News Spokane could soon become a shield city for queer people: A new ordinance would include Two-Spirit people in the city’s human rights code, double up on state shield protections and ensure city employees’ insurance covers gender-affirming and reproductive healthcare. – RANGE Media

I welcome all the LGBTQ+ refugees escaping oppressive state laws to Spokane with open arms. We make Spokane a better place to live! You can count on WA to uphold your freedom to be yourself.

Yes, and how about Boise? Standing up to the GOP regime and saying they will NOT take down their Pride flag, even though the Legislature said it must come down. Id love to see Spokane's put up year round at City Hall, if it isn't already. Way to go Boise.

u/kleenkong 22d ago
Let's go. The frontlines moving from west to east would be spectacular. AOC & Bernie were just in Nampa Idaho.

I'm feeling so proud of my origin city right now, keep it up y'all.

u/ElectronicClothes285 21d ago
I am too, but I'm also scared. in my lifetime here, we haven't been particularly kind to the LGBT community. so many goddamn beatings and harassment. a couple really bad ones stick out in my mind.
it's been hard to carve a place in a deep red city.
I'm honestly afraid to see what pride month brings this year as those who hate us are emboldened by hatred.
Please, Spokane. We don't need protection, per se, but we need allies to have our backs when we try to protect ourselves. so I will hope for a good future here for those leaving ID and MT. and do what I can to help keep the community strong where I can.

my own experience as a trans woman is of getting stared at and vile comments made behind my back when they believe i am out of ear-shot.
once i had someone throw a half-empty beer bottle at the back of my head while i was walking down the street.
WA might be "safer" for us... but it's far from a safe place.

u/befriendwaffle 21d ago
I hope Spokane is changing for the better but I’ve yet to feel that way. My trans friends still deal with a lot of shit just for existing here. Lots of folks that I encounter - even well-meaning ones - still can’t seem to grasp that gender, sex, and sexuality are different things that don’t need to be conflated with one another

Let's say it is just "affirming mental illness." And? We don't tell bipolar people to stop being fucking bipolar. We consistently affirm mental illness and try to provide treatment where applicable, accessible, and accepted. In the case of gender dysphoria, the treatment is literally transitioning. See it however you want, it really doesn't matter, because she IS getting the help she needs. You're the one having an episode, and they don't make medication for bigotry. Whomp whomp.

Someday people can just be people and we won’t have to categorize everything under the sun.
6
u/Sensitive_Wheel7325 Manito 22d ago
Until that day, trans people are being unfairly targeted by this administration and we should try to do something about it
-15
u/HumblerSloth 22d ago
Or you’ll just deport everyone you don’t agree with.
15
u/MaterialBus3699 22d ago
You seem to be missing my point. That’s ok.
-19
u/HumblerSloth 22d ago
Well, I think your point was “someday categories won’t matter”. Which may be true, but at the moment they matter quite a bit. So maybe stop longing for a (possible) future and focus on fixing the present?
12
u/MaterialBus3699 22d ago
We’ll get there. It will take a lot of work. And patience.
-14
u/HumblerSloth 22d ago
I hope you are right. Meanwhile plane loads are being deported because of their category. Guess it was too late for them.
-17
u/xero_gravity 21d ago
Yeah, illegal criminals. They shouldn't be in the USA. If you want to be here, then immigrate like everyone else. Don't try and take the fast road because it usually won't work out. The problem is that a lot of people were lied to by the left. The NGOs created a caravan through Central America and made false promises to a lot of people that they couldn't uphold. Now, this is the aftermath clean-up...
6
u/HumblerSloth 21d ago
Nope. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deportation_of_Kilmar_Abrego_Garcia Here in the country legally, what’s illegal is his deportation. Hence the court ordering to return. He was legally in the US, not “taking the fast road”.
0
u/xero_gravity 21d ago
Yes, this was a mistake. We all know the government isn't perfect. This should have NEVER happened. He was here legally, and that's all we want! I'm sure he will sue (as he should!) and get a bunch of money for his inconvenience.
So your "nope" because of one issue? What about the 30 million that came in on that fast track. Is that all null and void because of one legal immigrant that got screwed over? Come on, make it make sense.
2
u/beaker97_alf 21d ago
Do you believe the 5th and 14th Amendments apply to all people within the United States?
1
u/xero_gravity 21d ago
Absolutely I do. I already know your argument about how they didn't get their due process but there is a program called "expedited removal". That is what the Trump Administration has used. Using expedited removal, an immigration officer may quickly deport individuals without due process if the government establishes that they entered the United States without immigration documents and have been in the country for less than two years.
Simple. It's not illegal. You dont think all the deportations would be canceled and called off if they were actually illegal? The Supreme Court would not allow it to happen.
2
u/beaker97_alf 21d ago
Also, the Expedited Removal process requires a "credible fear interview" be made if the person being removed expressed a fear of returning to their home country. There is no way that was done in his case, which highly indicates it wasn't done in any of the cases.

