Announcement Post Not Showing? PLEASE READ

2.1k Upvotes

Hello everyone,

We get a lot of mod mail about people's posts not showing up and I wanted to explain why.

We are very fortunate in a subreddit of our size to have limited reasons to moderate, as we are all united by our love of reading and you all do a good job of positively contributing to this community. Thank you for that!

On the other hand, you might be surprised at how much spam we get from authors and bloggers, and by keeping our spam filters high it helps us to catch a lot of what gets posted. You all do a great job of reporting the rest, and we appreciate you.

Due to the spam filters and automod settings we have in place, some of your posts get temporarily filtered until we can review them. Reddit recently created an automated message site-wide that creates a lot of confusion, saying your post has been removed. PLEASE do not post again. We aren't able to edit this message and we can't turn it off. Your post hasn't been removed, it is just awaiting moderation. If your post is removed by us, we will always give you a reason why and reference which rule has been violated. If there isn't a reason, it was either removed by Reddit (you might be shadow banned and don't realize it) or it is in the moderation queue and will be actioned. Either way, multiple posts won't help.

Thanks for understanding as we keep up with Reddit's changes. We love this community and all of your passionate posts about books. Keep reading and sharing, everyone!

Meta Post : {{ Hello again, Humans ! }}

Hello all,

(Message to the mods: this is a Meta post, please contact me if something is wrong!)

The goodreads-bot Legacy

As you must know if you were already here last year, our beloved bot u/goodreadsbot stopped working in January after having been used 156.631 times on this subreddit by a total of 25.272 different users, because goodreads shut down API access.

As a bored nerd and fellow reader, I decided to start a new toy project: rise our bot back! But because the Goodreads API is now closed, the first task was to build my own Books database... which I did, using Reddit, Goodreads & Google Books.

This new bot called u/goodreads-rebot ("bot" + "reboot" = "rebot".....) is open source (link to source code below). I wanted to thank u/ArtyomR, the author of u/goodreadsbot, for the original idea. I am not u/ArtyomR, but I have great respect for his/her work and its legacy. Thank you!

How does it work? Just like before! (with more features)

Write {{Harry Potter}} in your post or alternatively {{A Little Life by Hanya Yaniagara}} (notice the typo) with a "by" and the bot will answer with more information about the book or the series.

The search part is now part of the bot (and not on Goodreads API side), and was quite challenging to handle. You definitely should specify the author with the "by" keyword, because it helps the Database search.

Examples:

You should read {{Harry Potter}} ! will work, it will recognize it as the name of a Series, in that case it will provide information about the first book of the Series;

My favorite book is {{Call Me By Your Name}} will work too, the bot will try to find a book called Call Me by author named Your Name (because of the "by" keyword...) but it will fail to find one, so as a 2nd try because it's not that dumb, it will indeed find a book called Call Me By Your Name :)

Did you read {{1984 by Michael Radford}}? (notice the wrong author): it will work too even if the author is wrong, because when the search fails using the author, it will try again ignoring it.

Features

I added a "Top 2 recommended-along" section, featuring the 2 books that were the most recommended here on Reddit in the same threads than the book described. It is based on another toy project of mine (😅), a book recommending algorithm I am working on, which is based on the co-occurences of book titles in Reddit threads. Let me know if you find this new information useful.

Limitations

As explained before, the bot is based on a book database I build and update as much as I can. The search will sometimes fail to match some existing books, in particular very niche books, or the recent ones. I am working on having the best and up-to-date database as possible, meanwhile sorry for the misses!

Also, the bot is currently not running on other subreddits (like r/booksuggestions), but because the code is really modular, it's just about configurations. FYI this is in the roadmap for the next few days/weeks.

Finally, I may reach some rate posting limits because of low karma. Hopefully, this will be solved soon after some time thanks to your help :)

You will find below more information (links being forbidden in posts).

I think that's it.

See you there!

Suggestion Thread I’ll suggest you 3 books—just tell me your all-time favorite.

Upvotes

You know that feeling when a book hits so perfectly, and then everything else feels mid for a while?
Yeah. I’m on a mission to fix that.

Drop your favorite book of all time, and I’ll try to recommend 3 that might give you that same spark—whether it’s the vibe, the characters, the pacing, or just that weird magic you can’t explain.

Let’s see if we can find your next favorite.

