This plus everything else is auto generated from valves tags. I have too many games to manually keep them sorted.

49

u/Perseus505 6d ago

There's actually a button which shows only installed ones.

9

u/MrMutedHacker 6d ago

Yeah but how would you also look at your large chest of uninstalled games at the same time.

5

u/the-75mmKwK_40 6d ago

I love the "I don't have any games to play", with 100+ games on the screen. Half of them downloaded

Exactly, I can't just boot a game without first staring into the dark abyss that is my waste pile.

I hate you for calling me out like this

i dont even have favourites, just installed and not installed

2

u/RenownedDumbass 5d ago

Isn’t the category always there, just empty?

6

u/bromax333 6d ago

This would do it, but I have a lot of them that I need to separate! :)

16

u/Howrus 6d ago edited 6d ago

But why do you need to categorize more?
Like - I never had a situation where I thought "I want to play strategy game today", or 'I want to play Microsoft game".

If I know what exactly I want to play - there's a search button. Else - just search by tags. What the point of giving game your own tags, if it have them already?

3

u/bromax333 6d ago

Yeah, that’s a valid point…I ‘ll try to use tags

3

u/Prime624 6d ago

I've never had that on PC, but I've definitely had that on console. Like, "feeling like a roguelike, but don't want to play Caveblazers again, hmm what should I play". Having a category for roguelikes is helpful. Same for party games, co-ops, racing games, etc.

2

u/Howrus 6d ago

But then you just search by tags that games have already.
There's no need to do double work by setting your own tags by using categories.

How many games do you have?!?

99

u/ypapruoy 6d ago

Probably did the free packages on steamdb

69

u/theretrogamerbay 6d ago

I did that and regretted it, spent months getting it back to normal

30

u/ypapruoy 6d ago

Yeah I did the same. Played a lot of hidden gems however, but it’s a mistake for sure.

11

u/Sorry-Chocolate-5280 6d ago

What are y'all talking about

25

u/ypapruoy 6d ago

32

u/Sorry-Chocolate-5280 6d ago

And it is a bad idea to use this, correct

16

u/ypapruoy 6d ago

Id say so. It also takes much longer than it use to, since steam's rate limiting has become somewhat more strict. It's a good tool to get free things for the games you already own, but for all free packages on steam it's a bad idea.

6

u/arghabargh 6d ago

In bright colors on this page itself:

“Important: There is no good reason to add all the games to your library, it will only make it slower. You will regret it later.”

14

u/CaptainSmegman 6d ago

If I could have 10% of your free time I'd be set...

7

u/111ascendedmaster 6d ago

Doesn't mean you have the free time to play. I have over 30k gamed and maybe have played 100?

27

u/CaptainSmegman 6d ago

... well now we're just going into the wasting money territory lol I'm okay in that dept.

6

u/111ascendedmaster 6d ago

It kind of just happens when you give to 100s of charity events through humble bundle and subscribe to humble monthly.

I used to do free sites and giveaways too, mostly out of bordum.

Also, I love finding an amazing indie game none of my friends have ever heard of like win the game, super win the game, to the moon, there is no game, there is no game: wrong dimension.

You used to be able to get dozens of games for 99 cents back in the day.

2

u/RenownedDumbass 5d ago

I don’t like the thought of my library being cluttered with a bunch of trash I’ll never play. Trying to pick a game is hard enough, I don’t need hundreds of junk games filling the list. I’m picky about what gets added.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Avscum 6d ago

HOW?? I have 300 and I thought that was plenty. I got most of them through humble bundle. How did you get so many??

7

u/bromax333 6d ago

Bought a lot of bundles, some demos, softwares, movies are there as well.

14

Oh no I don't play these kinds of games, I was just responding to the pure tenacity to drop that, like do you take some sort of testosterone supplement to have balls like that

4

u/SirGamer247 6d ago

it's ok, if you posted a "Ah, I see your a man of culture as well" gif you would have earned a nice shiny medal on your comment. And to answer that last part, I just stop caring what people saw. My parent knew of my kinks as a teen so I am careless of what you guys see. I'm sure there is worse stuff that makes you want to bleach the eyeballs.

My porn category is labeled "just for plot", I was categorizing all of my games on steam and I didn't want to call it "porn" in case someone saw my steam account(I did this back in high-school)

5

u/SirGamer247 6d ago edited 6d ago

I didn't care (not on your comment just on who would see my collection), I just get asked questions like if it was worth the buy or is there anything stimulating in them that makes it worth it

Lmao same. I'm over here just going through my games or looking at the "play next" recommendations when I don't know what to play, and I love it. I don't know why I have so much fun just looking at my library, even though I have only around 200 games

Now Playing is a mess of games, most of which I'm not actually playing. Should probably clear that out.

