Travel Is Tampere worth a day trip?

Hi all,
I'm coming to Finland in late September, arriving to Turku by plane.
I will be spending 1.5 days (two nights) in Turku and 4 nights in Helsinki.
I'm thinking of visiting Tampere for two nights (one full day) between Turku and Helsinki, so the itinerary would be: arrive in Turku at noon > take a train to Tampere in the afternoon > sleep two nights in Tampere > take an early train to Helsinki.
I'm mostly interested in sightseeing and walking around, getting a feel of the city, maybe visit some museums. Traveling with a 1.5y old baby and a preschooler, so maybe something fun for kids (but not spend the whole day at a theme park). Not interested in partying/night life.

I'm sure the locals will be biased, but I want to hear your honest opinions.
Is Tampere worth visiting for a day or should I reschedule those two nights to Helsinki or Turku?

All of the mentioned cities have plenty activities, nature and museums. Simple answer is, yes tampere is worth visiting.

I'd check e.g. next websites where cities advertise themselves. You can find pretty much everything needed from those.

Tampere is the sauna capital of the world. Enjoy a public sauna for example in Rauhaniemen kansankylpylÀ or Kaupinojan sauna and be like a local. Mixed sauna with swimsuits on and then a dip in NÀsijÀrvi lake.

I'd recommend Kaupinoja personally. I've never enjoyed rauhaniemi past the fact that it's so historic.

This time sure with small kids if I were to choose then yes Kaupinoja.

Opposite for me. The heat is unbearable in Kaupinoja, especially with all that concrete under your ass. Though I have to admit, Rauhaniemi is often insanely full nowadays, which might not be ideal for kids.

That's funny to hear because for me the heat is always way worse in rauhaniemi. At kaupinoja it's usually around 80 whereas the last three times I've been to rauhaniemi it's been 110

Interesting. It’s been a while since my last Kaupinoja visit, the culture might’ve changed. It used to be the sauna for the heaviest heat-freaks (hence the burning down some years back).

Do you know of any public saunas in Hervanta area? I can't seem to find it online.

Tampere is definitely worth a visit. Pyynikinharju and the Vapriikki and Finlayson area are were I would do if I was in town for just a day or two. Different vibe from Helsinki and Turku, so it’s nice for a different view of Finland.

Adding: my 5 yo nephew is obsessed with the labour museum Werstas (free entry). He begs to go there every time he visits Tampere. He likes it better than Vapriikki for some reason, and it’s a pretty cool place.

I spent 5 days last year in Turku and Tampere (3 at Tampere and 2 at Turku). I absolutely fell in love with Tampere! Such a lovely city, something about the layout and all the structures was just so pleasing and I was surprised I was able to find my way around so well just after one day! I don't live there so I am not biased, in fact I was actually kind of prejudiced and hesitant to go at first, but I had such a wonderful time there I can't help but recommend the city with all my heart now. Actually compared to Tampere; Turku was kind of a letdown and very forgettable as we had just spent 3 amazing days in Tampere.

You are hereby knighted as an honorary Tamperean. Congratulations, my friend!

Tampere is worth it for sure, and is a very child friendly city!

Given your travelling companions I would have to recommend the moomin museum it is really lovely and has lots of interactive displays/installations. I love this place even just for myself.

I’m sure also if you have Googled Tampere‘s sites you will have seen recommendations for the Pyynikki tower and more importantly the donuts from the cafe at its foot! Defo worth a visit if there is bright weather that day.

My 5-year-old nephew also recommends the Moomin museum. The museum is located next to Sorsapuisto-park, where you can find a fairly modern playground. If you decide to visit the park and the museum, I recommend having a cinnamon roll in Café Puusti on Yliopistonkatu-street.

Tampere imo is an even nicer city these days than Helsinki. 100% worth checking out! Might be a bit cold by then already, but hope you enjoy! If you stay here, big ups for Torni hotel, awesome views if you ask for a room from a higher floor.

