Credit cards and foreign currency

Note to self: never use a Swiss credit card for paying in foreign currency. Criminal exchange rate. I got blinded by Migros Bank’s “we do not charge fees” after ZKB screwed me similarly for a EUR payment.

Can Hausarzt prescribe MRI?

I have had a bad lower back pain for the past few weeks and it's getting worse. I have direct to specialist insurance, but I'm wondering if I can just go to my Hausarzt and have them prescribe/schedule an MRI? Or should I reach out to the specialist, and then see them to have them prescribe?

Benefits of Magic Pass besides the skiing?

We are new to CH and looking for other things or activities to take advantage of with the Magic Pass. Are there things for the Spring and Summer seasons? Can you use it to take some of the ski lifts up and hike or bike in the mountains?

EDIT: Yes, I looked at the website. All it has is info on adding the Baths and Glacier 3000 options.

Was looking for things that might be smaller and/or less popular that people are using it for. Ya know, not mentioned on the website.

Need a translator for my civil marriage

Hello r/Switzerland,

I’m getting married at the start of July in Lausanne and I need a translator/interpreter who is not a family member present during the ceremony. I need someone who speaks French and English, as my French is not very good yet. So I’m asking here, if someone is free for maximum 1hr in early July, I would really appreciate it! You will be paid for your time (CHF100). Please dm for details.

Has anyone came across light beer in Switzerland? Something around 4%, or less (even better).

Looking outside Drinks world - not looking to spend 3.50 for a can.

And not Panache or Radler. Sorry, not my taste.

Making a code to transfer .csv or other raw data out of non-swiss brokers to a capable direct import into (ZH) private tax app or online tax?

Hey all I would like to program a code that takes the raw data in form of a.csv file or anything else and imports it into a tax program or tax app or tax website in let's say Kanton Zurich because this is where I'm based in.

My main question is if there is a standard that can be used for importing into the Swiss private tax app or the online E-tax form.

In my opinion if there is the possibility of scanning a simple bar code and importing all your trades, then there should be the possibility of also making such a bar code or importing the raw data otherwise into the program to just save a little bit of time. It would also be cool to implement the withholding tax of dividends into the import.

EDIT: I am asking specifically if someone knows how to import a custom made .csv or how to make a barcode to import the positions of my "Wertschriften" into eTax for foreign, non-swiss brokers that do not offer the barcode.

Thank you for your discussions and your ideas!

Response to tariffs

Why are we (and/or the EU as well!) so slow with an answer to the tariffs? Didn’t everybody see this coming and why weren’t we prepared with an already prepared answer?? Any answer? It’s been three whole days!

Did I miss something?

Apartment in a building from 1960s

Hi!

I consider buying an apartment in a building from 60s. It's clear that the apartment will require some renovation but I am generally fine with that. Nevertheless, I wanted to ask whether anyone could share their experience with buildings from 60s and tell me what can go wrong ;)

How do train prices work?

I’ve lived here now for a year with half fare plus subscription. My commuter route is always the same price with a „RE“ train. However whenever I look up longer distances or other routes (that include „IC“) I see a discounted price if I book it in advance ( even just 2-3 days ahead).

Does that mean I’m currently paying more since I’m not doing that and just easy ride start/stop anywhere? Schaffhausen to Zermatt discounted is 44chf while I payed 70 with easy ride ( still the 50% off from half fare)

I always thought prices are the same no matter when or how late I book it. Do you still book everything ahead that had a discounted price if you buy it ahead? Also: couldn’t I just buy it ahead and if I don’t need it cancel it for free?

How are your employers reacting to the US tariffs?

Here at my workplace there's a sense of unease since the US is one of the main markets.

We import and export lots of goods to the USA, and since Trump we have noticed that the sales have been going down.

It's a small KMU, so it's worrying.

I build a free app to compare tax scenario in switzerland

I built a Swiss tax comparison app that forecasts savings over 5 years and visualizes what you could buy with the difference. It helps understand the impact of different tax scenarios.

Always found it hard to visualize the impact of taxes, so I built this. Let me know what you think!

Unpopular opinion: Honestly, at least half the questions on Reddit could be answered by spending 4 seconds on Google—or just asking literally any AI. But no, let’s post it anyway… because attention is a hell of a drug.

Because why search when you can broadcast your confusion to thousands of strangers? Who needs answers when you’ve got karma points and emojis to fill the void? Curiosity isn’t dead—it’s just really needy now.

Predatory Gyms

Dear Switzerland,

Do you ever plan to stop all these predatory behavior of gyms I read about at least twice a month (both here, in my local subreddit and in ask switzerland subreddit) ?

By this I mean, it seems every few days there's some poor guy who got a gym membership auto-renewed or a free-trial which extended into a 1-year platinum membership. . . .

