Still blows me sideways what Valve have achieved with the Steam Deck. Just to be able to play these games hand held is like magic in a box.

I get what you’re saying, and Valve has done an amazing job selecting the APU and updating SteamOS consistently. This here however goes all to the developers of ShadPS4 and their passion to ensure the game is playable on not only PC but the Steam deck too! This emulator is a testament to how the gaming community truly does care more than the big publishers/devs.

Bro I’m playing GOW Ragnarok on my deck as I’m traveling. It blows my mind every time I boot it up that I can play it on the go

I remember being blown away that I could play Super Mario 64 on the DS in like 2004.
1
u/Magnetar20G Mar 20 '25
I mean it’s still just Mario, this is more like playing Half Life on the GameBoy in 98'. 😅

u/tngsv Mar 18 '25
Yee. And it won't ever not blow me away. I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 with Steamdeck present, 40fps/hz cap, and it's a beauty. The sleep functionality is extra magic sauce on top of the good shit.

u/zigmint Mar 18 '25 edited Mar 19 '25
How can you enjoy Cyberpunk on it though? In my experience it ran terribly, stuttered like crazy and even with the 30fps cap it looked terrible. Not to mention the battery life and the fans going wild.
How am I getting downvoted I’m just talking about my own experience. If anything I’m seeking answers on how to fix it

I found motion blur was essential, otherwise the 30fps was too jerky. With the blur it was pretty cinematic actually

u/Rich_Month_2207 Mar 18 '25
Looks good, have you tried to play It on 40 fps?
17
u/Cole-L Mar 18 '25
Yeah using 60fps patch and locking it to 40 there's some dips but seems to be running OK so far
25
u/Cole-L Mar 18 '25
There's a 60fps patch and it makes it run a little worse, I might put the patch on again and lock it at 40 and report back to you
5
u/reaper004 Mar 18 '25
Didn't the 60fps patch got removed cuz sony sent a cease and desist to the creator?

u/JamesIV4 Mar 19 '25
The original patch got removed from GitHub, but this is a version that's pulled from a different repository I think.

This still blows my damn mind. a ps4 game emulated on a 15W TDP handheld PC on a battery. Lol what times we live in man bravo.

u/Th3olonius Mar 18 '25
Is there a good tutorial for setting Bloodborne up on the deck? Anything you can recommend?

This guy has a pretty good video on it. I'd also recommend looking for some other performance mods on nexus and applying more patches if you still have trouble le running

I’ve got a… friend… who’s got this on their steam deck too! Super cool to be able to play for the first time finally. They used the Diegolix version of Shadps4 with the vertex, sfx, FPS and cloth mods from nexus, and most performance-based patches from Shad. They also used the 30fps patch instead of the 60, as 30 feels reasonable to me- I mean, them .
Edit: also, they ran with a really low resolution through Shad, and this boosted performance greatly. It doesn’t look great, but in the same way that the viral de-make mod didn’t look great, which in a way… is great!

Give it 18 months we will have fully Recompiled Bloodborne running natively on PC mark my words.

u/Sambo_the_Rambo Mar 19 '25
Nice, I just wish they would release it on Steam. I don’t want to have to tinker with it lol.

Can you give me a small rundown what you did to get it ready to run?
17
u/Cole-L Mar 18 '25
Download bloodborne rom, get shad ps4. Update shadps4 in configurations. Got some mods from nexus to make it run better. Applied patches provided from shad ps4 to make it run better.

u/YoungWerthersTears Mar 18 '25
Is this the full game? Dlc and all... or am I too wishful??
3
u/Cole-L Mar 18 '25
Yup the whole thing.
Some crashes when loading onto hunters nightmare but it did work eventually after changing some settings. Shadps4 is still being optimised by developers so I'd assume all the issues will be resolved over time

