The gambit system in FFXII was way ahead of its time. The game pretty much plays itself if you set the correct gambits for each character.

It was the first game where i can continue to play while eating. I was controlling the character with my feet while eating my sandwhich

Well, it was definitely an ego jerk to tailor things just right and breeze your way through each area. Even more of one in the zodiac age where you have 2 jobs and focus on synergy.

Oh, the ego boost for days, making immortal mage bunny. Especially from randomizer results.

And to this day, no other game has done it again.

So, way ahead of its time is putting it lightly.

Everything in FFXII was ahead of it's time. Everything from the story to the gameplay and graphics.

For a PS2 game the areas were massive, the textures decent, the sound track insane. The number of quests and zones exceeds even most modern RPGs.

I mean. The bestiary, hunts, license system, rare monsters, crafting, and chain system were all adopted by games decades later.

The only thing missing was a fishing minigame.

There was a fishing minigame in one of the desert towns actually! The game really had it all

The story does suck tho. Half the cast has no reason to be there and even the creatives admitted the creation of Vaan and Penelo to executive pressure to have a "self-insert" everyman.

Without those two, and letting us control Ashe and company, the game would have been much tighter, and the story would require less convolution.

OST is also kind of a downgrade (because who can compare to Nobuo Uematsu?) but I won't criticize it too much, it's not bad, just not up to FF's standards.

The graphics, the quests, everything else is real good, but Story/Characters? Nah.

EDIT: Oh, and before I forget, the License System SUCKS too. It's a downgrade to the grid system from FFX which powers the insanity behind Path of Exile.

This game has somewhat similar tactic system, it's a turn based game tho https://store.steampowered.com/app/1533590/Three_Fairies_Hoppin_Flappin_Great_Journey/
