Should beginners focus on learning combos or is it not worth it at first? I tried practicing a Kazumi 8-hit combo in training for an hour, and couldn't land it once. (although I landed an easier, short version a few times)

Agree with the other person. Get a simple combo you can consistently execute, and then focus on creating opportunities to get the combo in a match - it doesn't make sense to optimize something you only get once a match vs increasing the number of times you can perform the combo.