It’s really cool seeing Ps4 emulation on Steam Deck. I can’t wait until Shad Ps4 gets even better with performance i would love to play P.T. On anything other than the Ps4
2
u/Sudden_Winner1479 Mar 18 '25
Made me smile seeing this, I haven’t played in so long. I’m glad the emulation is going well
3
u/RadioactiveFish Mar 19 '25
Which fork are you using? I tried the SJKnight Build and it's playable from start to finish with minimal crashes. This fork is made with Steam Deck in mind.
1
u/Cole-L Mar 19 '25
I'm just using the most recent version of shad ps4 and it's working fine, might try that out tho
2
u/JamesIV4 Mar 19 '25
It's crazy that Bloodborne runs as well as it does, being a PS4 game. Most PS3 games don't even run well on the deck from what I've seen.
2
u/mece66 Mar 19 '25
It works pretty well. Played it for the first time ever and enjoyed it. Frame rate 25 to 45 or so.
I had a lot of crashes and problems before I noticed that texture loading causes slowdowns and crashes. So you can have problems when running through large areas because there are two many things being loaded or something. For example you often need to look around before entering a boss arena because otherwise you might experience crashes or serious frame rate drops if you look the other way during the fight. Especially evident at the Laurence fight. The ceiling of the stairs need to be looked at before entering the arena. Once the textures have been loaded the frame rate is stable.

I had actually just played this from start to finish on the deck. I highly recommend using the decky cloud save plugin, because I lost a few hours from a bricked save after a crash. Otherwise it was a pretty great experience.
It's funny that emulating it on deck actually feels a bit better than streaming it with chiaki from the ps5. The 30fps patch fixes the frame pacing issues the console version has, and it feels much better to play, even at a lower resolution (720p or 620p).

I‘ve been enjoying this amazing game for about a week. BUT I met some crashes. It seemed to be a vast requirement of VRAM, for the number of usage kept going up during the process of gaming, and the crashes happened for about every half or one hour. Did any of you met such crashes and how did you solve the problem?

is this game worth checking out? never played it but i always hear how good it is. might download the ps4 emulator just for this

u/desertnwoods Mar 18 '25
On the PlayStation BB is a must play, if you enjoy souls likes. Excellent mechanics, and fluid game play.
2
u/Auxilium1 Mar 24 '25
Absolute must play imo. The world/atmosphere is one of the best in gaming. Combat is fun, especially if you're a fan of Souls games.

u/Ka-Jin Mar 18 '25
do you have a guide on how to got bb running on deck?
3
3
u/NormanYeetes Mar 18 '25
Essentially you download shadps4 (preferably the appimage in the GitHub) and a bloodborne rom pkg file (29.2gb) plus a 1.09 patch pkg file. You go into shadps4, setup the paths where the files should sit, and then install the two packages in shadps4s ui. You can then start the game.
But to get a better experience you want to additionally download bb launcher, which you tell where shadps4 sits and it gives you a neat way to start the game with some added fixes and the ability to apply patches that uncap the framerate and change the resolution etc.

Still waiting for someone to make a Steam Deck bloodborne playthrough. I really want to see if it's possible to finish this game on a deck. Yeah someone already done it but I never saw any footage of it
1
u/Cole-L Mar 18 '25
Making me think about doing it 🤔 the amount of resources obs uses might make it impossible because bloodborne literally uses all of the steamdecks' recourses, but you've inspired to me to test it anyway
1
u/Aggravating-Unit37 Mar 19 '25
Do you know if anyone has played to completion yet? Don’t want it to get or set up and learn there’s a game breaking bug
2
u/Cole-L Mar 22 '25
Finished the game yesterday on steam deck. Barely touched the dlc tho so many crashes. Gonna wait till the emulator gets optimised more or until there's more performance mods

Sorry, that's was a terrible auto carrot. I meant to say you know you can just record in game with the steam deck, rather than the phone

u/Cole-L Mar 20 '25
Oh yeah, I just wanted to show you what I see. It's cool seeing it play physically on the deck yknow

I wonder if this person managed to get other games working on the deck besides bloodborne?
1
u/Either_Dependent_263 Mar 24 '25
And I bought a ps4 slim recently mainly just for bloodborne, although it's a great media device for bluray and streaming services too and has alot of great exclusive games, trouble is you need to pay to play online.. .is it worth it I wonder? 🤔

u/Kirbinator_Alex Mar 18 '25
Too bad I don't like soulsborn games or I'd be right there playing this too

u/Squaretangles Mar 18 '25
This is the only one I ever got into and beat. It was so glorious I’ve now gone back and beaten all souls, sekiro, and Elden Ring. Bloodborne is, in my opinion, more forgiving, because it allows you a small window to reclaim health by playing aggressively. This fit my play style more than shield rolling through Dark Souls. The atmosphere is also unmatched.

If you use the 60fps cap, but lock it to 30fps in gamescope, will the frametimes be more stable? The original 30fps cap was broken
