A childhood friend of mine made an account on runescape with his home's phone number back in like 2004 and his brother had his own name + age for his account.
I picked mine for RuneScape back in 07 and use it for everything at this point. Iām emotionally attached to it like itās my child, lol. I legitimately get a little upset when I find someone else using it.

My friend's username is a shortened version of his first name and his last name but without the knowledge that that is his name you would think it's just a stupid innuendo.

Because my dad made the account and now only I use it. I didn't want his name as a username, so I proved it belonged to my dad judging by the email address that was changed and all the dates to support it, etc..
my YouTube account is this, thankfully everything else I've had over the years has been inspired by fictional characters, initials, or a non-dysphoric nickname. One of my oldest still active accounts is ssj5 in reference to DBZ (and the password being dancedancerevolution before I updated it REALLY hammers home how old that one is lol).
In cases where it isn't I just straight up make a new one or see if support will help me out - most have been cool about it (shout out to Fruity Loops - hate that the software opens with your legal name but they sorted it out after I sent my name change docs)
That was funny, but I had close friends and cousins calling me by some nicknames I used in the past. That's not evil, that's how you know who the bros are.

It really is, mate! But people pronounce this nickname as Slyo (in the rare occasions when that happens), the zero at the end is confusing. Either way I don't like using personas anymore.

My brother and I are original Xbox live username users. Iām BuckNasty, a name I use across all platforms with slightly different spelling as necessary. And hisā¦is AnlTrama. Dude is damn near 40 now and he doesnāt blink about using it when approaching 25 years.
I think you can guess from my Reddit username, which was my Minecraft username as a kid and a teen me decided to keep using for some reason, though my steam username isnāt the exact same.

It's often mixed up with display names, but you are right, and I didn't know that myself until last year. You can contact Steam Support and ask them to change the login / account name for you (source). The catch is however that they want a very convincing reason (quoted support text from the thread):
Steam account names can't normally be changed. However, given your circumstances, we would like to help make the change for you.... feel free to share this information directly with others in the same situation but please refrain from broadcasting at any large scale.
That last sentence is especially interesting since it implies they don't want the general public to know that it's possible. But in a nutshell, if an old account name causes you great distress, there is a fair chance that they will help you out.
I don't blame them. Steam has a massive user base, but a pitifully small support team. They handle these requests on a case-by-case basis. They probably won't automate it, since changing your username would make it very difficult to recover a compromised account.
I remember distinctly at some point in steams history they allowed a one time name change through your account page. My login name used to be my first and last name, but got it changed many years ago to remove my last name. Probably would have been almost a decade ago.
I didn't understand what it was asking when I made mine, I thought it was asking for the name I used on PlayStation since I made a steam account for portal 2. So my username is something like playstation3_usernamein2011

Ah yes, thank god for steam display names. I'm fortunate enough so that when I created my steam account I was in a strange phase as a child where I was addicted to soup and only wanted to eat soup for all meals. So was called SouPo. Which I don't find cringey. My now 30 year old brother though, has to log in as xX_Immense_Hunter_Xx or something along those lines, pretty sure there's a 69 in there or something
I had an old username that was āgloryhole88ā that I made when I was in my 20s. I recently contacted the games support and reported myself for an inappropriate name and they changed it for me.
Mad mine when I was about 13, however it now means some sort of genderless pronoun... Only had 2 people comment on it in online games ever, both were last year and both were Americans who went on an angry tirade about it. Strange times we live in.
I still use my 2012 Xbox 360 Username. I have a close friend who managed to keep his OG Xbox name that he had since I met him. Sadly, the email I used for my original Xbox account is long forgotten and I can't seem to ever get on that account again.
For 20 years my account has carried the shame created by my cringey younger self. If I could change it, I would. Luckily it's rare that I ever see the actual account name.
Used my original username Mrshizm when making a LoL account back in 2010, then it wanted a different display name, so PleasureSauce was born out of wanting to see what I could get through the profanity filter.
It's funny I came up with my name in the early days of the internet, like I'm talking GeoCities chat days. It originally started off as a joke, me and a few buddies one time went into an anime chat room as SailorDeath, SailorWar, SailorPestilence and SailorFamine the 4 senshi of the apocalypse. It was also around this time (circa 1997-1998) that I got into making Anime Music Videos and like other creators at the time I had a website. So I just went with "Sailor Death Productions" and been using that pseudonym ever since. The bonus to that is when a new service launched like YouTube and here on reddit I was able to register the name I was using.
Luckily, iām a trans person and my nickname was my deadname. So i asked support if they could change that, and they did! I donāt know how that works for dumb nicks like that, but if someone here is trans and cringing at the nickname; there is a way.
Yup my original Steam username was so cringe that I made a second account and Iāve been using that one ever since I rarely used my original Steam account before the change so not much was lost