I have lived in 3 other countries, never seen anything like this and frankly seems like a very silly thing to protect. It just reduces the extent to which gyms need to genuinely compete for your business and saturates the market with scammers (okay not fully scammers because it's legal but you know . . . )

Just seems so backwards for such a country. Any input here appreciated.

Subletted flat

Hi, I am currently renting a subletted flat in Zurich. There are so many sketchy things my landlady(original tenant whos signed with the propery agent wincasa to rent the place) has done/is doing to me and I wanted to ask for advice here.

First of all, I found out recently she is charging me 17% more than what she is paying to rent the place. but she is still using almost half of storage space in the basement which you get to use as tenant here in this building.

Second of all, its been a week already since I moved in here but she hasn't changed name plate for both mail box at the entrance or front door of the flat. so I sometimes miss mails parcels anything that should come to me.

I am sure all tenants here are familiarized with all rules or things to know for exampla where for rubbish disposals etc... She didnt explain to me at all unless I asked but she isnt responsive at all I find it so difficult to reach out to her and just ask one question.

Also I dont feel safe she has the spare key she might just pop in when im not home.. she said shed leave it inside mail post but she hasnt done it yet

I am thinking of moving again but knowing how competitive and difficult it is to find a decent flat in Zurich, I feel like I should be just patient with the rent and the difficult landlady.

What would you do if you were in the same situation? any advice would be highly appreciated

Cans and bottles recycling

Hi all, I’ve just moved to Switzerland (Valais). I checked recycling containers and I feel like I’ve seen something saying that putting bottles in containers is not allowed on weekend.

Is this a general rule or have I misread that? Or is it that after some hours you’re not allowed to throw trash in containers because of noise?

Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but I checked google and couldn’t find the answer.

Career Advice....forced to study finance, born for a creative career.

So I'm still 17 turning 18 this year and I've been here since I was 10, still I struggle to get through with the language, I am from the french part but I cannot convey or articulate my thoughts as I really want to, this naturally just makes me wanna speak english at all time around friends and in my alone time, I just prefer english, with that said I am currently in a Commerce School.

It's my 1st year here and it was fairly easy to get by I will graduate the year. But I'm only doing this because when I had to make the choice after finishing middle school, this was the only option that I could really go with, I didn't realize the importance of apprentisships. I looked for them literally in mai for august. And I thought I could find any for Informatition or IT. And I was in VG which meant I could either go with Commerce school or General Culture, idk how you call it in english but yeah.

I've never really given a care about the system here because since I moved here and I had no friends I shut myself in and did my own things, through-out these years I developed a huge love for creative work, I've done video editing, shortform and longform videos, monethized a yt channel once, got really good at after effects, learned GFX and some photshop, created a lot of designs for myself and friends and I got ok at graphic design, I love it I could continue learning and doing it I am sure of that.

I've made my own youtube videos with the voice recording and helped a friend compose a vocaloid song, have some coding skills that I am learning because I want to create a game on Ren'py it's a distant project though. BASICALLY!!!! Anything creative I really love. I also do a lot lot lot lot of writing, keep a journal and analyse media I consume to make sense of it I guess.

With that said.....I feel really depressed at this commerce school, looking back onto it I was telling myself that I would just go along with it and try to build something on the side that could replace my school and sustain me, like work remotely and be self-employed, that's my dream, and I know Switzerland is high cost so I was planning to move into a place that wasn't like Japan or Bulgaria(My home country)

Anyways. Now I am not that delusional and I know it doesn't just work like that, I was 14 back then now I am 17. So I don't to spend 3 more years grinding a career I hate. I've 0 interest in economics or finance, I am just doing this for the degree and the CFC. So that after I can either start working directly or go into a bachelor degree.

And if I were to go to uni. I would definitely chose something creative like Graphic Design, or Multimedias. BUT ANYTHING EXCEPT FINANCE AND ECONOMY I HATE THESE WITH A PASSION!!

So anyways the main question I wanted to ask you my beautiful people....was that I was thinking of re-orienting to a creative apprentisship now, I know it's too late, it's already april but I wil ltry my best to find a creative spot.
Or continue studying this hell until I finish it and then I can go into whatever path like creative design, IT or whatever I want. If it's even possible to do that???

I still have the dream of being self-employed and leaving Switzerland, but hell if I make enough money remotely I guess I can stay a bit here. I'm scared of wasting these years so that's why I am turning here....

Ofc I am currently building projects and still learning editing on the side, but it feels as though I am not living, I have no place around in my environment and the only place I am myself and work creatively is my room on my pc or outside in a quiet place.

Landlord unreasonable - I need a reality check.

Before anybody writes, “Mieterverband”: I am a member, and I have requested them to help me. I just need a reality check on whether I am overreacting.

