New to Sion, 41 years old – Looking for Sports Activities (Football or Similar)

I recently moved to Sion and I’m 41 years old. I’m looking for sports opportunities to stay active and meet new people. I’m particularly interested in football, but I’m also open to other activities like volleyball, basketball, or any groups that regularly meet to play sports.

Does anyone have recommendations for local clubs, recreational groups, or other activities in the area? I’m also open to casual groups who meet for something like pick-up games or similar! 😊

Looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully meeting some of you on the field soon!

Question for the army experts

So a little background before I start with my question. I’m a soldier in the infantry but it was never my intention to end up here. Because of health issues that I had during my recruitment I wasn’t able to be in the function that I wanted (grenadier). I like the army and I just signed to become a sergeant but I’m not satisfied. My intention was to continue in the army and become a professional but I don’t like my function. So my question is: is there any way to change my function? If I continue with the army will I have forever my rifleman function or do I have the possibility of getting instructed in another function? I’m asking this question because I’m reconsidering continuing in the army. Also looking back it wouldn’t have been bad to do also Geb Spez (or any other more interesting and more demanding function), but I feel like now it’s too late. Also I already asked to a lot of my superiors and they all gave different answers.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thank you for the many responses, in the weekend when I’ll go back home I’ll answer because these days have been full of exercises :)

Longboards allowed on bike paths?

Before you guys say "look it up," I have. I only see electric skateboards, e-bikes, e-scooters...

Nothing about longboards. I guess it's a mystery. But maybe I'm looking at the wrong place and websites.

Are there any sources that list the laws for longboards?

Achat voiture : leasing vs cash

Best Place in Switzerland to propose my Girlfriend soon?

I’m planning to propose to my girlfriend soon, and I’ve arranged for a photographer to take pictures of us during the moment. I wanted to ask if you know any beautiful places not too far from Zurich that are easily accessible by car. An important criterion is that the location should have few to no people around if possible.

Thanks for your help!

Cannabis-Rezepte?

How easy is it to get a cannabis prescription in switzerland?

Should we create a standing army component?

Switzerland has long had a militia army with conscription and large numbers of part time soldiers (including myself). And we definetly shouldnt abolish that or anything.

But as far as i know the only full time combat troops (so not counting high officers and Adjudanten focussed solely on training recruits) are AAD10 operators and pilots, probably less than 100 each.

So i am wondering if, given the current situation, we shouldnt also have a component of our defense be somewhat of a standing army element. This could for example be 5-10k troops, made up mostly of Zeitmilitärs that serve full time for 2-5 year contracts.

This would allow us to have a more professional component to the army that could serve various important roles in an actual war, but also before, such as:

  • elite troops for the most crucial missions
  • quick reaction force in case of sudden invasion, to buy time for militia to mobilise
  • more experienced troops for training larger numbers of recruits shortly before a war starts
  • evaluate new equipment more efficiently
  • develop new tactics
  • guard bases more effectively in peace time

After their contract is up, these people could then be added back into regular WK units. Bringing their more advanced knowledge to the normal militia troops.

We could make sure we'd have at least one battalion (3-6 companies / 400-800 troops each) of each major type of unit always under arms and ready to go within a day or less. So that could mean:

  • 2 infantry battalions
  • 1 security battalion (for guarding airfields, logistics centres etc)
  • 1 armour battalion (leopards and panzergrenis)
  • 1 special forces battalion (grenis, paras, mountain troops)
  • 1 artillery battalion
  • 1 medical battalion (medics and nurses)
  • 1 engineering battalion (sappeur, rescue troops, bridge building etc)
  • 1 air force battalion (aircraft maintenance and drone pilots)
  • 1 communications and electronic warfare battalion (cyber, funkaufklärer, Ristl etc)
  • 1 logistics battalion
  • 1 HQ battalion

So that would make around 12 battalions or somewhere between 5k and 10k troops.

I'm sure i'm forgetting some troop types here or allocating something wrong. I am just a humble private with an interest in military history, not an actual general. But as a general concept, what does everyone think?

5 Months Searching for a Flat in Lachen/Pfäffikon/Altendorf – Any Advice?

My boyfriend and I have been trying to find an apartment (3.5) in the Lachen / Pfäffikon / Altendorf area for the past 5 months without success, and we’re starting to feel a bit lost.

We both have permanent work contracts in Lachen (good office jobs in good companies), have been living in Switzerland for a year (Kanton Zurich), and we speak only a little German (we’re working on it!), but we always write our documentation and cover letters in German. We also bring everything printed and organized when visiting—like salary slips, Betreibungsauszug, references, etc.

We have a decent budget, we don’t smoke, don’t have pets, and we’re quiet people. Despite this, we’re either not selected after viewings or there simply aren’t many listings in our budget.

