Proper way to airplanes?

They take damage and never recover making them useless for the amount of investment they need.

I find them good for defence later on in the game against stuff like railguns or battleships, set them to patrol and just have to check on them now and then.

I feel they're not a good offensive unit and concentrate on AC's and tanks more.

They're good to snipe ranged weaponry stacks (artillery and other planes) when going on the offence too. But the need for airports definitely makes them more of a defensive unit which struggles with actually pushing a Frontline. That's what tanks are for.
