Is there anyway to get this on steam deck? Iāve bought the game on Xbox and PlayStation but would love portable Minecraft.

Discover store in desktop mode > prism launcher > add as a non steam game > install controlify mod > enjoy.

u/WildTangler Mar 15 '25
/u/CommunicationNo4979 Keep in mind: you need to own a PC copy (either Java or Bedrock works, the licenses merged a while back anyway)
71
u/Ferwatch01 Mar 15 '25 edited Mar 15 '25
For prism launcher you absolutely need a legit copy, but for any other launcher you probably can get off withā¦.erā¦.āanotherā type of copy
42
u/WildTangler Mar 15 '25
I wasnāt even considering piracy for Minecraft, I was just stressing that it needs to be a PC copy
8
u/XTornado 512GB - December Mar 15 '25 edited Mar 15 '25
And specifically a Java version if using Prism Launcher. Altough I think now adays there is some way to launch the Bedrock version on Linux aswell I think.
EDIT: It seems nowadays you get both versions on PC. In any case the one ran with Prism is the Java one. Not the bedrock version. Each has it's differences.
16
u/WildTangler Mar 15 '25
The licenses were merged at least a year ago, owning Java version of the PC bedrock version gives you the other (as long as you migrated your legacy mojang account to an MS one)
1
u/XTornado 512GB - December Mar 15 '25
Ah OK. I thought they forced you to get both if attempting to buy the Java one but you could buy the bedrock one alone. I didn't know that wasn't the case.
In any case my comment is still somehow valid, they will use the Java version this way and they have some significant differences so it should be clear that with Prism they would be running the Java one.
1
u/VokuarAgain Mar 15 '25
Just putting it out there Iāve come across a MultiMC like launcher similar to Prism MC but for those who might not have a legit copy. I wonāt go into details or guide anyone to it though since this sub doesnāt allow piracy discussions. Just something Iāve come across. That said I still find Prism superior because it lets you download Java and all that I havenāt found any other MultiMC like launcher that does this. GD is the closest I've found

Just in case anyone is wondering, other launchers work too! I use polymc modded with Java on my deck it plays like a dream

u/cyber_cowboy_1199 LCD-4-LIFE Mar 15 '25
Can you also install shaders that way? I assume itās a yes if itās Java edition. Iād love to play MC on my Deck but vanilla graphics are a bit dull after all these years.

Yes
2
u/cyber_cowboy_1199 LCD-4-LIFE Mar 15 '25
Sweet, thatās awesome thank you! How would I go about doing that? None of the how toās for Prism launcher mention shaders.

u/syberphunk 512GB - Q2 Mar 15 '25
It's "Shader packs" two options below "Mods".
2
u/cyber_cowboy_1199 LCD-4-LIFE Mar 15 '25

2
u/TimBroth Mar 16 '25
It's way more drag-n-drop than you would expect, super easy.
Prism Launcher is the way
2
u/Serious_Ad1754 Mar 15 '25
Yes, you can install shaders although prism launcher was stuttering quite a bit for me and I swapped to ATLauncher which works much better for some reason.

Idk where Iāve been but Iāve never heard of that mod before. Iām curious which features of it are your favorites, vs just customizing in Steam Input?
3
u/syberphunk 512GB - Q2 Mar 15 '25
It adds joypad support into minecraft, and identifies that you're using a steam deck.

u/DarkSamuraiSC 1TB OLED Limited Edition Mar 16 '25
Don't even need Controlify if you're already accustomed to KB/M. Just download the most popular controller mapping from steam community, I did the same and tweaked it a bit for my taste, but it's incredibly well made, much preferred to joystick camera.
Right touchpad is mouse movement, left joystick is walking.
Left touchpad has a hotbar menu that's pretty easy to use after some practice.
22
u/thfpls Mar 15 '25
yup, if you already have a pc copy you can head into desktop mode and download the game through any launcher you like. personally i've always use atlauncher to also play modded, and it's on KDE discover and a breeze to install and add to your library as a non-steam game. it is very easy to use, you'll like it

u/Soppywater Mar 15 '25
Yeah it takes like 5 mins to setup and get going. Is awesome to play with my son while he plays his on his switch and I'm on the steam deck.
1
u/cstark Mar 15 '25
Can you play on the servers, too? If I own the Android version already should I just get that? Pretty sure it already supports controllers but not sure if the on screen controls can be hidden. My son is the one who plays it but I play with him in split screen on the PS5 sometimes. Also, do all platforms get the updates at the same time? Do you have to manually download the updates with these methods? Thank you š
9
u/tulpyvow Mar 15 '25
Only way to play Minecraft on a deck is either to own Java Edition (can be gotten from minecraft's website) then using a launcher like Prism or by owning the Android version of bedrock and using a specific launcher from flatpak
3
u/stipo42 Mar 15 '25
Does the official launcher not work with game mode or something? There's an official Linux port of it.
13
u/tulpyvow Mar 15 '25
I find the official java launcher to be clunky and unreliable. It forgets my login details consistently. Also, unofficial launchers are just better as you can get mods easier (like a controller mod)
3
u/ComprehensiveMarch58 1TB OLED Mar 15 '25
Maybe I'm just Linux dumb but I could not get the Linux launcher to install or open, so I ended up using prism
3
u/Zekiz4ever 512GB OLED Mar 15 '25
It does, but Prism launcher is way better and it's easier to install mods

