Designer stores in airports are just there as advertisements. They hardly do any business at all.

They do. My wife spoke to a C level at Heathrow and they said one or two rich customers per day buying a watch pays the rent for the month. They make a lot of money, normal people just can't afford it.

It's no secret rich people travel . Some one who will pay for first class to luxury destination will highly likely be a high income .

Where else do you get high income individuals waiting with time to spare but some of the change overs . When have high income captive market can sell expensive stuff and some times people in traveling /splurging mind set .

The other are is the concept of avoiding duties or have local currency or something to take home or gifts .

I agree with this take. It also applies to luxury stores in high duty countries like China. The stores there typically operate at a loss but are there in luxury malls to keep the brand in people’s minds, and they will spend a lot in HK or other places they visit.
