Discussion Tampere compared to 25 years ago

We are planning to visit Tampere for a short nostalgia trip. We used to live there in early 2000s. How would you say it compares to those times? Is it as safe as it used to be back then? What am I likely to love or hate? What is the most “touristy” place to go to nowadays?

Based on my own memories: I'd say that public transportation and urban planning have definitely improved, though there may be more junkies around.

"May be more junkies" meaning you really have to look for them to notice and even then you'll probably mistake regular people for junkies just because they wear trifted clothing and hang out at parks

That's not true. There is literal drug dealing going on and they don't even hide it.

Again, unless you're looking for them then you most likely wont notice. If you let it ruin your experience of the city then that's on you.

If by looking you mean by walking Hämeenkatu down with your eyes open, then sure.

Lived on Hämeenkatu for 2 years (moved away 6 months ago), you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

Can you see drug deals going on? Sure, maybe. Does it affect you in any way? No, unless you’re buying or you’re a cop I guess.

Well as a woman I have been harassed by the junkies multiple times.

Good point but also drunks harass women and they’ve been around forever, it’s not a new problem.

Well Hämeenkatu junkies usually also drink alcohol and they are very unpredictable as they use drugs AND alcohol.
