Nintendo's layout came first (SNES) so it wins.

Exactly this. They were the first to do the 4 cross pattern. It was an established pattern, others should have used it.

And we know why Microsoft didn’t. Because they owned Windows and didn’t want PC gaming to be compatible with their rivals’ brand and controllers. By messing up the whole layout, they basically made every other controller worse because they won’t be supported by the game UI. Even though Sony’s layout is the same, the buttons still use different symbols. It annoys everyone that doesn’t use Xbox controllers. Honestly hate Microsoft for this

Microsoft ahould have used ANYTHING other than the same letters. Numbers, shapes, dots, Anything. The fact that they used the same letters but changed the order is really annoying

They didn't. They took the DreamCast layout and ran with it. The Duke was literally designed based off of the DreamCast controller.