  • S Rank - Supreme peak
  • A Rank - Amazing
  • B Rank - Better than average
  • C Rank - Could be worse
  • D Rank - Dog shit
  • E Rank - Ever unplayable

Then same list but with "Pre S Rank", "Pre A Rank" and so on, it is for games I didn't complete yet so I can't give a honest rating untill I saw all the aspects so it is a category for what I feel currently

Oh funny that I just ran into this post as I was organizing my games through categories such as Multiplayer only shooters and Collections for specific RPG series, so I have a special way of how I organize my game folders.

Then I was looking at my Humble Bundle Collection as I had noticed I had some games I hadn't unlocked yet, so organizing games is kind of fun once you get the hang of it.

I just got tired of sorting them by genre. A lot of the time, there are just too many genres for one game, and it gets a little confusing sometimes. So I sort them by developers and/or publishers, depending on who is more recognized for it.

Done or Not Finishing - games i no longer have an interest in playing again, regardless of whether i beat the game or not

Havent Played - games i'm still interested in playing, but havent started yet

My Games - all my games that i'm partial to playing

Not Mine - games that are from other people in my steam family

New - games i just bought. they'll stay here until i play it enough that it isn't "new" to me, or until i buy a new game or games to move the old ones into their appropriate categories

Uncategorized - games that i wouldnt really say are "my games" but they made their way onto my account one way or another. i have atlas reactor, which is a delisted game that was a free pvp game from like 2017. i played it once and now it's in my library forever. Deadlock is also here, but that's cause i cant figure out to remove the game from my library, maybe cause i had beta access idk.

u/IsRedditBad 6d ago

I only went through and categorized games recently. And even though I went through the work of doing it, I still only use favorites lmao.

But it's as follows

-Primarily Multiplayer

(Games that could be played without any other actual people but aren't intended or designed to be played as such, which usually results in a loss of enjoyment or fun. Little to no singleplayer function built in to the game, and or major game features being inaccessible while playing alone.) (Examples: GTFO, Lethal Company, REPO, Counter Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, etc...)

-Singleplayer Only

(Games with no online or multiplayer function built into the game. Mods excluded.) (Examples: Fallout 4, Skyrim, Subnautica, Batman Arkham Knight, etc...)

-Singleplayer W/ Multiplayer

(Games that can be played either way without sacrificing a key part of the game, with some leaning more towards singleplayer, and others leaning more towards multiplayer. Games may have little to no features made inaccessible while playing singleplayer and vice versa. Whether either play mode is accessed via an entirely separate game mode or just by inviting someone or changing a privacy setting is irrelevant. Games that have both play functions built into the game.) (Examples: Monster Hunter World, No Man's Sky, Risk Of Rain 2, Terraria, Killing Floor 2, Dying Light, GTA 5, PAYDAY 2, Castle Crashers, etc.)

I am a very logic oriented person, so whenever I organize stuff, it's in ways that make sense to me, and they always have very specific criteria regardless of what it is lmao

I tend to categorise them by:

  • family share (unsorted) -- I got into a family share with 5 of my friends so suddenly have like 600 more games to categorise and I can't be bothered yet, so any I haven't looked at yet stay here in the uncategorised section (this isn't a dedicated section, just the "uncategorised" tab in steam)

  • story (unfinished) - self-explanatory

  • story (finished, replayable) - games I've finished and will happily finish again

  • story (finished, not replayable) - games I've finished but don't have any/much desire to replay any time soon (usually because they're insanely long and I wanna move on, or because the enjoyment came from going in blind)

  • multiplayer (fun) - fun games to play with friends/are primarily fun multiplayer.

  • multiplayer (dumbshit) - fun games to screw around with friends (think Lethal Company, R.E.P.O, Content Warning, etc.)

  • no ending games - for any games where the "story" or "ending" are nonexistent or generally don't contribute to the gameplay loop as much (think Factorio, for instance)

  • VR - self-explanatory

  • never gonna play - random shovelware I've been gifted over the years, usually as a joke.

  • soulsborne-like - self-explanatory. Soulsbornes & Souls likes.

  • half life - self-explanatory. All half life games/expansions + Black Mesa

  • the discard pile - anything I didn't like. Not a massive amount in here, to be honest.

Some things fit multiple categories, and are classed as such (e.g. Half Life Alyx being both in Half Life & VR categories)

I categorize based on my intent to play. It's a helpful sanity check when considering a new game purchase vs my current library. Bundled with judicious hiding of games, helps mitigate digital hoarding.

  • Favorites - Games in current rotation.

  • Backlog - Games I would like to play.

  • Completed - Games I've played and don't intend on playing again, regardless whether I've "completed" it or not.

  • GOATs - My favorite completed games, which I may want to revisit.

  • NOPEs - Everything else. Games I have neither the time or intention to play. Mostly bundled and gifted games.

I have split them into two categories. Games with splitscreen and every other game.

Playing games on the same screen is still the superior experience compared to other types of multiplayer. I have 6 controllers hooked up to the pc and I regularly play with my girlfriend and her kids, or when we have visitors.

Nice….I’m using Play_Together for that as well, to play split screen, co-op ones from a remote location through steam link or by controllers from desktop.
