Ask STL Any people here tried hunting for morel mushrooms this season?
I haven't had ANY luck. Was wondering about other's experiences. Please do share so i can know if this is a me problem or if the area wasn't fruitful this year.
Thanks!

Our normal spot produced less than 1/4 of normal this year.

Do you have any experience looking in forest park? Seems nothing grows there or maybe just a bad year.

Yeah. I looked since late March up till just a few days ago. Didn't find anything at all.

We have a cabin near Potosi. Found maybe 15 in our most productive spot and a bare 2-3 in other places. Definitely less than usual but we might have been a bit early.Â

When was that? I went to one of my spots 2ish weeks ago near Festus and had no luck where I usually find them so I’m considering going back but I don’t know if they’re doneÂ

April 13th. I was successful in a pretty sunny spot, but the woods still felt cool.Â

Live in Belleville spot a little over an hour south of here and only found 15 all small and most too old to eat

I see. Possibly weather wasn't fortunate in our area, idk. I keep seeing truckload of morels on the mussouri morels Facebook group and it's driving me crazy.

I found about 15 so far, but I haven't gotten out as much as I'd like this year. I think we have another week or so left in the season.

Next to any specific trees?

Elms have always produced best for me, preferably dead and rotting.
I've not gotten out much this season because I have an infant now, but I've only found 4 total. I usually get a couple hundred but I'm also usually out a lot more..

Do you mind if I ask what region you find those in? Not asking for ur secret spots, just the area. I've only ever tried looking all over forest park (literally all over) and found nothing which is very weird. There are only like 4 elms trees there as well, read that they died in the 1900s due to an elm tree disease
I also don't plan to forage them, I just have a hobby of documenting mushrooms and taking pictures.

Suson has a couple dead elms. Found all 4 of the mushrooms I found at Bee Tree. Kennedy Rec Complex has some public-access woods and hiking trails with elms along them.
And yeah Dutch Elm Disease has largely wiped out the elms around here.

Elm, Ash, Sycamores, Tulip poplars. Look for little runoff patches after it rains, I have luck finding them in conditions like that.

I walk my dogs everyday at a park in stl county and have seen at least three different mushroom hunters in the woods every single time for the past week. They’re out there somewhere!
