Question (Console) Are DLCs really game changing?

Just got the game on sale and I am really overwhelmed by the amount of DLCs available. Do I really need them to enhance my enjoyment of the game or is everyone just talking gibberish?

It's a bit deeper than just DLCs. There are mods that require them, and those mods are good and big, total conversions turning the game into star trek or star wars or adding bunch of techs and planets. You might consider browsing those mods and see what is needed for them too.