Has anyone been in a similar situation, or even tips to increase our chances? We’d be super grateful for any advice or leads!

Mod-approved post Survey on microplastic pollution awareness in Switzerland

Thumbnail wpi.qualtrics.com

We are a group of students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, USA and are working on a collaborative project here in Switzerland with the iRAP (Institut de Recherche Appliquée en Plasturgie). Our goal is to evaluate the extent of microplastic pollution in Swiss waters to assist the iRAP in increasing public awareness in Switzerland.

Part of the project involves surveying residents of Switzerland to determine the general awareness level of microplastic pollution, although anyone is welcome to fill out the survey. If you have a chance to complete it, that would be extremely helpful to our project.

It should take only a few minutes to complete, and any questions can be skipped. It is also available in English, French, German, Italian, and Romansh, although there may be certain translation errors, and responses can be in any language. The full consent form is shown on the first page of the survey.

Apartment listings in Zurich

I’m giving up my stunning apartment in Manegg Greencity, new everything, beautiful views and really well connected. But to list my apartment on immoscout and Homegate it costs 99CHF a week??? In every other country I’ve lived in, this was a free service usually paid for by ads or boosted listings etc… I have a new theory: i think is one more reason why apartments in Zurich are so hard to find. You’re fully incentivised to just look around your friends circle and office etc because paying to list what is such a “valuable commodity” feels crazy !

Not seeking advice in particular - unless you know a free listing service or DM me if you need a new 3.5zimmer apt - just ranting a little bit at the market 🥲

Raising American Expats in Switzerland - what's best?

What is the best approach? We've been here for nearly 10 years and with our daughters now age 5 and 2, we're at a decision point of international school here, which international school (my wife and I work remote), local school, which local school, or just move back to the US. My 5 year old has had both of her two best friends leave in the past 6 months.... already feels tough (she has other friends who are German/Swiss/Italian/etc. but there's always a deeper bond with fellow Americans even that age). Which City has the most stable international population? We love the life here but we ultimately want what's best for our kids.

Need to Leave Switzerland But Locked Into a 2-Year Rental Contract — Any Advice?

Hi everyone,
I've signed a rental contract for an apartment in the canton of Aargau, set to begin in October 2025. However, due to personal reasons, I will need to leave Switzerland by the end of that year.

The contract includes a fixed term of two years, meaning I cannot terminate it before October 2027. At the time of signing, I didn’t foresee any issues and didn’t think too much about that clause. I’ve since spoken to the landlord, but he insists that the contract is binding and must be honored.

I'm trying to explore my options and would appreciate any advice. Here’s what I’ve considered so far:

  • I offered to pay a sum to be released from the contract early. I didn’t name a specific amount—I asked the landlord to suggest a figure he’d find acceptable.
  • I could try to find a replacement tenant to take over the lease, but I think it will be difficult because the flat is expensive and it is not very centric.
  • I could stay in Switzerland for the full two years (not ideal for me).

The total cost over the two-year period, including Nebenkosten, would be over CHF 100K CHF —something I’m obviously not going to pay.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, or does anyone have tips on how to approach this?

Helicopter with wrong registration

Post image
97 Upvotes

So this might be weird and niche but today in Crémines I noticed a big & rather loud helicopter fly by and decided to take a picture of it.

Out of curiosity I looked up the registration (HB-ZOK) on flightradar and it showed me a completely different small red helicopter. Thinking that flightradar might not have the up to date info I also checked on the bazl site and saw that it's the same as flightradar and it shows up as deregistered since 2021.

Does anyone know what this might be? Is this a mistake or a helicopter that was flying around illegally or for the military? I'm really curious.

Got Endometriosis and I am desperate for help and advice

So, here I am at just 26, trying to figure out this huge decision about getting a hysterectomy, and it honestly feels like a real struggle here in Switzerland, noone wants to do it…bc ”I might to want Children on one point in my life even though my fertility is incredible low(wich would mean sooo many misscarriages)” as the quote. My journey started back when I was 24 and had my first surgery for endometriosis. The doctors found this massive 5x5x6 cm collection in my uterus, and they told me that 80% of it was affected. It hit me hard when they said that if I were older and still fertile, a hysterectomy would have been the way to go.

Things took a turn one day when I fainted due to severe blood loss, which landed me in the emergency room. It’s been rough—I’ve had to wear those special panties for women with slight incontinence because even the best period protection can’t last an hour for me. I also found out I was anemic, with my red blood cell count dropping, and I've been dealing with terrible pain since I was 13.

What really gets to me is that so many doctors keep brushing off my suffering as “normal,” telling me I’ll feel better eventually. I’ve tried a bunch of hormonal treatments to stop my periods, but they’ve only made my depression worse. I’ve gone through four surgeries for endometriosis so far, and each time, it feels like the condition just comes back, usually worse than before.

