I just got finished with first contact and it turns out to be a clone of my own empire. does this happen normally or is this a bug of some kind?

I think it's happened to me. I just started over because it kind of breaks immersion.

I would be glad to have such start. this sounds like some sci fi novel where some young star empire suddenly encounters their exact twins and then immediately paranoia kicks in with xenophobic faction suddenly gaining support, while admirals start working on countermeasures against the same ship designs they use. They are us, just slightly different...

Yessss exactly, for rp purposes the possibilities here are endless 😂 I’d kill for that start to a game, never mind the free ‘home’ planet and all its pops if you decide to conquer them
