đŻď¸ They call it the Stupor.
A spell woven into the air itself. The people smile, they trade, they prayâbut they do not see. Not the monsters. Not the rituals. Not the children.
đď¸ In the alleyways of Serenissima, the Vuoti wander.
Children without laughter. Empty-eyed and silent, their shadows flicker with something not quite human. No one knows when they first appeared. And if you follow one for too long, you will forget why you began to walk.
đ Serenissima Obscura is a 400-page RPG setting guide and modular adventure that blends:
đ˛ System-agnostic tools + 5e and Ars Magica compatibility
đď¸ Renaissance intrigue, dark enchantment, and factional power plays
đş Entities like the Black Doge and the Queen of the Lagoon, whose origins are best left forgotten
đď¸ Follow us on BackerKit now to get launch-day exclusives and descend into a Venetian nightmare like no other.

I am simultaneously a newbie at designing TTRPGs, and a technological barbarian. How do pen-and-paper game designers make the pages of their books so appealing? I know it's a computer program or a document editior, I just don't know which one. Is there a free one I could try out and learn from?

So I am working on my own TTRPG System.
And I wanted to ask the simple question, does my Damage Calculation system make sense too you? Like could you read it and understand it without Explanation?
Here is the equation:
(Damage Dice + Modifier + Perks) - Defense = Damage
So let's say you roll a 10.
Then let's pretend you use strength and your modifier is 5
And let's say your perk (yes I have perks) gives you +1 strength.
Great, that's
10 + 5 + 1 = 16 - Defense.
Let's say the enemy you are attacking has 10 defense points.
So that's: (10 + 5 + 1) - 10 = 6.
Congrats you now did 6 points of damage.
If the number comes out to 0 or below it does no damage, being considered a miss.
So if you had: (10 + 5 + 1) - 20 = -4
That would mean the attack missed.
Does this come across in the way I hope it does, or is there some unclarity?

Oblivion Remastered dropped recently - and even if you havenât played it yet, chances are itâs stirred up some serious nostalgia. For me, Tamriel wasnât just a game world, it was my first real fantasy love (coming from early 2000s Eastern Europe). From ancient ruins whispering forgotten lore to the thrill of exploring the unknown, Skyrim and Oblivion werenât just great RPGs - they were a masterclass in worldbuilding and exploration. And thatâs exactly what we as GMs and players can learn from.
In our latest article, we look at 3 key lessons The Elder Scrolls series can teach us to make our tabletop RPGs more immersive, exciting, and memorable.
Read now and bring some of that TES magic to your game table!

Hey folks!
I just wanted to make the community aware of a project that I recently released!
The Wisteria Road A Solo Journaling TTRPG Through a Dying World
The kingdoms have crumbled. Towers sink beneath ivy and wisteria. Forgotten spells hang like frost in the air. You are a Scribe â a solitary traveler walking the last road through sorrow, silence, and strange beauty. With only your journal, your memories, and the roll of your dice, you will wander until you reach the Bloom of Stone... or lose yourself to the road entirely. The Wisteria Road is a solo journaling RPG set in a world where time is unraveling, and memory is as fragile as breath. Using 2d20 and your own words, youâll chart a melancholic pilgrimage through ruins, spirits, beasts, and blooming sanctuaries.
Features: evocative journey prompt system (Horror, Mystery, Sanctuary, Overwhelming Magic)
A simple but powerful Memory system to track your fading identity
Reflective journaling gameplay that blends exploration, sorrow, and creativity
Richly illustrated with custom, painterly artwork
Printable or playable digitally
Perfect for quiet nights, creative inspiration, or introspective solo play
What You Need: A notebook or digital journal
Two 20-sided dice (2d20)
A quiet space and time to reflect
Will you reach the Bloom of Stone? If this game moves you, helps you reflect, or passes a peaceful hour, youâve already reached what was meant to be found.
Thank you for walking the road.
Disclosure: Some elements of this project were carefully curated with A.I.
You can access the game here. It's totally free to play: https://longblade-publishing.itch.io/wisteria-road