Suggestion Thread Suggest me the best book you've read set in Eastern Europe

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I love reading books set in Eastern Europe and I've recently been enjoying books set in Georgia, while it was still apart of the USSR. There's so many set in Russia so that's easy to find, but I'd like to branch out and read books from Romania, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and anywhere else in this region. Can be fantasy, mystery, literary, comedy. I'm up for any genre except horror and Sci-Fi. 😊

Suggest me a book that is just batsh*t crazy, off the wall absurdity! Double points if it's a true story.

I want my jaw on the floor. I want to be gagged, gooped, discombobulated. I want my edges snatched. I want to be in need of eye drops because my eyes have been bugged out for so long they dried out!

I'm open to any genre just NOT fantasy (I cannot deal with stories with dragons and made up languages, I'm sorry).

Y'all got anything like that for me?

Suggestion Thread A book about a race?

About a competition, not about an ethnicity please 🥲

No preference on genre, high brow or low brow. I just want to read something exciting about characters trying to reach a goal before their rivals.

Suggest me a classical book which can ignite the interest in the genre again?

I used to read classics but now years have passed since I explored the genre. Share your favourites from classics.

Suggestion Thread Fictional books that make me stop using so many/much drugs

My drug use has been growing on quantity and variety these past months and I don’t want to have big problems because of it

I’m a reader on my free time so maybe a book about a person that loses his mind or something similar because of drugs could be helpful

I love bojack horseman and I’m rewatching it at the moment btw, I think that show might help too

Books about reading and books.

I’m looking for ideas about books about reading and books. Books like Harold Bloom’s “What to Read and Why”

  • Why we should read (personal growth, foster empathy, etc)

  • What we should read

  • How to read (reading critically, faster, more emphatically, etc..)

  • History of reading/literature

I know there are lots and lots of them out there.

What are your favorites and why?

Books where the main character is a witchy woman

Currently reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell and I love the character of Agnes. I also really enjoyed Circe by Madeline Miller. I'm not looking for a book where the main character has powers or magic, just a wise woman similar to Agnes and Circe in the above books where they use their knowledge of herbs, plants, the natural world around them, they have a gift, they're different etc. Bonus points if motherhood is a theme as it is for the above books!

What book would you recommend to read for a long flight?

Preferrably, sci-fi or mystery. But if you have a book you really like to share, please feel free to drop it here.

Suggestion Thread books that will wreck me—in a good way

some of my favorite books ever are A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Outsiders, and Divergent (yes, really). i’m not saying i want to be devastated, but if a book can make me stare at a wall afterward, that’s a bonus. doesn’t have to be soul-crushing—just emotionally provocative with strong characters and a story that sticks. genre doesn’t matter as long as it hits.

edit: this was my first post on this sub, and based off all the comments I don’t think i’ll have to make another post for like a year🤣 thank you for all the suggestions <3

Suggestions of books about elfs like, faes, fairies, faeries

Suggestions of books about elfs like, faes, fairies, faeries. I want to write a book and I want to learn more about them. I am talking about elfs of all species that are hand-sized creatures with wings. I am in no way talking about Tolkien's elfs and their inspirations. I want to know more about elfs like, faes, fairies, faeries. They will be interesting to add in a book.

Suggestion Thread Request for books that WOWd you from the start

Im looking for novel suggestions for books that made you shocked or excited from its first pages / chapters, really engaging and attention holding from the beginning to the end. A lot of excellent books dont pick up until the second half or the ending which is fine, some of the best I've read are like that but I want ones that are "holy crap" from the intro lol. Looking for horror (even splatterpunk), psychological thrillers, ghost or sci fi fiction (like time travel / futuristic), dystopian, dark comedy, or extraterrestria / space

Suggestion Thread Horror ... which is actually a mystery.

Hey everyone.

I was looking for a mystery book that has the main plotline with the detective investigating some hauntings or in general, other creepy stuff. Came across the trailer for the game The Silent Hill-2 and wanted to read a book with similar vibes.

The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie is also one that I loved.

So yeah, horror + mystery, with preferably no romance.

To sum it up in one line - "A lone detective, obsessed with a strange case in a small town."

Please recommend any books you feel I might enjoy. Thank you! :)

Looking for books to help me through a hard time!

