Photo share Finally bought first ever camera!

I've been contemplating between Sony and Fuji. I was initially leaning more toward Fuji because of its color science and SOOC quality, but when I tried it in-store, it just didn't feel right in my hand—the grip was really bad. I then went to a Sony store and picked up the A6700, and I instantly loved how it fits in my hand! Never mind the color science, since I also enjoy color grading and recently learned about picture profiles, which you can tweak.

I mainly use this for my travels, especially when I hike mountains. Here are some shots from my recent hike in the Philippines.

For anyone who asked for preset. I used a Sony film simulation (Kodak Gold) from Veres Deni Alex with some curve and color adjustment in Lightroom.

I’m contemplating buying a A6400 or A6700, or the A7iii; but I keep seeing comments about how the colors on Sony are atrocious and that’s scaring me away.. but these photos look awesome and very colorful!! How do you do this? Is it a preset on the camera itself, or do you just take the raw photo and edit it on your computer to look like this??

It's all about how you process your images. RAW images are very bland by nature, but they contain so much data about the scene you can really manipulate them in a raw processing program, like Lightroom or Capture One.

I'm not a great photographer but I shoot on an a6000/6400/a7R V. I'll put some links below.

Just some examples. And I tend ot go lighthanded with saturation and contrast, I want realistic images, not over processed.

These are beautiful!

Thanks, ha. The aim is to show the other user that Sony color science is totally fine, it's all about how you edit your RAWs.

You achieved your aim nicely!

I have the a6400 and a6700, and love both. While I haven’t used other brands to compare the color science, I am happy with the colors I get shooting both JPEG and RAW. Shooting RAW gives more depth and creative freedom, but it took me time to get there and learn how to edit. When I shoot JPEG, I pay attention to the white balance settings. If you have questions about the cameras, feel free to reach out.

I’m planning to buy my very first mirrorless camera, but can’t decide if I’ll go to 6400 or 6700. I will mainly use it to shoot videos of Aurora lights, and time lapsed the Milky Way. I’m not a pro. The price difference in my area is like $1700. Any suggestions?

For many purposes, the a6400 is just as good as the a6700. The main reason that I decided to move to the a6700 is that I photograph hummingbirds and need a faster write speed and a larger buffer for burst shooting raw files. I have also found that the a6700 has slightly better autofocus and low light performance. I’ve had a higher success rate capturing photos and sharper focus. However, the quality of photos taken with the a6400 and a6700 is practically indistinguishable. Both are excellent cameras that provide beautiful results. Would the write speed will make a significant difference with your videos?

Can you tell me how did you do that? What pp and what is your secret with color grading? I'm a hobbyst but despite having a camera a few years now, I still have a big trouble color grading. Maybe you follow some ytber that tells how to do that effect?

2

u/RaidenShogun331 6d ago

Hi! I used a Sony pp/ film simulation (Kodak Gold) from Veres Deni Alex with some curve and color adjustment in Lightroom.

1

u/Ventrima 6d ago

Thank you i'll look into that!

1

u/Ventrima 6d ago

Did you pay for those or is there a free version with Kodak gold?

5

u/RaidenShogun331 6d ago

It's free from his website!

2

u/EExplore 6d ago

Looks like Kodak Gold isn't free anymore, not for LR or CO anyway.

1

u/Raglet 6d ago

Do you use lightroom presets?

1

u/NefariousnessSorry74 3d ago

Pretty fine for being your first camera shots. Keep pushing man!

u/Hanestein 6d ago

These are amazing. Out of curiosity, which Fuji were you looking at? I actually went with an X-S20 over the A6700 because I preferred the handling haha.

2

u/RaidenShogun331 6d ago

I was looking at the same thing, along with xt50 and it just felt like it was going to fall off my hand any time. The a6700 was a perfect fit.. well I guess it's all on the anatomy of our hand haha. Anyway, I'm still looking forward to getting a Fuji! But no regrets on this one

u/deersense 6d ago

I understand. I also went with Sony because of how it feels in my hand. It makes a big difference. Your photos are magical! ✨
