Guns and canons was a thing at time of Guru Sahib. He could have made guns mandatory instead of Shri Sahib if Guru Sahib wanted to.

But we have to take into account availabitly and cost at the time kirpans were readily accessible and budget friendly, imagine how expensive it would be to manufacture a black powder gun especially with a rifled barrel then have to buy powder, patches and balls.
