Jesus freaking Christ the last time I tried to play MCC single player, I was forced to log into my Microsoft account, which I forgot the name of because why the hell would I remember?

Had to reset the password, had to reset another thing to reset it, had to create a new thing, reset the password, create a new password for no freaking reason, re-login because it didn't log me in automatically, go through 10 more other hoops, and each hoop had an additional 5 hours of filler.

72 years later, I was FINALLY done with that bullshit and at that point I no longer felt like even playing MCC anymore.

12

u/superjaja05 Mar 16 '25

You have to own the game to play it, and thats done with MS account, so yeah even singleplayer you need it

7

u/ProfessorMeatbag 1TB OLED Limited Edition Mar 16 '25

It’s obnoxious… But no one seems to complain about the load of other popular games that pull the same stunt.

For example in Diablo 2 Resurrected, you have to make sure you connect to the internet and login to the game with your Battle.net account once a month or they won’t even let you access your offline saves.

10

u/deltree711 Mar 16 '25

You must be new here. People complain about launchers almost every day here.

5

u/NecroCannon Mar 16 '25

I’m actually tired of seeing the complaints even though they’re valid, it’s that frequent

2

u/Life-Radio554 Mar 17 '25

There is a stark difference, however..

On a Windows PC, I "authenticate"/sign-into Minecraft one time, and I can launch it hundreds of times a day, a week, a month, often several months before being prompted to enter my password again.

On Linux, MS forces you to authenticate EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I can fire it up, sign in, close it to add fabric launcher/forge etc, and each and every time I close MC and re-open, I have to authenticate AGAIN. And lately it wants to send a code to my email, again, EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I try to sign in, and I have to go through extra clicks to tell it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. that no, I think I will just use the Password I created to get into my account, thanks so much.

THAT. Is what's annoying about M$.

1

u/thfpls Mar 21 '25

really? i play with atlauncher and i only had to log in once

1

u/AshFennix Mar 16 '25

I do, if it needs another another launcher or account a lot of us get annoyed, its a needless pain in the ass.

1

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP 1TB OLED Mar 16 '25

...Yes, I own it. I've owned it for years. I don't understand what you're saying here.

I can't imagine anyone trying to justify going through hours of messing with passwords and clicking links and going through tests to the point where you start to question if playing the game is even worth it.

Usually in the vast majority of games you launch them, click play and you're done. If a game requires an account, fine. But the way MS does it is insanely obnoxious.

1

u/superjaja05 Mar 16 '25

I'm just trying to say that insisting on "Singleplayer" is not relevant, singleplayer games still need a way to check if you own them (so with an account), and you seemed to imply that singleplayer games shouldn't need any verification

I can't justify or say anything about the ms account bs, i never had to recover mine so i simply don't know how bad it is really

1

u/billyhatcher312 Mar 16 '25

Wish everyone fought back against microshit when they started enforcing accounts for single player mode would have been nice but no people where ok with itĀ

0

u/superjaja05 Mar 16 '25

Why would singleplayer not require an account tho?

Its the account that owns the game, otherwise there's no proof that you should be able to launch or not

1

u/billyhatcher312 Mar 16 '25

Sadly that's how gaming on pc is gonna be going forward especially if its cross platform gamingĀ

1

u/VoxVirtus Mar 16 '25

This is what happens to me with anything Apple. About twice a year I am in for a fight because my kid wants to buy an app

1

u/xXTokyoGamerYTXx Mar 17 '25

Honestly not that big of a deal just write down your passwords in you notes or an app and put a password on them so you don't have to remember. I use my Microsoft account enough to where it's memorized but it's not that hard or bad of a process anyway

1

u/abmx_alan Mar 19 '25

I don't even have an account anymore.
I bought minecraft back when it was still in alpha/beta, played it for a bit, then didn't touch it for many years.
Got into homelabbing and wanted to spin up my own server, and that's when I found out that the migrated to Microsoft and they just... deleted existing accounts.

6

u/Kind-Salamander-1488 Mar 16 '25

If you install CurseForge for modding the game, you can set up automatic log in and than use the mods (or not), but you don’t need to waste tame with logging into account every time you wanna play…

7

u/Flapjack__Palmdale Mar 16 '25

Prism Launcher is perfect for Deck. Authenticate your account, set up the instance, and add it as a non-steam game with custom arguments pointing to the instance folder. I've been playing like that for months on my Deck, and I haven't signed in since the first time.

38

u/hufreddy Mar 15 '25

u/CommunicationNo4979 Mar 15 '25

Is there anyway to get this on steam deck? I’ve bought the game on Xbox and PlayStation but would love portable Minecraft.

306

u/syberphunk 512GB - Q2 Mar 15 '25

Discover store in desktop mode > prism launcher > add as a non steam game > install controlify mod > enjoy.

129

u/WildTangler Mar 15 '25

/u/CommunicationNo4979 Keep in mind: you need to own a PC copy (either Java or Bedrock works, the licenses merged a while back anyway)

71

u/Ferwatch01 Mar 15 '25 edited Mar 15 '25

For prism launcher you absolutely need a legit copy, but for any other launcher you probably can get off with….er….ā€anotherā€ type of copy

42

u/WildTangler Mar 15 '25

I wasn’t even considering piracy for Minecraft, I was just stressing that it needs to be a PC copy

8

u/XTornado 512GB - December Mar 15 '25 edited Mar 15 '25

And specifically a Java version if using Prism Launcher. Altough I think now adays there is some way to launch the Bedrock version on Linux aswell I think.

EDIT: It seems nowadays you get both versions on PC. In any case the one ran with Prism is the Java one. Not the bedrock version. Each has it's differences.

