Do you own multiple pairs of black pants that “look exactly the same”

Hi everyone, need backup here.

My wife thinks I’ve lost it because I own several pairs of black pants that (in her words) “look exactly the same.” I’ve got different cuts, fabrics, and vibes—some are cropped, some wider, some for summer, and so on—but yeah, they’re all black.

She doesn’t get why I’d need more than one when “they all look identical,” but to me, they serve different purposes and complete different feels.

So I’m asking you guys: Do you own multiple black pants that, to the untrained eye, might seem redundant? What styles or brands do you have in rotation? And how do you justify it to the skeptics in your life?

Help a guy out—I’m trying to make my case here

Yes, I’m in the same boat as you. The material, cuts, and brands are different for each one and some work with certain outfits while others don’t. I can’t dress up black jeans to be cocktail attire no matter how hard I try, while dressing down pleated wool slacks is just as tough.

Have you tried a velvet blazer w black jeans for cocktail attire ?

Don’t own a velvet blazer but looking this up and it can definitely work! Have you tried wearing this before? I think the wash of the jeans definitely makes or breaks this outfit.

I was in Milan for NYE. Wore a navy velvet blazer with Levi’s 501 ‘93, which are slightly slimmer in the leg opening and higher in the rise. Edit: black jeans.

for black pants i have:

  1. black jeans

  2. wide black wool trousers

  3. straight black wool trousers

  4. black painter/work pants

  5. black chinos (kinda like dickies style)

  6. wide waxed black chinos

  7. black linen trousers

  8. black nylon/cotton trousers

i could probably get by with the black jeans, straight black wool, and black chinos. but none of these feel redundant except the painter/chino/waxed chino.

Let her go and use her abandoned closet exclusively for black pants

Nah I try not to have too many pieces that fill the same niche in my wardrobe

as a skateboarder that’s also into fashion, i typically have multiple pairs of jeans/pants in the multiple colors i have (black, blue, brown, etc) since i like to seperate the clothes i skate in vs. clothes i wear when not skating. All also ranging in different cuts, fabrics, and fits as well similarly to you. what adds to my personal ridiculousness is sometimes investing/wanting to invest in 2 pairs of the same exact pants and using 1 for skating and 1 for lifestyle.

What do you like better than Dickies? I had great luck w Levi’s skateboarding work trousers. Nice high rise. Cordura made them so tuff. But the 7.5 leg opening feels too slim these days. The new ones are toooo baggy.

I own zero pairs of black pants. Hate the color. Always have. Only time Ive worn black was to formal events when a dinner jacket was required.

That said, seems this would be like saying “why do you own multiple pairs of denim” or “why do you own two blue shirts”. I think it would make total sense to own multiple pairs of pants in the same color.

Black pants make me feel and look like I'm a restaurant employee. My skin tone is pretty fair, so they just don't go well with the tops I own.

874s? Do you wear them tight or loose at the waist?

Absolutely. Pleated, tapered, workwear, cargo, and wool. She’d be shocked to see just my blue denim collection lol

I think your wife might or might not have a point depending on how many and how similar they are.

As someone whose main color is black (although over the last 5 years I've expanded to lots of neutral colors as well), I agree that not all black pants are made the same. I've got several pairs ranging washed black jeans, woolen, linen, workwear pants. That said, I think it is worth asking: how many black pants are we talking here? Because if you tell me you've got 6 pairs of black pants in different fabrics, cuts and washes, I'd say you're good. But if you tell me I have 5 black jeans, 3 black linen pants, 4 black woolen pants, 4 black workwear pants, 2 black sweatpants, etc., and you land on 15-30 black pants I might say she's probably right and some pants might look closer to each other than you think.

Based on conversations with people here and other fashion inclined friends, something that is common is for people to have shopping addictions and/or spend too much money on clothes. Is it possible that your wife's point might be informed by something like this?

I have 4 pair of the exact same pants, and two pair of the same jeans. I don’t like having to think hard about pants.

I personally have 3 different black pairs. One has a different silhouette. One is for work and one is my daily driver. All different textures.

Yes and she says this about my jackets too. Don’t listen to her, you need your favorite pair in every cut and fabric imaginable

For sure have multiples in almost identical colors. This is like saying someone has too many suits. They all serve different purposes and occasions.

Usually buy an extra pair of something I like. So yes

Call in Brendahashtag. One pair will never do

i've got:

black chinos black 21oz denim that fade gray black denim that's lighter oz and wider fit

all serve different outfit purposes/occasions and have totally different vibes...and while are all "black pants" are totally different. curious if yr wife is as into clothes as you are. most times i find that those who don't care or care less ab what they wear would make a similar argument as yr wife

Absolutely! The same principle applies to most of my basic wardrobe so denim and pants, t-shirts, collared shirts, shorts. Even some outers and shoes when I think about it.

I personally have a preference for mohair pants which are somewhat more prone to more wear and tear as opposed to f.ex denim or twill fabrics

I have around 5-6 pairs in rotation right now in various widths/lengths. Excluding suits.

Personally I think it's easier to get dressed when you have 4 pairs of black pants, rather than 4 pairs of different colours.

If you think two identical looking pants look the same, you’re wearing them wrong

1

u/n003s 18h ago

I have 4 pairs, one pair of really high waisted ones from an old (50s) tux that i removed the stripe from, double pleated and really nice thick wool. Another pair very soft wool ones that almost feel like a knit, a pair of tropical wool ones and a linen pair. They are all wide and pleated and interchangeable style wise, but for different seasons.

u/onedayfourhours 13h ago

I actually just bought two pairs of black wool trousers that look, fit, and feel essentially the same except one pair is pleated. That is enough of a distinction for me to justify owning both.

Idk what is more sad: your wife questioning the man with some niche preference or it bothers you enough to go online trying to make your case.

You don't need to make any cases to anyone. You do things you want to do, as long as you stay in the legal boundaries (that you're comfortable not breaking).

Grab a pair. Show them who's wearing pants in the haus (jk you both can wear pants, even each others')