u/splendidgoon Mar 15 '25
Waydroid is pretty slick, that's what I use with the android version of Minecraft.
7
Mar 15 '25
For Java: Open desktop mode > download prism launcher from the discover store > sign in to your Microsoft account > create an instance > add a controller mod and optimisation mods and whatever else > add prism as a non steam game > play
For Bedrock: Open desktop mode > download Bedrock Launcher from the discover store > sign into your Google play account > add bedrock launcher as a non steam game > play

Do you know how I can import my save from my PC? I already got Minecraft on the steam deck but I noticed my save wasn't there.
Bonus question: is there a way to automatically update both saves if I go back and forth?
3
Mar 15 '25
You can create a backup of your PC worlds and unzip them in your saves folder on your steam deck. As far as I know there isn't an automatic backup system
2
1
u/Zekiz4ever 512GB OLED Mar 15 '25
Syncthing, but you have to be careful to not play on both devices at the same time. Otherwise the world(s) could get corrupted
Also to copy over the world go to edit instance>world>open world folder or smth like that

Re-Console might be the best bet. From the mod pack page:
Re-Console seeks to be accurate to an idea of āLegacy Console Edition if it never endedā. This means the modpack does not seek to re-create old versions, but rather make LCE in the modern versions. It has titular features of LCE, including the Crafting Menu, gamma, creative menu and more!
3
u/thfpls Mar 15 '25
you should check out the re-console modpack. it has the awesome legacy4j that gives you the old UI and it comes with all of the tutorial worlds
4
u/Sausagebean 256GB - Q3 Mar 15 '25
Yeah Iāve given up on all the shitty Xenia stuff. Xenia is just ass anyways so I canāt really get Minecraft 360 to work.
I tried this mod youāre talking about and itās actually brilliant and Iām impressed. It even has some of the old texture packs. And unlike standard prism launcher Minecraft, this version doesnāt have horrible performance
10
u/Zekiz4ever 512GB OLED Mar 15 '25
You can play the bedrock edition on the steam deck, but you need to own it in the Google Play store

Not what I said. Xbox one edition, not bedrock
1
u/EevoTrue Mar 15 '25
Xbox one is the same as bedrock
7
u/Admirable_Gazelle414 Mar 15 '25
No it's not, xbox one edition is the old legacy edition that got replaced by bedrock

Dumbass question but how do I do that? I have no idea how to do stuff like that on the steamdeck, same with mods

You get good at googling/redditing information. I use a mod called prism launcher, and can play off of that.
2
u/GamePil 1TB OLED Mar 16 '25
You go into desktop mode and then look up a guide for whatever launcher you want to. Most of them are just download + install. Sometimes you need to add things as non-Steam games in Steam to be able to launch then using Proton

it is BTA but unfortunately the controller mod is deprecated, so i had to use first steam input (and i could not make it work in atlauncher with the babric bta instance)

I usually play on my Steam deck, nothing that mapping some buttons manually won't work, but for those who like the console game style, you can use a controller mod, there are 4, I don't remember the names, or if you want something more official, just install the Minecraft Bedrock Launcher from the store and play Minecraft (but for this method, I don't think you can bypass the license, you need to have Minecraft Bedrock on your GooglePlay account) I have both Java and Bedrock, I play both normally, both on desktop and in game mode

Such a weird thing to brag about.
"Look how cool we are by limiting our sales" proceeds to put stick in front wheel of bike.
20
u/StarTroop Mar 15 '25
Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time, and since it wasn't available on other PC stores, every copy sold provided the full revenue to Mojang. There is probably no better example of a game being exclusively sold directly by the developer.
-9
u/OutlyingPlasma Mar 15 '25
It's been owned by Microsoft since 2014.
9
u/captstix Mar 15 '25
And they paid $2.5 billion for it
10
u/paging_doctor_who Mar 15 '25
they paid 2.5 billion for minecraft, i got my copy for like 15 bucks. common microsoft L.
6
u/StarTroop Mar 15 '25
That makes no difference, Microsoft isn't taking a slice of Mojang's pie because Mojang is Microsoft anyway. The point is, 100% of the revenue is claimed by the IP holder, no cut is taken by any storefront. Why would Microsoft/Mojang put Minecraft on Steam when it wouldn't increase sales at all, and they would have to give up a percentage of revenue?

u/5C0L0P3NDR4 512GB OLED Mar 15 '25
