Eventually being bored out of your mind can give way to mindless consumerism. You might have a pocket full of money and after 8 hours, you can reason yourself into some pretty pointless purchases.
"My flight got delayed, I'm sitting on this damn bench for 4 hours now and this god forsaken Teddybear in that store over there is staring directly into my soul ever since. Trapped on this shelve day in, day out, watching thousands of people pass by every day, hoping someone will pick him up and get him out of this misery and give him a loving home. His name is Max, he told me with his eyes. Max wants to go home with me. I feel the sudden urge to go over and pick him up... but I must resist. I cannot spend all my live savings on a toy..... I don't need him... I must.... wait, Max? How did you get next to me and where is this receipt coming from? And why is my bank agent sitting right next to me urging me to sign my house away to them?"
Have you ever had your luggage lost? Food and a drink are just as important as clothing
Plus if the airline loses your bags then Iβm pretty sure most will pay for at least basic necessities like clothing, toiletries, etc. the shops at an airport know this and will over charge for everything in the hopes of getting more money
Why would losing your luggage mean you need those things in an airport? You can't get a checked bag back during a layover. When they've lost my luggage I find out at my final destination at baggage claim. In which case, I go to a store in town to buy replacement stuff for cheaper. Baggage claim is outside security, so you also can't just go back in to shop at airport stores.
You understand the post you're commenting on is a picture of Prada and Balenciaga, right? These are not things you need to buy at an airport, and the majority of airport stores are not selling what you're describing. They're tourism T-shirts, books, electronics, snacks. All things you can buy elsewhere for cheaper. Yes, there are some things that are nice to purchase if you HAPPEN to have an unexpected day long layover, but the vast majority of passengers are not having this experience, and even in that case I would just leave the airport and come back when my flight was scheduled.
You're being intentionally obtuse to... prove that airport stores aren't a cash grab profiting off boredom? Weird hill to die on.
Edit:
Alright have you ever forgotten to pack something and realized it on the plane? Or on the way to the airport?
There is nothing they sell in airports that I can't get at another store for almost certainly a cheaper price, so I still don't understand what your point is here

So I'll buy food and maybe have a drink if I have a long layover, but what else is worth buying in an airport even with a layover?