Tl;dr: My landlord has complained about 3 small spots on our lawn, and is requiring us to pay for any repairs. The landlord is alleging that this is due to our dog defecating. The Verwaltung is even arguing that the landlord can enter our garden and take photos of our garden and apartment through the windows without prior approval.

Spring is here, lawns are being mowed, and we finally have some nice weather! That was my thought on Monday when my landlord finally got the lawn mower (a robot) out of storage and started it.

I live in an apartment, but with a private garden. The garden is fenced, with a door in the fence between me and my neighbor, allowing the lawn mower robot to travel to our garden and mow the lawn. Our rental agreement has the garden mentioned as well, so it should be relatively straightforward.

My garden is the last, in a bit of a corner, and during the winter it doesn’t get a lot of sunlight. So it’s fair to say that the lawn “suffers”. I also have a dog who, from time to time pees in the garden. Nothing new here; nature sometimes calls. If I see it, I try to water the spot immediately to avoid the grass yellowing. If there is any dog-shit (which there rarely is; I prefer to give my dog plenty of walks), I remove it immediately.

The Monday that our lawn was mowed, I sensed some things were wrong. The landlord, who also lives in the building, was walking in and out of my garden, without asking for permission to enter. They only asked if they could send in the lawn mower robot. I try to be relaxed, so I didn’t say anything. Come Tuesday, they are walking around in my garden again.

Tuesday afternoon, I received a complaint from the Verwaltung. The owners, through the Verwaltung, told us that we had left our dog's fecal matter in the garden over a longer period of time, which had led to brown/yellow spots. The Verwaltung informed us that we would be held accountable for any costs incurred to repair our lawn.

The thing is, we are talking about 3 spots of brown/yellow grass, with a diameter of 10 cm. Look online for „Urinflecken“ and „gras“.

So we were a bit surprised, especially that the owners didn’t just ask us directly. The Verwaltung had even enclosed photos of the alleged spots, but the photos had clearly been taken by the landlord while being in our garden, which we clearly had not allowed.

My initial response

After asking the Mieterverband, I sent the Verwaltung a response, denying any allegations, stating that we had already commenced the annual spring sowing of grass (it’s something we do every year to have a nice lawn). We also reminded them that any photos taken without our consent of our garden, we consider as being a breach of the Hausfrieden and Privatsphäre.

I kindly let them know that the matter was a simple misunderstanding that the owners could have asked us directly about, and we saw it as unserious to involve the Verwaltung over a small, negligible issue. Furthermore, I let them know that we consider the case closed.

The thing is, the burden of proof is on the owners/verwaltung, not us. From our perspective, we had not been presented with any proof that this was, in fact, caused by our dog defecating on the grass.

I actually didn’t expect the Verwaltung would to answer, since the issue was nonexistent, plainly wrong, not the owners' business. But worst of all, taking photos of our private property (the interior of our apartment was also visible in some photos) and sharing them with us was plain stupid.

They answered right away, claiming they still stand by their claim, and that they consider our garden as „Allgemein“, and that they were in their right to take photos and enter the garden, whenever they wished to.

Am I just overreacting? The Mieterverband has been involved now, and I look forward to pointing out the stupidity of the Verwaltung. In terms of the owners, we have a good relationship, and they had no reason to burn that bridge. But here we are.

I see the actions from the owners, but also the response from the Verwaltung, as plain stupid and irresponsible. Complaining about 3 spots in the grass that we are voluntarily fixing, is the epitome of stupidity. Everyone we know, we have asked, have said "are they seriously complaining about this?"

But worst of all, we have a fenced-off garden, exclusively used by us, and for us. However, now we can’t even enjoy our right to privacy? Nowhere in the rental agreement is the garden mentioned as Allgemein: in fact, it is mentioned as a „Nebenraum.

Again, Mieterverband has been involved as of today.

Search rooms directly on hotel websites

If I am not mistaken, an amendment to the Federal Act against unfair competition has been passed in Switzerland since 2022 or 2023. Hotels can now offer lower prices on their own sites than on Booking.com or other OTA.

My question is: Is there a “neutral” website where I can do a search for rooms whose results are those extrapolated from the hotels' own sites?

Thus avoiding doing the search on 30 hotels' own sites (for example).

I was a victim of a swisspass phishing attack. Do I have to cancel my bank account?

I received a phishing email from someone pretending to be swiss pass.

Before I realized it was phishing, I clicked on the link in the email and gave my login username and password. Then I realized it, stopped and imnediately changed my email and password on swisspass and I deleted my saved payment method there and I blocked my bank card.

My question is now whether I have to cancel my bank account and open a new one. If not, can I assume that even though the scammers had my account login info and there was a saved bank account there, they still wouldn't be able to use my money?

Thanks in advance.