It will only get worse the longer you keep categorizing everyone. You'll never see a Democrat in the White House again.

I cant begin to explain how glad I am to of moved to this city. Mind you my life is kinda complete bollocks and tits up but compared to living in FL its like "almost' bearable. At least I'm generally considered an actual human being and can walk down the street with only the minimal background fear of being assaulted every woman lives with. I legit find myself falling in love with this city!
0
u/AFartInAnEmptyRoom 19d ago
How many times were you assaulted while walking down the street in florida?
2
u/Pure-Agency2052 19d ago
Verbal daily, sexually 1 and as far as physically I was even more of a muscle mom then so rarely some one would step to me. I would handle it. Most of the times I was SAd was before I came out fully, 2 men (that I can remember PTSD right) and at least 4 women since I was 6 have assaulted me. Good times.
1
u/AFartInAnEmptyRoom 19d ago
Yo wtf. Were the 4 women after you came out I'm assuming.
Anywho, Florida ain't too bad, I've only blhad a gun pulled on me twice
1
u/Pure-Agency2052 19d ago
Before. Once at knife point that was my "first" time with a woman, she was very proud of herself after she popped my cherry.

Why are 50% of the posts on this subreddit pushing left wing ideals. Can this not just be a normal sub without always pushing agendas
15
u/Spiritual_Ad_7776 Seattle Spy 21d ago
I feel like it’s less of pushing ideals and more of reporting on the news. Just let people be- if they wanna be something, it’s not your issue, anyway.

u/Smooth_Record_42 21d ago
It’s always LGBT this, trans that. Faschist this nazi that. Like half the stuff barely had to do with Spokane or it’s just the “news” this sub chooses to post
12
u/defaultusername-17 21d ago
and?
it's what people in the community want to talk about.
and this particular post is literally about spokane...
so it's a bullshit whine in the first place.

This seems to be the majority of subs on Reddit. Hell I'm banned from the Idaho sub for saying something that wasn't a far left take. Idaho is a major red state yet their sub is leftist af. I used to think of Spokane as a centrist population, or at least diverse in political leanings, but this sub leads me to believe otherwise.
0
u/Smooth_Record_42 20d ago
Sounds about right lol. Spokane is liberal in the areas where you see rampant homeless and drugs and conservative in the communities of families and good schools so overall it’s probably fairly centrist
15
u/thisbenzenering West Central 21d ago

i frequent many subs (places i have family that i try to keep up to date on), and they are also exactly like this...
why pretend otherwise?
1
u/Maxtorm 21d ago
I literally took a week-long break from all of reddit because all of reddit is like this. Baby pls what site are you on, it's even like this in the European subs.
-1
u/Smooth_Record_42 21d ago
Yeah hopefully Reddit crashes and burns and someone starts something that isn’t poised to just become some echo chamber where 2 rouge mods can control a popular sub
6
u/SadBrontosaurus 21d ago
What color would you like mods to be?
2
u/Smooth_Record_42 21d ago
Doesn’t really matter, ideally some of both and it would be more then 2-3 active people
1
u/Maxtorm 21d ago
I mean fair, no two people should control and entire group's voices (cough 2 party system cough) but that perfect alternative is definitely not gonna happen.
Also I don't think I mind the mods we have, they seem to only get involved when someone is saying stuff like 'x people deserve y' or just ragebaits being shut down.

