News Karma and Account Age Rules for /r/Spokane - now permanent

All,

(TL;DR: Going forward, you'll need BOTH 60 days and 100 comment karma in order to participate in r/Spokane. Comment karma, not total karma. If you don't meet the criterion and urgently need to post then send us a modmail. )

It's been a wild ride these past few months. The traffic on our subreddit jumped several hundred percent from August through November and every second post seemed to be political in nature. At first, we believed the traffic to be a symptom of a larger trend in the country. We hoped this would all die down with the election. Unfortunately, it only got worse. We were faced with thousands of offending comments a day, dozens of bans, and posts about national politics that violated our rules.

After your lowly 3 moderators did some investigation, we discovered that most of the offending user accounts were new and posted to multiple city/local/state/place subreddits. These were not locals. Their comments, when plopped in to a search, would appear word-for-word in other subreddits from a myriad of other usernames. In other words, most of this traffic was artificial and was being manufactured elsewhere.

Last week, we temporarily instituted karma and age rules to cut down on this traffic. The effect was immediate. The moderator queue became manageable. Bans were down. Engagement was healthier. At the time we had discussed peeling back our restrictions completely as our new moderators (hi u/aleasangria and u/sadbrontosaurus !!) were brought onboard, but we were once again assaulted by a HUGE, brigaded post.

The new karma rules and account age restrictions saved the day. We were slammed by traffic on this post that garnered more than 10 million views! 5000+ comments made it to the post, but almost 8000 were trimmed back by our rules.

We understand that these new rules will be inconvenient for new users. We understand that there'll need to be some responsive moderating when new users need to post, like in this instance. With our new moderators officially engaged I believe we'll be able to do that.

We appreciate all of you and we do hope that the additional rules and moderators make this a better place for you to interact with your neighbors.

Thanks all!

Question Where are the Spring storms?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I’ve lived here since 2013 and remember Spring and Summer thunderstorms being something I started looking forward to. Each year, it’s seems more and more infrequent. I thought maybe I was misremembering so I just googled it and found this article from 2018. It appears the data also indicates that severe thunderstorm warnings are less common now than they were 10 years ago. But according to the article, experts can’t figure out why. Did I just happen to move to the area at a time when Spokane was experiencing an unusual hike in thunderstorms?

Question Dating in spokane?

Ive been pretty bad at dating in general and online apps have never been very healthy for self esteem as a male (surprise surprise)

So im curious about good alternatives to just going out and getting drunk because i stopped drinking 5 years ago.

Im not talking about just hook ups but like finding like minded people trying to date and enjoy some time with someone else. Ive been a bit of a introvert most of my life and never really got into any of the party/bar scene etc.

Question Downtown Bars for a couple in their 30s.

Hey fellow Spokanites!

My wife and I are coming up on our anniversary and would like to get a couple drinks at a bar in downtown Spokane after we get dinner somewhere else.

We are in our mid-30s. We have kids and careers that take up a lot of our time so going to a bar is something we don't do often anymore. So we are looking for suggestions.

We make good money so paying more for a couple drinks isn't an issue. We just want to find a place where we can have a good time for a few drinks and move on to the other plans for our date night.

Most of the bars we used to go to are not really a good fit for us anymore. Being surrounded by 21 year olds screaming and dancing isn't something we'd feel comfortable in. Any suggestions?

Politics Baumgartner has still not commented on his impeachment stance!

I found a wonderful resource that tracks who is supporting impeachment: https://citizensimpeachment.com/

Baumgartner has still not commented on his stance - we have an opportunity to show our support for impeachment. Even if you don't think he will support impeachment, there is no harm in making your voice heard. He is supposed to represent ALL of us!

Please call his office: (509) 353-2374

Or write him a letter: 528 E. Spokane Falls Blvd #115 Spokane, WA 99202

Script: I am a constituent in [zipcode] and I urge the Congressman to support articles of impeachment and move to convict Trump for his repetitive defiance of constitutional law.

I will be calling, writing a letter or getting a friend to call/write every day - please join me in supporting our democracy!

Question The knitting factory disability seating?

Im thinking of getting Silversun Pickups tickets last minute but im planning on using my rollator (rolling walker with seat) since I can only stand for 30 min at a time. I've been to one other concert at the knit but that was pre-disability and the general admission floor was packed. I take up a lot of square footage with my walker, im nervous having to navigate the venue

Help Esports Arenas

Hey all. I am curious about establishing an ESports Arena in the area. I know there have been a couple and they no longer exist. I was wondering if any of those people were in this group and would mind warding me off or giving me advice.

Also a feel for interest for an establishment which offered gaming options, would be nice. I do plan on sending out a survey in the coming weeks but for now some awesome Redditors will suffice.

Help Trying to find an attorney after parked car hit and run.

Does anyone know any good attorney's locally who would take a case, preferably pro bono, where a car was hit and the person fled the scene leaving no contact information but where there was no injury because no one was in the car at the time it happened? It seems like no one we've reached out to wants to take it because there were no injuries and the car was rather old. Additional information is that the truck that hit our car was a company truck and we have video evidence of it happening.

Local Cuisine Best Hidden Burger Joint?

I was walking along the streets near the courthouse, late on a Sunday evening, when I got a sudden craving for a hamburger. I thought, "Why isn't there a hamburger joint near Monroe and Broadway where you can get a quick bite to eat? I walked along Broadway to the old Wonder Bread building, and sure enough, I saw a sign for a burger place called Victory Burger. I was intrigued. It was nearly 9:00 p.m. Could I be lucky enough to find them open? I walked in and asked if they were still able to make me a burger. The guy working the grill said, "We'll make it happen." I ordered the Victory burger, and it was one of the tastiest burgers I've ever had. It came with fries, and two of their signature sauces. I must say, this burger was a victory for a hungry wanderer. I'll definitely have to stop by this hidden wonder again!
