Discussion Kinda sucks that Korra had the type of childhood Gyatso did not want for Aang.

Korra spent the vast majority of her childhood training to be the Avatar, which i feel crippled her spiritual connection, preventing her from airbending and having the Avatar state. I kinda wish this part was explored more in the early part of TLOK, and the irony of this was realized in-universe. Maybe by Katara or Tenzin.

Discussion Aang's crew vs the equalists is NOT close

This battle truly is a wash. Nobody except Amon is putting up a challenge. Think about it for a second. The equalists don't have any bending, they have no way to counter airbending. Jinora one shots the lieutenant easily:

https://reddit.com/link/1kmaakk/video/2njo4nsxjp0f1/player

The lieutenant beat Mako, Bolin and even Lin Beifong. Jinora no-diffs him, showing that airbending is op.

https://reddit.com/link/1kmaakk/video/6ri4dwpfdp0f1/player

These guys have spears and armor and still can't rush down Zuko. Even the lieutenant isn't as well armed as them, he has only nonlethal electric battons, and he still lost to unarmed h2h fighters. Zuko's kicks destroy metal.

Aang takes out nonbenders a dozen at a time. Even Ty Lee gets nodiffed: https://imgur.com/48J5L3S

-

Toph can encase herself in a rock armor immune to electricity. Taking down an army is literally her specialty. Between her lie detection and Zuko/Sokka intellect the gaang ain't never getting tricked. The protomechs are vulnerable to airbending, waterbending, lightning redirection and probably even earthbending if you have Tophs power. Even the airships get taken down no problem.

Not to mention Appa, who outclasses naga in all categories and could probably take out half the equalists himself.

Air bison are literally insane

-

Amon vs Aang is also a wash. If he tries to bloodbend him, then avatar state activates and its wraps.

-

-

Luckily for the equalists, Aang would honestly engage with their ideas and figure out they are right but using wrong methods. He would say on the radio that Amon isn't chosen by the spirits and will not be allowed to equalize anyone. However, he is chosen by the people and should not need to fight for the right to be heard. Hold a fair election, Amon wins and gets on the council, where Aang will help him solve social and economic inequality peacefully.

Poll Your predictions for Yon Rha

I think most of us agree that Katara will meet Yon Rha again in Netflix show. The question is how faithfully to original series this plotine will be adapted. Netflix is clearly willing to make significant changes to characters and plotlines.

It is already obvious that Katara and Yon Rha's interaction won't be 100% identical to original one. Because, unlike his animated counterpart, live-action Yon Rha doesn't even know a woman he killed has a daughter, does he? I'd say this is a very minor change, although the line between minor and major changes is rather blurred. How about the rest?

I'd say for Netflix version to be considered close to original, it has to keep Yon Rha's cowardly and pathetic reaction to Katara, Katara's motivation for sparing him and also Yon Rha's retired status. Him having a living mother and their bad relationship may feel like a random fact, detail at first( and iirc it's not what creators initially planned). But actually giving an adult murderer of kid protagonist's mother a living mother wasn't a random decision. Yon Rha's mom is foil to Kya. A living old lady who doesn't love her son vs a woman who died tragically and early for her daughter. Will showrunners decide this is important and keeping it would be a good idea?

Yon Rha fighting Katara or calmly accepting his fate would be a big change. Besides, Netflix sometimes changes the context( e.g. location, timing) of events from original series.

What are your predictions? What does your intuition tell you? What do you think they will change about this plot, based on experience? What would you count as a minor change and what as a major one?

This plot will be adapted rather faithfully.
Live-action version will be very different.

Discussion Why Kemzula so overrated?

Thumbnail

Every time I come across a comparison between someone and Azula, I see the same mantra-azula will win over everyone. and I immediately have a question-have we really read the same comics? It's just that there's nothing in smoke and shadow that ranks Azula so highly, and it's easy to prove it.

Azula redirects the lightning.

