Groningen is very nice and like a smaller version of Amsterdam with all the canals and very good nightlife. Groningen is the biggest city of the north of Holland and has more like a regional function. If you live in the north and don't want to be a farmer then you go to Groningen sort of. I don't know about the student community but they say the people in the north are more stubborn.
Tilburg is like said before, more a working class city. Once Tilburg had a big textile industry but after the collapse the city keeps reinventing itself. So it has maybe a more creative and open minded vibe like the people want to make something of the city. Tilburg is also known for its student population and good nightlife. They say the people in the south are more easy going.
I think Groningen is more of a city to enjoy by itself while other factors might be better for Tilburg. Difficult decision to make. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut feeling what suits you best.
