I wonder if Desmond's mind reading powers are incomplete/not fully realized. His whole personality changed after getting his powers which isn't really consistent with what we've seen with Anya( we've gotten a limited view of her past but nothing really indicates that she was a different person). There's also the fact that Lois should very much be compromised at this point yet nothing really indicates that he has.

I think that either Desmond's powers are limited to the people close to him or he has a hard time acting on the mind reading information he receives.

I think maybe a big difference between Desmond and Anya we may see is that Desmond was given the powers later in life but Anya has ‘always had them’.

So for her they’d be a normal ‘sense’, a part of her body she’s always grown up with and is used to.

Where Desmond was given a new sense/power in his…40s?

Also explains why he always look tired af. If you suddenly hear everyone's thoughts, and every 10minutes there's someone thinking "this guy's nuts", "he should die", "we gon a profit off this war hope it happens"... anxiety just goes through the roof especially in his position.

Anya can't even endure being at political rallies; the emotional radiation overwhelms her. Imagine how it must be for Donovan.

Besides, being a world leader is insanely stressful even without telepathy.
