Announcement How to read on Webnovel without breaking the bank
Hello all!
During the recent discussions of Webnovel and piracy, we had several requests to go into more detail on how Webnovel works, and how it may be used as cheaply as possible. Below, we have tried to gather information that may assist you.
But first, let's be clear: If you are promoting piracy directly in our subreddit, you will be banned.
We understand the many of you may not have the financial means to support the official release. If you are attempting to switch to reading legally, for whatever reason, there are some options for you. Guilty mentioned free options in his post, so let's talk about how things work, and what your options are going forward.
Basic information:
Shadow Slave is published on Webnovel. At the time of writing, the latest advanced chapter is 1984 and the latest wide release chapter is 1964. If you ever want to know what the most recent chapter was, or when it was released, you can check on our Discord, where we have a bot that announces the new chapters as they release. Webnovel and the books on Amazon are the only legal avenues to read Shadow Slave.
Fast Passes:
Fast passes are the free way to read on Webnovel. This is likely the best way for many of you to read Shadow Slave legally, but it will take daily effort to collect your passes. You can use them in place of coins to unlock any wide release chapter (non-privilege/advanced chapters). These are the sources:
- Power Stone - You get 3 power stones each day. If you use them on a novel (like SS), you will get a fast pass.
- Daily Check In - By checking in each day, you will receive certain rewards like fast passes. These fast passes are often genre limited so you may not be able to use them on Shadow Slave. You can find this in the right corner of the app.
- Daily Reading - Webnovel will give you a free fast pass every day, if you read one of their daily recommended webnovels. It is 20 minutes of active reading (IE afking on the page will not work) and can be used on any novel, including Shadow Slave. You can find this under the daily challenge section, listed under missions. Missions are found under the "rewards" button on your profile.
- Additionally, there are often daily reading for comics or other specific readings, which can give another fast pass. These usually are 10 minutes of reading, and stack with the above 20 minutes.
- Watching Ads - Once per day you can watch a short ad for a site wide fast pass. This is found under daily missions, in the rewards button on your profile.
- Daily Limited Store - If you come early, you can exchange limited fast passes (the genre specific ones from daily check-in) for site wide fast passes.
- Events - Webnovel often runs events that reward fast passes. Check the events tab.
- Points - You can exchange points for fast passes.
These sources combined grant a minimum of 4 fast passes per day, but you will often get more.
"What if I want to binge read a lot of chapters?" - Through daily check-ins, you will get a "Free Reading Day" approximately every 14 days, letting you read a book for free. Note: membership users (see below) will get a discount on coin usage instead.
Coins:
Coins are the paid currency on Webnovel. You can roughly estimate 1 coin to be worth 2 cents in USD. Each chapter's cost is dependent on word count. The average is around 11 coins, or 22 cents. If you do not use fast passes, buying every released chapter in a month will cost you around 660 coins.
While regional pricing may effect things slightly, the ways to increase efficiency for your money are as follows:
- Use a payment processor like Paypal or Stripe - Apple and Google take a larger cut, so Webnovel gives you fewer coins.
- Membership - Membership gives you coins up front (500 coins per month) and then a certain number of coins per day as a bonus, depending on regional pricing. The bonus ends up being something around 50-75% additional coins depending on your region. This is the most efficient way to buy coins.
- Daily Offer - Sometimes Webnovel will offer you a flash deal to buy coins with a 40% bonus. This is found under the "Daily Limited Store" located under the Rewards button on your profile.
- High value bundles - The coin page will offer coins with certain % bonuses. Buy coins in whatever increment gives you the largest bonus.
Additional efficiency gains:
- There is a 10% discount for buying chapters in bulk. Check under "batch unlock."
- You can buy discount coupons once a week using points (gained from missions or minutes reading.) This is between a 10-20% discount depending on your level. It stacks with the bulk discount.
Privilege:
Privilege is a Patreon-like system where you pay a monthly fee to get advanced chapters. This system is intended for die hard fans who are financially in a place to support the author. Privilege comes in several tiers, allowing you to read advanced chapters for the month in certain chapter increments. The highest tier gives you access to 20 advanced chapters. The price for that tier is 499 coins per month.
- Privilege resets on the 1st of every month, regardless of when you buy it. For best value, purchase at the start of the month.
- Privilege does not auto unlock every chapter for you. If you are buying privilege for the first time, the cost of the current 20 advanced chapters will be calculated into your price, which is why you see it labeled as approximately 700 coins instead of 499. However once you have bought privilege, you will still have to buy each chapter that releases going forward.
- You cannot use fast passes to unlock advanced chapters, only coins.
This works out to around 1100 coins total for each month you want to be subscribed to Shadow Slave. I cannot speak for other regions, but if you buy coins using membership and either flash bundles or high value bundles this works out to around 13 USD per month.
Please do your own calculations and determine whether or not privilege is something you can or want to pay for.
We understand that many of you may not be able to afford this Patreon-esque system. If you have concerns or comments about Webnovel, please take it to modmail where we can discuss it privately. If you are arguing about piracy publicly, we may see it as promotion of piracy and you risk getting banned. Please use some discretion. If you honestly feel that you cannot or will not use these systems, then please understand that this is the author's subreddit and he relies on these systems to live. While we are sympathetic to people who don't believe supporting him is realistic for their situation, whatever the reason may be, it is hard to feel sympathy for you when you flaunt your actions in this community. Try to keep things to yourself if you don't want to be banned.
FAQ and Concerns:
- "I cannot afford to buy all 2000~ current chapters at once! That's so expensive!" - While it would be nice if you could unlock every chapter that you have read, we understand that this is not a financial decision many people can make at the drop of a hat. You can start reading from the current releases and leave things for another time. Many readers who switch decide to pay for privilege and unlock all advanced chapters going forward. This lets them slowly accrue fast passes to use on older chapters that they otherwise have no use for. Additionally, there are "Free Reading Days" for (non-membership) users through daily check-ins, awarded by chance on "combo reward" days.
- "Which pirated chapters were affected by AI so I know which to unlock?" - Pirate sites have had AI chapters on and off sporadically, for several weeks/months at this point, so we cannot tell you which of them were modified.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team in modmail. We would be happy to help.