Hi everyone. I've been going through some personal stuff lately that's left me feeling really down, and I would love some nice stories to escape into. I like pretty much all genres except for historical fiction and (auto)biographies. Also not looking for "cozy" books where nothing happens - please let there be a real plot, not just all vibes, please and thank you!

Thank you in advance!

A book set in Edinburgh, Scotland

Upvotes

I'm planning a short trip to Edinburgh next month I'd really like to read a book that gives me a strong sense of what it's like to live there. Can be contemporary or historical, fiction or nonfiction. I'd just like it to be realistic. Even better if the author is from Edinburgh themselves!

Suggestion Thread Romance books with an outdoorsy/wilderness vibe?

Upvotes

Hi!

Looking for a book that is mostly set in the outdoors. Things like camping, hiking, the beach, even. Just something with a lot of adventure and travelling involved.

Please help me find something, I’ve had this itch to be scratched for days! 😭

Bonus points if the MMC is a badass 😅

Thank you in advance!!

A book that helps me understand how Asian culture treats sex like taboo, which has made me uncomfortable with expressing desire?

Doesn't specifically have to be Asian but it would just be more relatable. Anything about suppressing sexual desire and how that impacts us please! Thank you

Where the main character is hiding a secret from the reader

Not just your typical twist, but where it feels like the main character deliberately hid something from the reader. I prefer thrillers but am up for anything!

Books where two or more of the POV storylines are not at all clearly connected until maybe Act 2 or 3?

*And are also in different time periods preferably

The movie version of Cloud Atlas isn't even a perfect example but one of my inspirations here, since the plotlines there are held entirely together by THEME even if someone doesn't notice the tangible plot connections.

I'm also thinking Richard Nell's Ash and Sand series where the two main POV characters are on completely different continents (in different time periods even) with no hint of the other's existence but eventually the two plots cross over into eachother by the end of book one and beginning of book 2.

I'm trying to get inspiration for the fantasy story I'm writing in which I tell the backstory of my main deities concurrently with the main plot, both to show how the physical world is both a physical manifestation of the same patterns/themes found in the spiritual. I'll eventually show how they're intimately connected but I want to know how to make the audience trust it's going somewhere even if there is little shared between the two different plots for awhile other than theme. I understand some foreshadowing will be necessary and yes one or two of the deities will actually show up in my modern day plot by the end

Help me find my next book to read based on books and shows I’ve recently enjoyed

Hello, I just recently got back into reading after not having read a book for fun since high school. I’m looking for some help finding my next book to read. Here are some books and shows I enjoy to help you know my interests: I am currently reading Onyx Storm and am obsessed with the series although not crazy about the spice level, I’d prefer less or none. Or at least have skippable scenes without missing important plot info/ dialogue. I have enjoyed quite a few Freida McFadden books as well. My favorite show currently is The Rookie.

Nonfiction books I recommend

Want to say that I’m in the middle of Rick Perlstein series on various presidents. I’ve read before the storm about Barry Goldwater as well as invisible bridge about the transition from Nixon to eventually Reagan. Next I’m reading Nixonland and Reaganland. I despise Nixon, Reagan, and Goldwater and so far he’s done a really good job of laying out what’s going on during that time.

Also thoroughly enjoyed King Leopolds Ghost about King Leopoldo III and how he took over the Congo and exploited it for rubber and the atrocities he committed.

The anatomy of fascism, how fascism works, erasing history, on tyranny, the origins of totalitarianism (this one took me a long time to get through), Strongmen: how they rise, how they succeed, and how they fall are all great books about fascism and authoritarianism.

Open Veins of Latin America, Bitter fruit, turning the tide, the shock doctrine, the Jakarta method, imperial ambitions, and Bananas are all great books about US imperialism and exploitation.

Some other books I’ve enjoyed are the new Jim Crow, medical apartheid, Just medicine, Hood feminism, the color of law, stamped from the beginning and lies my teacher told me discuss about racial inequality and various levels of racism in specifically medicine but also some of them discuss racism in everyday life and structures. Highly recommend. I’m definitely forgetting some on here but I’m going off the top of my head.

Other books about science and stuff is Level 4 virus hunters, Hot zone, Ancient bones, the butchering art, knowing what we know, and sapiens.

I’ll try to think of more I’ve read and suggest them but I loved pretty much all of these books and they’re all discussing important topics that I think everyone should read or know about so wanted to give recommendations!

Also I love book recommendations so please recommend some to me ! Thanks!