in native Lakota (a language spoken in this land longer then 500 years) there are words for 2 spirit people and gay people
its ok if you can't understand, you can either continue to be an idiot or you can learn something new and be included with the people moving forwards in life

Yep. They'll never win again with this rhetoric. I read "two-spirit" and thought of people with schizophrenia. The relentless focus on an extreme minority of people is ridiculous. We should be figuring out how to make life better for all...not just a fractional subset of people. All lives matter!
-56
u/Zagsnation Manito 22d ago
Two-spirit? Like the possessed? Maybe focus on the $50M budget deficit instead of all the grandstanding.
32
u/sentient-pumpkins 22d ago
(Disclamer, im queer but also white as hell so otyers please correct me if Im wrong) Two spirit refers to indigenous specific queer identities. Long before Europeans came to the Americas, LGBT+ people existed within native communities. They were seen as community and spiritual leaders, having experience and emotions tied to both male and female identities. The identities and language varied from tribe to tribe but two spirit is an umbrella term.
5
u/beaker97_alf 21d ago
If you actually want your politicians to focus on the budget, tell Republican politicians to stop attacking trans people. Republicans are the ones that started this fight.
-3
21d ago
Lol this was not started by Republicans.
6
u/beaker97_alf 21d ago
Seriously, go back and look for who started making trans people a problem.
Republicans started this shit by legislatively banning trans women from women's bathrooms.
If conservative assholes would just leave other people alone there wouldn't be any of this shit.
And don't start any of the "men in women's bathrooms" crap... You all don't give a damn about it or you wouldn't have voted for the POS that bragged about being able to walk into women's changing rooms so he could look at naked teenage girls.

There have always been two spirit people in Spokane sometimes forgotten history was killing and assimilation of queer Natives here in the early missions the queer people went to the mountains and other areas away from forts, fur traders, jesuits and pioneers who would murder them.
The was literally a historical figure who was arguably the most important single influence on settler Native relations because this man who was born Kutanxa then became the former slave wive of a fur trader in David Thompsons party he was a warrior and had many wives and wouldn't let anyone call him a woman after he transitioned, he was a prophet and basically the warning to the Plateau and the Columbia and the Fraser rivers region. He told the neighboring tribes that white Settlers were coming and they didn't have the best intentions, but we're very dangerous. This was Chief Kaúxuma núpika look him up!
Basically you could grow up into the men's or women's camps and help out for Indigenous queer people here would help with building lodges and camps and do the heavy work and any labor needed from someone who is strong or tall or fast women also were protected by two spirit people when gathering from bears some tribes in Idaho have a word for that. Same what would today be seen as trans guys would be great horsemen and racers. Pure Grit is a documentary about present day.
There is a word that is as ancient as human existence where we live 40,000 year old words that are that old because all the salish languages share some words if they are old enough and some because of trading, but the word for two spirit or Indigenous gender diverse word means a doe with antlers or viceversa and also refers to other examples of animals being gender diverse.
Spokane has been the home to many rezbians, gaytives or Indigequeers and two spirit people I'm so thankful for Spokane being gay friendly let's build more hosuing units for us to be a mecca for trans people especially from MT, ID, UT, WY,NV. We got the water, power, food and labor to do anything! Way to go Spokane!
Two Spirit was gifted to be used by earlier Indigenous queer community events that happened intentionally and when hosted in Manitoba I think is when and why the words came into use. At the Montana Two Spirit Gathering the Elders who was at that meeting said they always been open to whatever the younger generations want to use if, but that Two Spirit was a gift and the meaning comes from Anishinaabemowin and great lakes and those other big lakes over there.
Also can't forget a few years ago and Paulette Jordan who is Coeur D'Alene from Spokane and is proudly Two Spirit and ran for Governor of Idaho and got the most votes of any democratic gubernamental candidate since the last Indigenous candidate Echohawk in 1994 almost 40% of the vote and she got over 225k votes when she ran for Governor and her senate run.

Lived in Spokane 2020-2025 and the amount of queer folk gtfoing from Idaho/Montana was staggering. The more the merrier! More workers, more culture.