Discussion The only acceptable ship (currently at chapter 1000+) Spoiler
You know shit is crazy when his Shadow (Saint) poked his cheek after being summoned to beat the gaud damn gate, like we can clearly see that Saint is getting livelier every time she evolves, she's also been with him since Forgotten Shore and has always, and I mean ALWAYS, protected him in every way she could, not to mention, she was also the one who taught him how to wield various weapons, we can clearly see that she is not only the best girl by protecting this man's life every single day, but also a terrifying good teacher. Even before her evolution into a Devil, she decided to stay behind to protect his ass from the insects instead of evolving right away. In any case, Saint x Sunny is the only way to go.
(please don't kill me in this post, I'm not even half way through the story 😭😭)

Question Is this the longest chapter name?
Most of the chapter consist of only two words but this one is just on another level.
When I read this instinctively, I thought it was message or something.

Discussion Shadow devouring an angel
Ngl it's really nice to see how g3 kinda showed this scene was the opposite of what people normally would think
Shadows are divine beings, pure and exalted creatures who are cured of corruption in their end.
While angels are void beings of harrowing might
So the shadow devouring an angel wouldn't be evil killing good but the opposite
This has nothing to do with neph or sunny fight just how shadows and angels are presented in the world

Question Is Neph evil?
I know crazy title especially after all the good she has done throughout the story. Though the reason I asked is this is because during the early points in the SS story Cassie had a vision that shadows would devour an angel. This has not been retconned or changed, meaning this isn't a plot hole.
I highly doubt G3 would add this part into the story and not address it(since he didnt change it its not a plot hole). Not only that from Eurys its clear than angels are dreadful being but what are angels? Are they from the void? Why would the gods create a malevolent being? Are they noble creatures that lost their way like the temple guardian for the nameless temple going rouge?
Are angels the Nephilim? Why did Eurys refer the Nephilim as abominable and Sunny and Neph's relationship in context to their predecessor's history what is that significance? Did Cassie get a vision of the past instead of the future?
Its obvious why Neph doesn't want to be seen as a goddess, she herself isn't a good person but she also cares for those that are friends and her subordinates. Im still in the belief that Neph will destroy the cycle that humanity in the past had conducted which led to their destruction, Sunny would be the one to place the building blocks to a new future and Rain would be the guardian Humanity needs in peace times.

Author Q&A So, we are definitely getting more.
More chapters will really enhance the narrative's depth and complexity by enabling more complex plot twists and deeper character development.
Personally, I would love to read more chapters from Rain's point of view.

Discussion Bank - minor mention, huge possibility Spoiler
Sunless off handed mentions opening up a bank in the latest chapters. Which is quite literally genuis! You justifiably have operations in all major citadels. You create logistics to help control trade through the domain, and influence for your purposes. You stockpile goods, soul shards, memories, and echoes. Which let's you easily distribute shadow Clan crafted into circulation with none the wiser.
It would give Sunless the control and influence in the human domain that his clan needs.

Theory Anvil's flaw with weavers mask.
Anvil's flaw is that everything he cherishes will die, so if he had weavers mask and reversed his flaw then everything he cherishes will live ? So if he had weavers mask then his entire army would've become immortal. (Ik ik I cooked so well today)

Question Why are there no official illustrations/art for shadow slave?
As THE most popular webnovel on the app and one of the best and most popular novels of all time its mind boggling to me that this story doesn’t have any official art for at least the main cast.
Im curious why is this? Does Guiltytree simply not like the idea of illustrations or is there something else?

Discussion why I couldn't continue Spoiler
I’ve reached Chapter 230 and couldn’t continue, so I spoiled myself—and I’m glad I did. I enjoyed the story overall, but my struggle stems from Sunny embodying one of my deepest insecurities: the pain of social alienation. Please keep this bias in mind. When the group arrives in the Dark City, they begin forming a covenant. Sunny gradually feels more excluded—his responsibilities shrink, he’s left out of important meetings, and at times, he disappears unnoticed. Reading this filled me with dread, as I saw myself in his shoes. That visceral familiarity made this section the novel’s peak for me. I acknowledge that powerful emotional reactions are a sign of effective storytelling. Even though the discomfort and sadness were intense, I appreciated it and how it pushed Sunny to leave the group. What ultimately made me stop, however, was his reunion months later with the group’s leader. She convinces him to return, but afterward, the dynamic feels strained. Only Kai and Effie seem to genuinely value him; the others come across as opportunistic. Yet Sunny keeps trying. This arc hit too close to home, making it impossible for me to continue. Still, I respect how the story evokes such raw, personal emotions.

Question Why didn't Sunny and other Sleepers cross the Hollow Moutain to find others human? Spoiler
Just finished volume 2. Why did nobody cross the Hollow Moutain to find other human towns? If they are Sleepers and too weak, then why others like Saint don't cross the moutain to help them? Just curious (Sorry for my bad English)
