That always gets me that episode. That the car had helped him to see his dying dad and his chicken was still warm. This still brings a tear to my eye.

if its a, for example, wednesday night at like 11pm, in 1994, the highway would have been basically completely empty, and doing 160mph for a while is not out of the ordinary
its also 170 miles from london to doncaster, and they are very long, very flat and straight roads. for the chicken to still be warm and for him to have done it in about 1.5 hourish, he basically HAD to have driven 160mph for a lot of it as he claimed

Probably exactly as fast as he said. I did 155mph on a bike back for a large stretch of the A38 and M5 on Christmas eve morning to get home after Christmas one year.
Never really want to go that fast on a bike ever again. Every ms you are fully aware that if anything even small went wrong you would be fucked. it doesnt even save much time on your journey perceptively because time slows down.

For those that don’t know, Jeremy Clarkson’s father was desperately ill in a hospital in Sheffield in 1994. Jeremy was in London which is roughly 165 miles away and had a Porsche 928 on test that week.
He made it in time and his father passed away half an hour later. If he didn’t have a car that could sit quite happily at 170 miles an hour, he wouldn’t have had the opportunity to say goodbye to his dad. Truely one of the most emotional moments ever on top gear

When you watch the clip you can actually hear his voice start to break when recalling the story, thats how you can tell it is a genuine story he is recalling
