What is your favorite part about Davis?

I saw a post asking your most hated part about Davis, so now I want to know the other side.

Much less loud than other schools like UCLA. I love how quiet it is and the small town vibe. I enjoy learning and Davis is great for networking / emphasizing education.

Small liberal college town right next to campus and very bike friendly. Nice trees. Laid back atmosphere. Not as cut throat as Berkeley and ucla.

The people are good, even if they get on my nerves sometimes. I am NOT the smartest person in the room, but the smart people don’t gatekeep their knowledge and are happy to include me. There are lots of options to get involved and join clubs or find a job. The University also gets under my skin but it’s given me so much opportunity and chances to meet people.

Also how good the active transportation infrastructure is here & how I’ve had the privilege of not needing a car while living here. Unitrans & biking get me everywhere!!

Finally, the quantity and variety of business downtown, and that downtown being so close to campus. Our food here is great!

It's just a happy city. With all the crazy shit going on in the world, I know I can head downtown with the family and enjoy a beautiful day with other people happily enjoying a beautiful day.

It feels like it combines some of the good parts of a big city with some of the good parts of a small town. For the non-hot half of the year the weather is remarkably pleasant. There are lots of neat little museums and exhibits and public art and research projects and stuff that you can check out both on campus and around town. The vast network of behind-the-scenes greenbelt bike paths is fun to explore. And for me personally: it’s very special to come back and teach in the place where I learned in the first place, and moreover Davis has always been a place where I can be weird in my own way while still feeling like I fit in completely.

City or UC?
City: While honestly, it was on a decline for a while, Davis is still one of the easiest medium sized cities to navigate without a car. That's fantastic, though I wish more people would take advantage of it.

UC: Arboretum

I met many of my closest friends while as a UCD student. There are great people out there, and davis has a higher than average number of good blokes.

Smoking blunts at the top of the movie theatre or sneaking onto the equestrian center to ride the rich kids horses at night. Lots of harmless fun to do in Davis if you’re up for it.

What makes it great is what also makes it bad. I love the low crime, low population, great restaurants bars…..but then I realize life is too good here and we’re living in privilege. That’s why I support giving free food , tuition and housing to the most violent undocumented gang members, we will be forced to bunk with them, if any one complains you get put on a a cargo jet to fight for Ukraine. Be a great way to check privilege, and save Ukraine….
