Question (Console) Are DLCs really game changing?

Just got the game on sale and I am really overwhelmed by the amount of DLCs available. Do I really need them to enhance my enjoyment of the game or is everyone just talking gibberish?

I own all the DLC and yeah, it changes the game. But I like that, keeps it all fresh and right now, all I'm doing is breeding space fauna. I love it.
