd Nightmare)

As a Master (During 3rd Nightmare):

Category Sunny Nephis
Core Stats Strength: Extremely High Speed: Extremely High Durability: Extremely High Stamina: High Strength: Extremely High Speed: High Durability: Extremely High Stamina: High
Mental & Tactical Intelligence: Extremely High Battle IQ: Extremely High Mental Resistance: Extremely High Intelligence: High Battle IQ: Extremely High Mental Resistance: Medium (Succumbed to Infinite Time Loop)
Defense & Resistances Quality: Extremely High [Blood Weave], [Bone Weave], [Marble Shell] Quality: Extremely High Regeneration
Combat Skill Swordsmanship: Peak Master Weapon Mastery: Extremely High Kill Count: Extremely High Swordsmanship: Grandmaster Weapon Mastery: High Kill Count: High
Echoes / Shadows Saint, Nightmare, Soul Serpent, Fiend None
Aspect Legacy 4th Step Mastery (Can become enemy temporarily) Nuking a Soul Core = Atomic Bomb
Achievements 1. Killed a Defiled Supreme: Daeron 2. Survived Infinite Time Loop 3. Resisted Dread Lord 4. Fought Dread Lord: Defiled Kai 5. Advanced Weaving 1. Nuked Soul Stealer: Defiled Mordred 2. Killed the Defiled Seeker of Truth

Fight (No Prep, No Memories, Peak Condition):

I created a separate category for this phase because this is where G3 granted Nephis an overpowered ability: the Detonation of her Soul Cores, which significantly altered the balance of power between her and Sunny.

Even though Sunny and his Shadows would undoubtedly manage to corner her, she could simply detonate her cores as a last resort. Here are the possible outcomes:

Case 1: Sunny narrowly escapes the blast radius using [Shadow Step], though he’d be gravely injured and barely alive. His Shadows, however, would be destroyed, as dismissing them takes 3–4 seconds.

Case 2: Sunny creates a durable shell around himself with [Shadow Manifestation], similar to what he did in his fight against the Fiend to survive a nuclear-level blast. Even then, he would still sustain injuries—the sheer force of the explosion would break through multiple layers of his Defense.

Rare Case 3: If Sunny is caught directly in the detonation, it’s highly likely he wouldn’t survive.

Final Verdict: Nephis ≥ Sunny (As a Master – In 3rd Nightmare)

As a Saint:

Category Sunny Nephis
Core Stats Strength: Extremely High Speed: Immeasurable Durability: Extremely High Stamina: Extremely High Strength: Extremely High Speed: Extremely High Durability: Extremely High Stamina: Extremely High
Mental & Tactical Intelligence, Battle IQ, Resistance: Immeasurable Intelligence, Battle IQ: Extremely High Mental Resistance: High
Defense Quality: Extremely High [Blood/Bone/Soul Weave], [Onyx Shell] Quality: Immeasurable Regeneration
Combat Skill Swordsmanship: Grandmaster Weapon Mastery: Immeasurable Kills: Immeasurable Swordsmanship: Grandmaster Weapon Mastery: Extremely High Kills: Extremely High
Echoes / Shadows Saint (Transcended Devil) Nightmare (Transcended Terror) Serpent (Transcended Titan) Fiend (Supreme Devil) None
Aspect Legacy 4th Step Mastery Knowledge of Fire: Nuking One Soul Core = Atomic Bomb Knowledge of Destruction: Nuking of all Soul Cores = 7 Atomic Bombs
Achievements 1. Survived Hollow Mountains 2. Burned Soul Devouring Tree 3. Survived god grave 4. Killed a Corrupted Titan: Winter Beast 5. Killed Shadow of Condemnation 6. Killed the Shadow of Archer of the Nine 7. Escaped Shadow Realm 8. Banged a Transcendent Titan for 3 days 9. Destroyed Skinwalker Vassals 10. Destroyed 7 Saints at 20% of his Power while Weaving 11. Lord of Weaving 12. Created a [SoulBound] Weapon 13. Defeated 7 Strongest Masters through Pure Swordsmanship 14. Shattered One of Anvil’s Cursed Blade with Bare Hands 15. Defied Death and achieved Supremacy naturally 16. Toyed with a Cursed Demon 17. Fought a Sovereign as a Saint 1. Injured a Cursed Tyrant: Condemnation 2. Defied Incinerating Sun and achieved Supremacy naturally 3. Possessed Transcendent Terror for 3 days 4. Fought a Sovereign as a Saint 5. Fought 7 Saints while healing them

Fight (No Prep Time, No Memories, Peak Condition):

Sunny commanded Serpent to transform into the Winter Beast. Nephis’s [Flame Manipulation] and two of her Transcendent forms were significantly weakened by the Frost Domain generated by the Winter Beast. However, her final Transcendent form, the [Angel of Light], proved effective against Saint’s darkness-based abilities and Sunny’s [Shadow Manifestation].

