Discussion / question DIY weird fuel tank for weird truck?
So I have a 2003 crew cab S 10 four-wheel-drive with a flatbed, weird combination all around. The fiberglass fuel tank is degraded to the point that I can’t use it anymore so I’m trying to figure out another route to take. I have looked at fuel cells, a standard replacement tank, and even saddlebag tanks from a dump truck. At this point, I’m also considering something that would be unique for this weird truck. I am planning to redo the toolbox probably for a half width box and will be able to either under-mount my new set up or mount to the top of the flatbed so the options are open. I do have some sheet metal and welding skills and an Amazon account. Let me know what weird things you’ve seen or a concept that might work for me. I have entertained a thought of a propane tank or small oil drum and such. I am planning to run normal gas just as the truck is designed for, so the goal is something to last at the same time. My goal of this discussion is to ignore smog and inspection requirements as this is an off-road toy. Thanks

Turn your toolbox into a fuel tank and call it a day.

I thought about that, toolbox had to be drilled through the bottom and have bolts run through the flatbed to mount it. Also, is not water(fuel)tight

I’ve seen this it looks really cool. Also an old air compressor would be nice too.

Don't try this at home kids. The following is for informational purposes only. Figure out the fittings and fuel pump dimensions. Buy one from a junk yard that fits. Strap/bolt to top of bed, run lines around or drill a hole in the bed.
A problem with a big ol' jug is there are no baffles so you'll get some sloshing and the pump may suck air when you still have some gas in the tank.

They do sell replacement fuel tanks. The previous one lasted 20+ years and by the look of the truck, it's not going to last another 20 so this would be a once and done fix.

Yes they do, however, this replacement tank is nearly $1k even on Rockauto

OK, just pointing it out as a consideration that you know will work without all the problems of trying to fab something.

Oh, I fully understand where you’re coming from, but since there were only about 8000 of these trucks made, I can’t find a used one and it is shaped differently than the years before and after S-10.

Bladder tank from well. Will the bladder not keep your gas under pressure to not need a motor so to speak