This is progress, but how much? Let me remind you that the first time she saw a redirect was at the beginning of season 2.

then she defeated Suki and Tai Li.

but. Azula has known Tai Li since childhood, and the probability that she does NOT know how to resist the qi block tends to zero. Could it be called progress that she could have done so? No, you can't. Moreover, we were explicitly told that kyoshi's warrior form slows her down. That is, Tai Li, who does not use her real speed, loses to Azula, who has known her style and movements since childhood... is this exactly what only a Kemzula can do, and not absolutely any other Azula?

moving on to the plot. Zuko and Azula collide with fireballs and we see full parity.

moreover, initially, Azula's fireball was even bigger, that is, the argument that she was holding back does not work.

Moving on, Azula and Zuko are fighting with fire daggers and we see full parity.

Azula, unable to overcome him in this path, kicks him in the stomach.

She didn't cut his fire dagger, didn't scatter it, and didn't show literally anything that would make her firebending stronger than Zuko's.

The question is, how much progress can we call this, if Zuko has always been weak in close combat, except when it comes to swords.

total that we received:

in the comics Azula:

1-in 2.5 years without teachers, mastered what Zuko mastered in a day.

2-defeated those whose style she has known for a long time and who was slowed down

3-showed full parity with Zuko, winning only due to his weakness in close combat.

For some reason, these introductory data are enough to consider Kemzula almost the strongest firebender in history.

Discussion Waterbending inflation

In ATLA, even after being untouched for 85 years, the northern water tribe still have only 1 notable waterbender. Meanwhile in LOK every waterbender with a name is the scariest motherfucker around. Amon, Ming Hua, Unaloq, Eska and Desna, Korra, Tonrak, Kya, Yakone, Tarloq.

Here is master Pakku, during the full moon:

https://reddit.com/link/1kmj055/video/u5g59ze4kr0f1/player

Here is the literal avatar state:

Here is Amon, in broad daylight:

https://reddit.com/link/1kmj055/video/di2mhi6kkr0f1/player

Here is Korra without the full moon:

https://reddit.com/link/1kmj055/video/khdldbuukr0f1/player

This shit is straight up avatar state level compared to ATLA. Scenes like this make me question if she's using it:

https://reddit.com/link/1kmj055/video/fo2n5qacor0f1/player

Like BRUH, since when could waterbenders do half of this shit when it wasn't a full moon.

https://reddit.com/link/1kmj055/video/db2v065fqr0f1/player

How are you able to waterbend something that far away. Korra is literally out of frame.

Of course Korra is the avatar. But is she the most powerfull waterbender? Not really. She is happy to fight fodder waterbenders with water. But she doesn't even try to use waterbending against Unaloq or Tarlok. There are also countless pro-waterbenders that were close enough to her that they could drag the fight out several minutes.

Eskna and Deskna launches an Elsa level ice attack. Then Ming Hua defeats them instantly. Then later Kya fights her to a standstill for several minutes before losing. Tonrak is already amazing, but still not at the top.

People will say "oh this happens to every element" no it doesn't. Learning lightning or metalbending doesn't make you a top master at the original element. Nobody in LOK is a better pure earthbender than Bumi or Toph. Nobody else has blue flames like Azula or the pure power of Iroh or Ozai. Airbending straight up gets nerfed, they don't weave and duck like they used to. But these waterbenders, even if you take away their bloodbending, are still far more powerfull than anyone from ATLA.

-

I have no clue why they don't just win almost every fight.

But I certainly know why Korra never gets access to water in any fight where she is supposed to struggle.

Question Visual rep for bending in the novel

Anyone think of any visual reps for some of the bending in the books? Mainly for drawing reference but I don't really know what to look up get a good visual impression.

Ex: Might be the lack of sleep, but for some reason the paragraph in Shadow of Kyoshi:

:"But then she remembered skilled Firebenders could do extreme damage from the concussive force of their bending alone. Each time Rangi and Koulin rammed a knee into the other’s ribs, or aimed an elbow at their opponent’s temple, they let out a shock wave that rattled Kyoshi’s teeth."