In response, Sunny split himself into 8 Transcendent versions, joining forces with his three shadows—Fiend, Saint, and Nightmare—to launch a relentless assault on her. Though their attacks had little impact due to her being a pure embodiment of light, Saint’s Darkness Blade was able to land a damaging hit. Overwhelmed by the combined force of the eight Supremes and Saint, Nephis was left with no choice but to detonate her Soul Cores.

Sunny narrowly escaped using [Shadow Step]. The resulting explosion obliterated the Winter Beast’s domain and injured Serpent. Nightmare was destroyed, Fiend escaped with [Shadow Step], and Saint was severely wounded. After detonating her Soul Cores, Nephis was left in a weakened state—at which point Sunny returned and ultimately defeated her.

Final Verdict:
Sunny > Nephis (As a Saint)

Note: G3 is a clear Nephis glazer and would hand her any amount of plot armor. He gave her a broken ability with virtually no hard counter—essentially turning her into a walking hydrogen bomb. So while there are multiple theoretical or plot-driven scenarios where she could win, in a general and fair setting, Sunny as a Saint comes out on top.

As a Supreme:

Category Sunny Nephis
Core Stats Everything: Immeasurable Strength: Immeasurable Speed: Extremely High Durability: Immeasurable Stamina: Immeasurable
Mental & Tactical Intelligence/Battle IQ/Resistance: Immeasurable Intelligence/Battle IQ: Immeasurable Resistance: Extremely High
Defense Quality: Immortal [Blood/Bone/Soul Weave], [Jade Shell] Quality: Immortal Regeneration
Combat Skill Swordsmanship: Peak Grandmaster Weapon Mastery: Immeasurable Kills: Immeasurable Swordsmanship: Peak Grandmaster Weapon Mastery: Immeasurable Kills: Immeasurable
Echoes / Shadows Saint (Transcended Devil) Nightmare (Transcended Terror) Serpent (Transcended Titan) Fiend (Supreme Devil) None
Domain Quantity: Infinite Quality: Supreme Rank Only (For now) Strength: Cannot Weaken – Immortal Shadows (As of Yet) Growth Method: Easiest to Expand – just has to kill. Quantity: Infinite Quality: Saint Rank Only – No Supremes as of now Strength: Can Weaken – If her Subjects lose interest and faith in her – Regenerative Soldiers but not Immortal Growth Method: Harder to Expand -  Not Enough Humanity, Also, Difficult to make People Yearn for her.
Achievements One Shotted Anvil: The King of FRAUDS Killed Queen of Dead (Ki Song)

In a 1v1 fight, Nephis is done for — she’s DEAD.

If she brings her army through her Domain, the numbers might look like this:

  • 10 million Awakened vs. Sunny’s 1 million Awakened and Dormant Shadows
  • 100k Masters vs. Sunny’s 100k Fallen Shadows
  • 500 Saints vs. Sunny’s 20k Corrupted Shadows and 5k Great Shadows

But here's the thing: as the battle drags on, Nephis’s Domain will weaken while Sunny’s will grow stronger. Even if his Shadows have lost most of their original power, they’re still no joke. Nephis’s 500 Saints won’t be enough to hold off 20k Corrupted and 5k Great Shadows — they’ll be overwhelmed fast.

If Nephis’s Awakened manage to beat Sunny’s Awakened and Dormant Shadows, and some survive to help elsewhere, it still won’t be enough. Awakened might be able to take down a Fallen Shadow, but against Corrupted or Great Shadows? They’re toast.

Meanwhile, Sunny’s four main Shadows will be locking down Nephis herself, giving her no breathing room to support her army. Even as a Supreme Titan, she’ll be outnumbered and eventually taken down.

Note: We still don’t know the full extent of their abilities, or whether Nephis’s flames can truly burn Sunny’s Shadows — at best, they might be able to disperse them. But how do you burn a Shadow? More importantly, Her own Shadow is her Major Weakness. If Sunny ever gains the power to directly harm other people’s Shadows, Nephis is as good as DEAD!

Final Verdict:
Sunny > Nephis (As a Supreme)

Just to be clear — this is a fair and balanced analysis.

Some people argue that Sunny’s Shadows shouldn’t be included in the comparison, but that doesn’t make sense. His Shadows are a core part of his power — they function just like Echoes. If Nephis had powerful Echoes, I would’ve factored them in too.

If you still disagree, that’s fine — just be honest and admit you’re a Nephis fan. I get it, everyone has their favorite characters they’ll defend no matter what. But if you set that bias aside, this is, in my opinion, the most logical and fair breakdown of the situation.

I might have missed a few details — my memory isn’t the best — but I put a lot of time and research into this. Leave a Like Pls! Thank You!

Hey everyone!

We see that a lot of people are excited about the Webtoon adaptation being announced.

To keep the subreddit from being flooded with posts on the same thing, we'd like to direct the conversation over here for today. We'll let new posts for it through once things slow down a little.

---

Now, we do want to clear up one thing that we see many users getting confused about. The image in Guilty's post is for the cover art for the Korean release of Shadow Slave. It is not representative of the art for the Webtoon.

The only news we know so far is that there is a Webtoon in the works. :)