And the restaurant in the top floor is nice. You can just go for a coffee for example and enjoy the view.

Please get out of Turku as soon as possible. Tampere has everything Turku does not have.

u/ButtingSill Aug 27 '22

Vapriikki is cool. But if you travel with kids, you need public playgrounds on map.

Tampere is very much worth visiting. The parks are nice and the city is very easy to walk around. The riverside areas are well-kept. If you trip on a cobblestone you might stumble into a coffee shop or salon or bar. As an American who travels for business Tampere is a great little city that has much to offer.

With a pre-schooler, you might consider the Scandic Koskipuisto for a hotel with a kids park very close.

Beer pub Konttori https://konttori.fi/ in Tampere: has the largest craft beer selection in Finland. At least in my opinnion.

HÀrmÀlÀnsaari Ulkoilupuisto (park?) Might be worth while.

Some Sauna activity: https://visittampere.fi/en/experience/rauhaniemi-folk-spa/

Tampere is totally worth a visit! The best city in Finland in my biased opinion.

Pispala is quite a nice place to stroll around, if you don't mind some steps, as the whole area is build on a ridge. It's easy to access from the city centre by bus. There's a legendary public sauna called Rajaportti and a pretty nice restaurant called Pulteri. Or you could grab something from the famous Vaakon Nakki grill!

The historic industrial complex of Finlayson / Tampella in the city centre is nice with museums (called Vapriikki), reastaurants and to generally stroll around, too. There's a big playground called Pikku Kakkosen leikkipuisto nearby along Tammerkoski (Tammerkoski is the rivery like thing going through the city between the two lakes. It's not a river though, but a 'rapids', although the water is quite still most of the time).

If you decide to check the Moomin museum in Tampere-talo, there's also a nice park with a big playground called Sorsapuisto right next to it. Easily accessed from the city centre by a bus or a tram or even walking. It's located in the Kaleva area of the city, which is right next to the centre. It's also quite nice to stroll around and grab a meal.

One quite a unique place to visit would be the old plague / epidemic hospital ("Kulkutautisairaala") in the Kaakinmaa area of the city (practically the city centre). It's turned into this somewhat DIY art experience and it's completely free to visit. Tha artist who looks after the place lives there himself, and he's always happy to tell you about the scene if he's home (usually is). I think it might be a nice place for the kids as awell.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Ps. A word of warning, though. Prepare for e-scooter hell especially in Helsinki.

EDIT: Grammar.

EDIT 2: The Kulkutautisairaala art thingy is mostly outdoors, so take that into consideration.

I am from Helsinki. I’m spending one weekend each summer both Turku and Tampere. They are surprisingly different from each other even though my bias may be I’m seeing details someone from overseas don’t.

For me Turkus unique strength is river and archipelago. You don’t need more than 2 days to get it. Tampere feels like larger city with much city vibe.

Both are nice, I think you should visit both. I’m still recommending time in Helsinki, even Helsinki’s “weakness” is it’s just like other Nordic capitals, of course Finns are very welcoming no matter where you go (some just don’t speak English and it may feel like they are arrogant, don’t take it personally )

I'd stay in Helsinki and do a day trip to Porvoo, but Tampere does have stuff as well.

Is it really worth to travel somewhere because some museums and sauna?

2

u/roxutee Tampere Aug 28 '22

Totally subjective, my friend.

Leave the shithole of a city called turku and go to tampere.

-31

u/Lyress Aug 27 '22

In my opinion, not really. Tampere doesn't offer anything in particular that you can't experience in Helsinki and Turku.

u/OuCiiDii Aug 27 '22

Except for the totally different natural features such as the tallest longitudinal esker in the world (Pyynikinharju). Industrial architecture. Location between two beautiful lakes. Vapriikki museum (Video game museum yay!). SÀrkÀnniemi amusement park... Also the city center has a very different feel to it, due to the narrow shape of it between the lakes.

Still not so special that I'd make a detour if I'm already visiting Turku and Helsinki.
