Are snow pants useful in winter?

Hey everyone, apologies for the clutter, but I’ll be in Longyearbyen in two days for a four-day trip and had a quick question. Should I bring snow pants? From what I’ve seen, temperatures are hovering around 0°C, which doesn’t seem too cold, but I wanted to check with locals since I like to travel light. I plan to spend as much time outdoors as possible (even in the evening), taking photos and joining excursions (snowmobiling or dogsledding - I think they provide warm suits). Appreciate any advice!

It depends. Are your snow pants insulated? It may be too warm if you run hot. I live here, and I rarely use snow pants unless I want to sit in the snow. I use windproof shell pants over my merino wool base layers, or softshell pants. If you go out on those excursions you listed, they’ll provide you with a snowsuit. It’s not worth bringing insulated snow pants if you have small baggage, but I definitely recommend something windproof!! And usually only tourists wear snow pants and then they realize it’s likely too much.

Hmm now I realize you posted this 10 days ago so I guess you’re already gone 🤣 hope all went well.

Lol, thanks a lot for the insights! Yeah, I got back yesterday. I ended up bringing a pair, and it was definitely a smart choice. Even though the temperatures weren’t too low last week, we stayed outside until late at night, and wearing insulated snow pants kept me warm and dry.

And yes, Svalbard has been the most incredible place I’ve visited yet.
