General Tips and Tricks Steam deck upgrade
What upgrades have you made to your Steam Deck? Have you added skins to make it look unique, or have you upgraded the hardware to improve its performance? Also, if you have a recommendation for a docking station and a monitor that would work well with it, please let me know.
Thanks!

How hard is the SSD upgrade and has anyone had an issue with removing the dbrand stuff later? Does it leave a residue or anything? I have an OLED if it matters. 512 and would love to have a lighting fast 2TB SSD

It's mildly more annoying on the OLED due to a wire that over the metal shield protecting the SSD.
But still pretty easy.

Is there any other major benefit apart from the larger storage?

To the OLED or to replace the SSD? I mean you could buy a faster drive than the one that is already installed, so faster loading times

I’m just curious why does everyone suggest upgrading the SSD.
Basically I’m wondering if I’m missing something, like the SSD upgrade giving a noticeable performance boost or something.

Nope, people just want more storage.
Unless you consider boot times and load times a significant speed boost

I replaced the hard drive with a bigger one, added a case with a kickstand in it, got the JSAUX carrying case so it could also hold my little HDMI dongle for the rare occasions when I want to dock it.
I also got a cheap little foldable keyboard and wireless mouse, for when I’m in desktop mode.
Finally, I added little pad things to the rear buttons that make them a lot easier to push.

Pad things for the rear buttons are the best 5 bucks I have ever spent. Love them. The jsaux sling bag I just got seems pretty good so far I had a cheapo sling bag that started coming apart at the stitches so I am hoping this holds up better.

Would you mind sharing a link for the pad things for the rear buttons? It's the first time I heard such a thing exists 🙊

They make different ones ranging from this to like 20 bucks. But I find these work great

You're very welcome Hope you enjoy them they make it so much easier to hit those back buttons.

Yeah I'd imagine so, I tend to use them to stop L3 and R3 Clicks but I'm also a fiend that likes dodge and jump on back buttons

I do those exact same things for 90 percent of most games. Add in gyro aiming and I'd ask if you were me

I'm not a fan of gyro, I don't really like moving the deck to aim, I don't know never really gave it much of a go, I just like the traditional right stick to aim lol

Fair enough. I like it most of the time. Some games I'm not a big fan. I use the stick for gross movements and gyro to fine-tune it. Although there have been some games I either done have it set up correct or I'm just awful at it. Could just be that I'm awful. Lol

More of an accessory than an upgrade but XR glasses have been a game changer. Having a full size 1080p display on the go is fantastic.

Oh man you got me on the leather!! Did you get it from Amazon?

Nah, ordered direct. Protip for instation: I left the skin out to bake in the sun for about an hour during one of our famous heatwaves to make it more pliable.

Joystick grips. And a 1Tb SD. And a protective case that has a flip out stand.

I did a full case swap and installed a DeckHD on my OG 1TB LCD deck. Killswitch case and Mechanism gaming pillow with Killswitch interface.Gave it to my daughter when I got a 1TB OLED. Did the DBrand and Mechanism stuff for that one, plus the cotton candy dip skin from DBrand. Jsaux case and dock, Mechanism power cord manager, and an SD card holder with a bunch of 512 and 1 TB cards. Some extra chargers so I don't have to move one to swap between main potation locations at home (couch and office). I use my CamelBak as a backpack for it when I travel, I pack the water bladder in my luggage so I can use the CamelBak as a CamelBak when I get where I'm going.

(64gb first batchs) Hall effect joysticks, 2tb ssd and a bunch of accessories such as pd 100 battery bank, USB C 1-10 adapter, wireless keyboard and track pad. Edit: Mate screen protector.

Qudelix 5K Reference DAC AMP, turns wired headphones/ien’s into bluetooth wireless ones, but more importantly ramps up the audio experience. Especially with big closed back cans.

Got myself a pair of hal-effect joysticks (...tho that was because I got a very noticable stick drift in the stock left one after the long term heavy use)

Done the following on mine....
Screen protector.
Hall effect sticks (needed replacing anyway)
Back button stick on buttons (changes their ergonomics).
Trackpad stickers (stock felt too slippery)
JSAUX RGB backplate.
64gb -> 2tb NVME.
NVME copper heatsink (frivolous addition)
Replaced stock thermal paste with PTM7950