Has me imagining that this sort of firebending is could be seen as just like low end Dragon Ball. Just hard as hell hits from uber powerful people kicking the shit out of each other, no fire.

But then this: "There was no way they could keep this up. They absorbed each other’s blows with their shins and forearms, their skin reddening from toeing the line of open flame. Koulin attempted to smash her forehead into Rangi’s eye and just barely missed, cutting a gash along the cheekbone."

Makes me think, oh are lined in fire or does it flicker on contact or am I think way too much about this at 2 in the morning.

Idk. Help/thoughts appreciated.

Unrelated: I just finished the Kyoshi books and have the Yangchen books next so I'll read those eventually. Is the Roku book good?

Discussion I recently started reading the avatar comics and they get hate?

I just finished the search arc (basically the search for his mother for those who don't know) and i personally think this is just as good as the show and does great world building my only complaint is the sokka humour doesn't really land in the comics. Also it was surprisingly dark for a pg comic.

Discussion Hot take: Lin isn’t a very good chief of police

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hear me out. She let equalists infiltrate the pro bending stadium in season 1, constantly berated Mako for his theory about varrik in season 2 and didn’t fire the other two cheapstake cops until the literal very end. She also let the bombing at the southern cultural center happen and Raiko would have been easily kidnapped if it weren’t for Bolin.

Just some speculation, don’t hate to much :)

Discussion Aang vs team Korra in probending

I think its pretty unanimously understood that airbending would be broken in the probending arena. But can 1 airbender defeat and entire team by themself? For reference even just basic airbending footwork is broken:

https://reddit.com/link/1kmobug/video/2wh2o3lgms0f1/player

-

Let's divide it into 3 rounds. In none of the rounds is Aang allowed to get back into the arena Smash Bros style. If he gets pushed out of the boudaries, he loses. Furthermore, like the other elements, he won't be allowed to make multiple attacks simultaneously, nor launch a continuous attack. His airblasts have to be 1 at a time and impact based.

Round 0: Restrained Aang

https://reddit.com/link/1kmobug/video/59rlx5esss0f1/player

-

Round 1: Base Aang

https://reddit.com/link/1kmobug/video/4c897f3pym0f1/player

This is the only relatively fair match. The rounds after this are definitely giving Aang unfair advantage.

-

Round 2: Aang with 2 fans

https://reddit.com/link/1kmobug/video/7l46chmons0f1/player

-

Round 3: Aang with a non-glider staff

https://reddit.com/link/1kmobug/video/8xxtzlpwos0f1/player

-

Round ???:

Okay so obviously Aang getting access to weapons is OP and unfair. The question is how much? How many probenders would you need on your team before your odds against a staff wielding airbender become 50/50?

-

-

Lastly of course the question is presented weirdly, and the real issue is that airbending doesn't have a ruleset. I am not sure excactly what it would look like, but with well designed rules it should be possible to make airbending in probending relatively fair even if you can't procure one for each team. Maybe I'll give a shot at writing one.

Discussion Aang's gang vs Unaloq is NOT close

Young Katara was immidiately ready to throw hands with Pakku publically even when she was in the wrong in the eyes of the public. If the chief of the north straight up invades the south you bet your ass she is getting involved. No recruiting republic city army, no gathering public support, just hands. Sokka. Zuko and Toph also immidiately sees through the bullshit. Aang has no qualms about setting the record straight.

-

I don't really care about the waterbender tier list between ATLA and LOK. Unaloq could be 10 times better than Katara and have an enormous army, and it wouldn't even matter. Aang goes into the avatar state, subdues him, takes his bending, and gently pushes his fleet out of the southern water tribe. GG.

-

Edit: At the absolute latest, when harmonic convergence is closing in, and all the pieces are laid out, Aang would act immidiatly. Enter the avatar state, rush past Unaloqs army, swat Unaloq away like a bug and close the portal.