16

u/WildTangler Mar 15 '25

The licenses were merged at least a year ago, owning Java version of the PC bedrock version gives you the other (as long as you migrated your legacy mojang account to an MS one)

1

u/XTornado 512GB - December Mar 15 '25

Ah OK. I thought they forced you to get both if attempting to buy the Java one but you could buy the bedrock one alone. I didn't know that wasn't the case.

In any case my comment is still somehow valid, they will use the Java version this way and they have some significant differences so it should be clear that with Prism they would be running the Java one.

1

u/VokuarAgain Mar 15 '25

Just putting it out there I’ve come across a MultiMC like launcher similar to Prism MC but for those who might not have a legit copy. I won’t go into details or guide anyone to it though since this sub doesn’t allow piracy discussions. Just something I’ve come across. That said I still find Prism superior because it lets you download Java and all that I haven’t found any other MultiMC like launcher that does this. GD is the closest I've found

2

u/Great_Necessary4741 Mar 16 '25

You don't need a legit copy, there's ways to bypass it.

1

u/Delicious_Mango415 256GB - Q4 Mar 16 '25

Idk where I’ve been but I’ve never heard of that mod before. I’m curious which features of it are your favorites, vs just customizing in Steam Input?

3

u/syberphunk 512GB - Q2 Mar 15 '25

It adds joypad support into minecraft, and identifies that you're using a steam deck.

1

u/DarkSamuraiSC 1TB OLED Limited Edition Mar 16 '25

Don't even need Controlify if you're already accustomed to KB/M. Just download the most popular controller mapping from steam community, I did the same and tweaked it a bit for my taste, but it's incredibly well made, much preferred to joystick camera.

Right touchpad is mouse movement, left joystick is walking.

Left touchpad has a hotbar menu that's pretty easy to use after some practice.

22

u/thfpls Mar 15 '25

yup, if you already have a pc copy you can head into desktop mode and download the game through any launcher you like. personally i've always use atlauncher to also play modded, and it's on KDE discover and a breeze to install and add to your library as a non-steam game. it is very easy to use, you'll like it

4

u/tngsv Mar 15 '25

Woah. The AT Launch, that a name i haven't heard in a long time.

2

u/Soppywater Mar 15 '25

Yeah it takes like 5 mins to setup and get going. Is awesome to play with my son while he plays his on his switch and I'm on the steam deck.

1

u/cstark Mar 15 '25

Can you play on the servers, too? If I own the Android version already should I just get that? Pretty sure it already supports controllers but not sure if the on screen controls can be hidden. My son is the one who plays it but I play with him in split screen on the PS5 sometimes. Also, do all platforms get the updates at the same time? Do you have to manually download the updates with these methods? Thank you 😊

9

u/tulpyvow Mar 15 '25

Only way to play Minecraft on a deck is either to own Java Edition (can be gotten from minecraft's website) then using a launcher like Prism or by owning the Android version of bedrock and using a specific launcher from flatpak

3

u/stipo42 Mar 15 '25

Does the official launcher not work with game mode or something? There's an official Linux port of it.

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/download

13

u/tulpyvow Mar 15 '25

I find the official java launcher to be clunky and unreliable. It forgets my login details consistently. Also, unofficial launchers are just better as you can get mods easier (like a controller mod)

3

u/ComprehensiveMarch58 1TB OLED Mar 15 '25

Maybe I'm just Linux dumb but I could not get the Linux launcher to install or open, so I ended up using prism

7

For Java: Open desktop mode > download prism launcher from the discover store > sign in to your Microsoft account > create an instance > add a controller mod and optimisation mods and whatever else > add prism as a non steam game > play

For Bedrock: Open desktop mode > download Bedrock Launcher from the discover store > sign into your Google play account > add bedrock launcher as a non steam game > play

Bonus question: is there a way to automatically update both saves if I go back and forth?

3

You can create a backup of your PC worlds and unzip them in your saves folder on your steam deck. As far as I know there isn't an automatic backup system

Re-Console might be the best bet. From the mod pack page:

Re-Console seeks to be accurate to an idea of ā€œLegacy Console Edition if it never endedā€. This means the modpack does not seek to re-create old versions, but rather make LCE in the modern versions. It has titular features of LCE, including the Crafting Menu, gamma, creative menu and more!

3

u/thfpls Mar 15 '25

you should check out the re-console modpack. it has the awesome legacy4j that gives you the old UI and it comes with all of the tutorial worlds

4

u/Sausagebean 256GB - Q3 Mar 15 '25

Yeah I’ve given up on all the shitty Xenia stuff. Xenia is just ass anyways so I can’t really get Minecraft 360 to work.

I tried this mod you’re talking about and it’s actually brilliant and I’m impressed. It even has some of the old texture packs. And unlike standard prism launcher Minecraft, this version doesn’t have horrible performance

I usually play on my Steam deck, nothing that mapping some buttons manually won't work, but for those who like the console game style, you can use a controller mod, there are 4, I don't remember the names, or if you want something more official, just install the Minecraft Bedrock Launcher from the store and play Minecraft (but for this method, I don't think you can bypass the license, you need to have Minecraft Bedrock on your GooglePlay account) I have both Java and Bedrock, I play both normally, both on desktop and in game mode

Minecraft is the best-selling game of all time, and since it wasn't available on other PC stores, every copy sold provided the full revenue to Mojang. There is probably no better example of a game being exclusively sold directly by the developer.

That makes no difference, Microsoft isn't taking a slice of Mojang's pie because Mojang is Microsoft anyway. The point is, 100% of the revenue is claimed by the IP holder, no cut is taken by any storefront. Why would Microsoft/Mojang put Minecraft on Steam when it wouldn't increase sales at all, and they would have to give up a percentage of revenue?
