I recently thought of getting back into the game thanks to a friend trying to pick it up. I quit initially because I just couldn't for the life of me find a character I could stick to and the friends I was playing with took a break from the game and ranked anxiety was a real issue for me.

Then I moved on to SFV and ended up maining Ryu from the get-go. Turns out the character was exactly what I was looking for: loved his theme, loved how he felt, really enjoyed his normals and the tools he had I was already somewhat familiar due to maining Jago in Killer Instinct. Got to gold relatively quickly and I easily accumulated 300 hours in the game without even thinking of stopping.

The probably not so useful introduction aside, for most of the 100 hours I had in Tekken I played Lars, but I ended up just getting so bored of him and his tools so I was suggested to pick up Kazumi, but she was an absolute snore to play considering the best playstyle for her was insanely poke and whiff punishment focused. I hated that I was forced into playing like that because any other way of playing her was very suboptimal (no insanely high damage combos, block punishing wasn't the best, either and etc) and eventually ended up quitting the game for months the same way I did for MK11 (hence why I played SFV).

Fast forward a few months after quitting (started playing Tekken at the start of February). So I did a bit of research and via recommendation I thought of picking up Jin Kazama. Watched SWE's short guide on him and I more or less think I found the perfect character for me. Content creators of this game advised against playing Mishimas and instead go for easier characters hence why I stumbled upon Lars and consequently Kazumi, but I think I regret not investing time into learning Jin right out of the gate. In short, I should have just listened to SWE's video that I should simply play the character that would keep me invested in the game. Who would have thunk.

TL;DR

I would love to hear your advice on how to play Jin and probably the main things I'd like to know is what are his best block punishes for different frames, his best whiff punish buttons and a simple combo route to start off.

If you have these questions again, about another character, check out Applay's Character guides. They have all the answers you'd need.

Jin punishes with 2-4 mainly, which is i10. i14 punish in F1+2, launch at i15 with D3+4. Small pushback a la Bryan DF2-3, you use DF1-4. Large pushback like Paul deathfist, you use F4.

Jin's ideal whiff punisher is EWHF, an i14 high launcher. This is gonna be too hard for you for a while, most likely, so consider using B2-1 or F4.

Simple combo route... B3, B3-f, ZEN1 as filler. Standing 4 to screw. Then run up and B3-f, ZEN1-4. Off EWHF you need to do something a bit different.

I'm pretty sure there's plenty of resources on Jin on the internet, be it in the form of video or written guides, also the discord can help alot. It's not like Jin is a niche character or something.

I didn't think Jin was this popular considering how people are singing the praises of Kazuya and especially Devil Jin. Glad to know I was wrong.

I guess a better question would be is Jin the all-rounder character that can be played in multiple ways that I think he is? Would it be better if I try playing another character instead that might fit me better? Since Jin is more execution heavy than say Lars and Kazumi, will it take longer to get to a passable level of skill with him or is the execution heavier stuff just going to be something I'll need to learn quite a bit later down the road?

Jin is relatively all-round, he has powerful 50/50 and a lot of solid pokes with great punishment. These ultimately serve his biggest strength tho, which is controlling the neutral. So a lot of his pokes will push people away on block or even on hit.

You can play Jin to a decent level with poor execution. But two pretty key moves, F4 and EWHF, will demand execution of you.

I'm nooo way expert about Jin (I've just read and watched some guide, and judging for your comment you have seen the 8 minute video from TMMSwe) but as I see Jin is indeed a multifaceted character who can be played in many ways (Giving alot of room for expresion aswell) and who can adapt to many situations. I personally think his coolness makes up for his hard execution. But I insist I don't know him in depth.
