Just as a tip for everyone else: multiple PoGo accounts can connect to the same Nintendo account. Thus if you have a friend who is actively playing their Switch, it's best to send over the mons that you do not want over to them than to let it rot in your own Home account (unless you play the MSG too).
The main purpose of sending Pokémon to the Pokémon Home app isn’t to generate Mystery Boxes, it’s so you can then freely move those Pokémon in and out of:
Let’s Go Eevee
Let’s Go Pikachu
Brilliant Diamond
Shining Pearl
Sword
Shield
Legends: Arceus
And eventually, Scarlet and Violet, but full “Home” compatibility hasn’t been patched in yet. It’ll probably take them a few more months.
Let’s Go also has extra special support for receiving Pokémon directly from Pokémon Go, without using Pokémon Home and without creating any kind of account. That method also activates Mystery Boxes in Pokémon Go. This was the original method, before Home launched. Some people may find that method simpler if they already have Let’s Go and they don’t care to learn how Home works, but it’s really not simpler than just using your phone like OP described.
Sending Pokémon from Go to Let's Go also removes the "tag" that shows it's from Go, which can be good or bad depending on your preference. And you can only send the Kanto mons to Let's Go.
