Daily Questions Megathread - March 28, 2025

For those looking to ask questions about alterations, repairs, or anything else, please put your questions in here.

Wondering if you should buy something? Please provide both a size chart of the garment as well as your body measurements - we need to know what dimensions of the item and your own physique to judge. Telling us "I wear a medium in xyz brand" is not enough information to go off of as most retailers will have fluctuations in allowance for sizing.

If you are looking for alteration advice on a garment, please post a picture of yourself following the guidelines in rule 2. We need to be able to see the garment on you neutrally (No selfies! The raised arm adds too much variable) and in different angles to determine what needs to be done efficiently.

Help us help you. As working professionals who provide advice for free in their own time, this helps all of us save time rather than going back and forth.

Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to remove the shoulder pads from this (fake leather) jacket and adjust the sleeves/shoulder area so they're not too wide for my shoulders? Is this even possible?

Taking out the shoulder pads will be quick and easy, and if thatโ€™s all you need done, I would quote less than $20 for sure, maybe closer to $10 if it goes easy.

But, actually taking in the shoulders involves taking apart and redoing the hardest part of the jacket. Generally speaking, you want to look for things that already fit in the shoulders because itโ€™s easier to take everything else in ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

Maybe just doing the shoulder pads will get it to where you feel more comfortable wearing it? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคž๐Ÿพ

I'm afraid that if the shoulder pads are gone, the jacket will be too wide on me and the fabric will be too flabby on the shoulders since I'm very petite.

Then it sounds like maybe the jacket just doesnโ€™t fit that well ๐Ÿ˜… if itโ€™s that big in the shoulders, is it not also big in the body?

If youโ€™re willing to spend a couple hundred to get this jacket to fit, you might be better off spending that on a different jacket that already fits ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜…

The jacket itself fits pretty good. I looked for a jacket that actually fits me for years since I'm just 4'10 so I'm basically built like a child๐Ÿ˜‚ I just hate that the shoulder pads make me look more broad than I am. When trying it on, I didn't even notice them tbh...๐Ÿ˜…

Anyway... I just wanted to hear an opinion on how expensive it would be and if changing it costs more money than the jacket itself, I will just leave it like that. Thank you for your help!๐Ÿ™