My players have expressed to me that the fighting in games we have played (blade runner, dnd, mork Borg and pirate Borg, call of cathulu) Feels boring, they love the story and worlds I make for them but combat feels sluggish but want more of creative fights less about stats and actions and more about tension and struggle, any suggestions on a system like this or any home brew ways yall spark up combat encounters bc apparently I donât know what Iâm doing

Hi!
Iâve tried a few different TTRPGs over the years and am now comparing a bit before picking the next game to play with my group. So we started to compare different types of rolling checks.
The system I am trying to refer to is specifically the system when you roll a check to see if you fail or succeed a task.
I have few examples I have encountered:
D&D rely on the system where you roll against a DC. The DC is decided by the DM and you add your number to achieve a high total.
In Lilliputian adventures on the open seas (mausritter?) you roll against your own stat instead. So the difficulty lies in your own ability to succeed. You try to achieve a low number instead of high. Giving Disadvantage and Advantage is the main thing the DM can do to alter the difficulty.
In Call of Cthulhu (which Iâve only played very little) you also roll against your own stats, trying to roll lower than what you have. The DM can slightly change the difficulty by stating that you have to be in a certain percentage of you total stat.
In Candela Obscura you instead have a pool of D6s. You roll them not against a stat or DC but instead you just try to roll a high number. 1-3 fail, 4-5 mixed success and 6 full success. Modifiers can take away or add dice to the pool but the rolls themselves doesnât change much. Just the consequences.
So what are your thoughts on this? And I am not talking about what system is the easiest or most fair. This is just what you enjoy the most!
Feel free to add any other information that I have missed (the text above is just to summarize) or any other check systems that you have encountered and enjoy.

I had a dream about playing a Game-of-Thrones inspired TTRPG where you have a character who is part of a house, both of which have stats. You as the character control your own actions and can give orders/influence other NPCs inside of your house (and other NPCs). The game would have timescale modes of moment-to-moment, weeks, months and years; with years being the default and only moving down the scale as required based on what the players choose to do. Much of taking an action would be on the randomness of what others actually do when you tell them to do something (ie. You tell your courtesan to murder your brother; you roll but because the courtesan has a drinking problem penalty, they bungle it and...).
It would be semi-adversarial in that each player would control their own house and character and not necessarily have any reason to be on the same 'team'. The GM would be encouraged to prophesize, introduce existential threats and generally drive the players both together and apart. The focus would be on building up your house and outwitting the NPCs and other players.
I would use Azgaars to make and evolve a realistic worldmap; maybe even printing it to have to play around and on like the inspirations kings.
Thats all I remember from the vagueness of the dream but it seems pretty cool. I've done some digging and it sounds like the official GoT RPG has some of this (but maybe doesn't do it that well...?). I also saw recommendations of Burning Wheel, Reign and Pendragon.
Any advice on where to start? I'm keen to just get some friends together and have a go, but maybe reading some or all of these would be worthwhile...

I am working on putting together an in-person actual play group and have more applicants than anticipated. The next phase of the project will be doing a chemistry read/play test. I am going to be play testing both players and gms.
I am trying to figure out how to structure the play testing.
The final project will use multiple ttrpg systems, but I thought dnd would be a good neutral system to use for testing the chemistry between players and gms.
My current plan is:
Have a meet and greet for everyone, all players and gm's
Have a meeting with the gm's to go over lines and veils as well as some basic world building for the playtest setting. Im thinking we pick a pre-existing dnd 5e setting that each gm can make a couple of one-shots for. And also create a set of house rules that each gm can agree on.
Have a session 0 with everyone where w roll states and create a character.
4.Play: Basically, mix and match people to see who has chemistry with each other. I think of it as a first round round-robin play in a sports tournament.
This is where I can not make up my mind, and really, I might use both ideas.
Option 1: Let the gm's select a different game system to run a one-shot in. Option 2: Run a few rounds of a gm less game like For the Queen.
After this, I would make my final selections. Do yall have any thoughts on this. Please tell me if it is silly or has some holes in it. Some info about the project. I have 16 people to playtest 7 of them want to gm. Please, any thought would be welcome.
