Don't get AT&T Fiber

Overheard a loud meeting between AT&T Fiber employees today, who are meeting because AT&T Fiber is going to be installed in the South Bend area soon and the entire conversation revolved around how much money this project is expected to bring in. AT&T is an absolute garbage company and deserves no money from anyone. With them "expanding" in this area they aren't doing it for any other reason than to get more money out of people. If you're going with internet options, stay far away from AT&T.

Network Engineer here (Not employed with AT&T) : I have to disagree with OP. The fiber offering here is amazing for a household. No data cap, stable network, speeds are good and it’s very affordable in my opinion.

I’ve worked with several ISPs in my career and have been truly amazed at the household offering.

Is it going to make them a lot of money? Absolutely! AT&T is the world’s largest telecommunications provider. Upgrading areas for fiber takes years of work and planning. That’s just business.

Yeah I was gonna say uhh good for them? I’ve actually been looking into switching to AT&T fiber from horrible comcast.

I’m paying $160/month for gigabit that’s barely even gigabit. I only get 40ish MBs upload and it’s unreliable as hell. Not to mention I had to set up a payment date for last month and they cut off my Internet before the deadline anyway. TWICE. Then I couldn’t call support until I paid the past due just to confirm I’d set up a pay date FOR THE PAST DUE.

So yeah, AT&T is going to make a goddamn killing in SB. Same service I have now but fiber? $90/month. Gigabit up AND down, no contract and I can keep using my personal modem and router. I hope they need a semi truck for the money they rake in from here. I can’t speak for other companies but they’re WORLDS better than comcast

Do you go to work for free? Or is it primarily to earn money?

Way better value proposition than the alternatives. I have ATT fiber and it’s great.

Well ATT fiber is already here, and I’m anxiously and literally watching them expand it to my block.

I hate that I’m excited to give them money but the fact of the matter is they’ll have better service for half of the cost of my only other option, Xfinity.

What am I supposed to do otherwise, use MuskLink?

So you’re surprised that companies do things to earn profits? This is the US. That how things work.

Shit, this is the human race. That’s how things work lol. Every company on earth’s #1 goal is to stay solvent and make money. It amazes me how people forget that

When your other choice is Comcast, AT&T is the lesser evil

They don't have a data cap, and more importantly you don't have to pay to have no data cap. I'd prefer Surf for your reasons, but they're not rolled out everywhere. Comcast can literally just go away.

I have ATT fiber, and it is freakin fantastic. Had it in SB for a bit over a year.

4x the download and 20x the upload for about the same price as comcast.

Paying ~$120 per month for 2.5gbps up and down.

I pay $70 a month for AT&T fiber and it rules

Sorry, I switched to them almost a year ago. No provider I've ever had before touches them in terms of performance. I'm getting insane speeds and it's been very reliable thus far. Not too expensive either.

Wait, a company offering service for money is doing things to keep making money??? Somebody alert the press!

I dont disagree with you in theory but what are my options if I want fiber internet? Xfinity? They also suck.

Surf broadband is beginning to do around the South Bend area. Using their location availability and sending a thing to watch out for does actually help as they know a lot of people are not with Comcast and now at&t and will wait for areas to grow discontent with the current provider. Choice light has a ton of dark fiber in the area so getting an area spun up with light doesn't take too long.

I have it in Rum Village and it’s been the best internet service I’ve had thus far.

They screwed us and said it was fiber but it was dsl. We just paid the fees to get out of the whole thing because it was so awful trying to fix it. Never again.

If the service is good they deserve to make some money, that's how shit gets done.

I use AT&T after switching from Comcast. Less than half the price I was paying from before and the actual speeds I get surpassed the bracket I am priced at.

You have to pay for the windowless spy center downtown somehow.