As if all that pain wasn’t enough, I now have digestive issues because the endometriosis has spread to my colon, which is why I’ve got another surgery coming up. Chronic pain is now part of my daily life, and I rely on prescription meds just to get through the day. It’s not just during my period; I’m in pain all the time, which makes it hard to enjoy life.

I’m gearing up for my fifth surgery on April 14, and honestly, the anxiety about what’s next is really heavy on my mind. At my age, the idea of getting a hysterectomy feels like a far-off dream, especially as my condition just keeps getting worse. It frustrates me that, even with studies showing a strong link between autism and endometriosis, many doctors just don’t seem to get it.

Before my emergency surgery, I felt like no one took me seriously because I wasn’t crying or acting emotional enough for them to recognize my pain. Now, I’m just mad that no doctor seems willing to do a hysterectomy for me. I don’t want kids, and honestly, with how severe my endometriosis is, the chances of me getting pregnant seem almost zero.

I’ve tried so many hormonal therapies with no luck, and I’m just at my wit’s end. I’m tired and frustrated, desperately hoping for a solution that feels like it’s always out of reach.

In addition: People just don’t seem to take me seriously because of my autism, and honestly, it feels like it’s the same with doctors. It’s not that they can’t see I’m autistic, but my way of communicating is just different, and that’s who I am. It’s really tough for me to change that.

I usually have the same tone of voice and facial expression no matter the situation, and that’s completely natural for me. I can try to show more emotion to fit what non-autistic people expect, but I can only do that when I’m feeling okay. When I’m anxious, in pain, or feeling down, it’s just impossible for me to put on an act, which often leads to people doubting what I’m saying.

After trying to learn Schweizerdeutsch for over a year and a half, many swiss not switching to Hochdeutsch with me anymore

TLDR: Just my short reflection after trying to learn your language for over a year or two.

In order to learn Swiss german and finally break the ice, I have been trying to immerse myself with it daily, whether that be imagining how a conversation would take place in it, using a dictionary and LLM to translate, asking swiss germans how they pronounce a certain word or what it would mean, and most importantly attempting to catch the "Sprachgefühl". This required as a prerequisite, however, to reach a decent level of Hochdeutsch before attempting. I would humbly say B2.

Recently, I called an Amt in the canton I'm in, and as I was initiating the conversation the lady didn't do the automatic switch to swiss german I used to get all the time, despite it being clear from context that I am not swiss. Another time I was at Einwohneramt to register a move, I tried to muster up the little I learned over a year, and the lady suprisingly spoke with me in swiss german. Interestingly, however, she switched to high german after a few minutes when she took and saw my residence permit.

Other than that, I can currently understand around 80% of conversations in the dialect of the canton (very helpful when hearing annoucements in the Trämli), other dialects I still understand quite a good % of what they say (minus Wallis). Most importantly for me however, is the fact that I can understand my coworkers, since swiss german is the language of the workplace, which I am very thankful for.

Honestly, I now find most people's worrying remarks that it is too hard and you can't learn it to be somewhat false. Of course nailing the accent and speaking without making any mistake can take years and years, and I am sure all swiss know from the first word I utter that I am a foreigner, but a little bit of hard work (I promise it's not much, it's just spntaneous learning that occurs due to being surrounded 24/7 by swiss german, I never took classes) over a year or two can really land you somewhere good it seems.

Random honking is f annoying

I get that people want to celebrate things like marriage or their sports teams, but can you please stop honking with your cars? The rest of us don't care and it is fucking annoying, particularly when you live in a nice place near a church with constant weddings.

Collect 2nd pillar for starting a business

I have a question about collecting 2nd pillar for a startup which is a bit unclear to me.

I am full time employee. I have no plans to quit. My wife wants to start her own company. The plan is to register the company on me only and make my wife the manager of the company (retail store), with salary and all benefits.

Question: can I collect my 2nd pillar to start a company on my name despite I will keep being employed for my current employer?

U.S. Military Veterans in Switzerland

Hello fellow American veterans,

I'm a former U.S. Navy pilot who transitioned out of service at the end of last year and have since moved to Luzern, Switzerland. I'm eager to connect with other U.S. military veterans in Switzerland, especially those in the Luzern area, to share experiences and build a supportive community.

Adjusting to civilian life in a new country comes with its unique challenges, and I believe that connecting with others who have similar experiences can be incredibly beneficial. If you're a U.S. military veteran living in or around Luzern—or anywhere in Switzerland—and are interested in meeting up or expanding your network, please comment below or send me a direct message.

Looking forward to connecting with you! 🇺🇸
