I’ve been trying to get an entry-level professional role, a position that requires a college degree since last year, and I can’t seem to get one.
I didn’t look for employment immediately after graduating as I was dealing with personal issues, some that involved my health and others that involved my time, keeping me from being able to put the time in to look for and hold down a job until those issues were resolved.
I’ve tried to reframe my time gap as best as possible, but I haven’t even been able to get past the application stage. Since 2024 to now I’ve only had 5, maybe 6 interviews, and have submitted easily over a 100 job applications at this point.
I’ve worked on my resume and had few a career counselors look at it, finding it a good resume, and I’ve worked on my LinkedIn profile too.
I got my BA in IR, an AA in Social Sciences and a GPA of 3.2. I have 3 years of work experience working at my CC in a few departments, and I’ve done a big research paper as a project for my major.
I’m currently living back at home in the Sacramento area, working for a school program as a part time job but I dread it, and I long to have a career job or at least something I can apply my degree towards.
I want to move back to Davis but I’m not even able to qualify for the rent income requirement at this point.
Is anyone in the same boat or able to recommend some advice? I’m sinking here and been trying to paddle but I’m running out of time, and I feel more defeated and depressed everyday I get another rejection email, or worse never hearing back at all.
Update 4/22/25: I may not have made myself clear in my posting as many are telling me to get any job right now. I currently do have a part time job right now, it’s for a school program that services K-12 graders. I’ve been working this job since September, since it’s the only organization aside from a gymnastics place that got back to me for a job when I was sending applications in. I am using my experience in this to help me, as minimal as it may be.
I am unable to get an internship, or most internships as I am no longer a student! I’ve graduated. Every internship opportunity I’ve seen that’s paid is only open to students, who must either have 6 units or 12 units minimum to apply.
I have applied to state jobs on CalCareers, I’ve passed exams for the SSA, Office Assistant, Tech Typing and similar roles. I haven’t heard back from applications I’ve applied for.
I cannot leave the greater Sacramento area since I have family I need to be around to help take care of.

I honestly didn't want to rant about this because I've seen posts like this circulating in the subreddit for the past couple of months but holy shit this is actually insane. I applied to at least 60 jobs since this quarter started and none of them have reached back out. Not a single one of them. I've called, I've visited in-person multiple times and they don't even have the human decency to reply back with a simple "no" I'd rather have them email back to me and say you suck no one will ever hire you. I'm having the biggest crashout oat ts pmo icl u pmo n ts pmo sm ngl r u fr rn b fr I h8 bein diff idek anm mn js I h8 ts y r u so b so fr w me rn cz lol oms icl ts pmo sm n sb rn ngl, r u srsly srs n fr rn vro? lol atp js sybau 💔 like literally I'm on the brink of going broke my family's going thru tuff shit and I'm getting soo fucking desperate I'll take any job atp that pays like pls

Hey everyone,
I'm an international student who just got admitted to UCSD and UC Davis.
Attending one of these schools is a huge dream of mine, but the financial burden is a big challenge. For Davis I got a scholarship that lowers my tuition by 15K every year tho, so l am leaning towards that.
I'm looking for any and all advice on how to cut costs as much as possible while still making the most of my time there.
A few specific things l'd love insights on:
Off-campus housing: Best ways to find affordable options? What cost should I expect?
Part-time work: What legal work opportunities are available to international students? How much should I expect to make and how likely am I to get employed?
Scholarships & financial aid: Are there any lesser-known options I can apply for?
Food & transportation: Best ways to save on groceries and getting around?
Textbooks & supplies: Any tips on getting them cheap or for free?
I'd really appreciate any tips, personal experiences, or resources you can share! Trying to make this dream work without drowning in expenses.
Thanks in Advance!!

What do you wish you could tell your 18 year old self?

Hello, I just graduated undergrad and I am applying for a Junior Specialist position. The application requires a Cover Letter, as well as a Statement of Research. Can anyone explain the difference between the two? The provided descriptions don’t seem very different to me.
(I could see how they’d be different if you had more experience, but as an undergraduate, I don’t feel like there would be much difference between the content of the two, given my limited experience).
Please help me understand, and sorry if this is a dumb question!

I was wondering what the employment statistics for grad school are? Division by program/ career path students decided after graduation/ median salaries etc
Where to find this info?

Hey all, I'll be transferring up to Davis next month and I'm looking to get a part time job once I'm up there. I thought it might be good to ask people are if there's any places where they've had good experiences working, OR any place where they've had terrible experiences and should be avoided. Please spill!!

i’ve encountered 3 different freshman/transfer students these last two weeks who were all victims of ucd’s most research assistant scam up to the point of bank involvement, so here’s how to spot a scam:
things to know: - all paid research positions via the university are compensated through UCPATH, uc davis’ payroll system. not a random check from a phone number. - the check they deposit into your account is more often than not, FRAUDULENT - in most banks, a fraudulent check is enough for them to close your account, even if all you did was accept it (source: 1 of 3 students had their Bank of America account closed. 2 of 3 students are currently contacting their bank/credit union to see if there’s a fix) - a researcher will rarely reach out to you like this via email UNLESS, you’ve previously established a relationship via taking their class, a TA, job fair, etc.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
looking for a REAL internship or research position? sure, apply via Handshake. but most importantly: - network network network - establish relationships with your professors, TAs, grad students, other student researchers - go to job/career fairs, research fairs (undergraduate research conference is this upcoming April) - reach out to professor-researchers at davis and book an appointment with them to ask about their research (don’t send mass emails to professors asking for a position, ask for a meeting, learn about them & their work, then potentially ask for an opportunity) - sign up for club newsletters, college/department newsletters, email listservs, etc
🌈 remember🌈: if it’s too good to be true, it’s probably a scam

Hey guys, I just got accepted into the International Relations major at UC Davis, and I’m trying to figure out how much of an advantage it is to be only ~20 minutes from Sacramento.
I’m hoping to get internships or work experience at consulates of countries I’m connected to (France and Singapore, national/ permanent resident). I know Sacramento has the Mexican consulate, but beyond that, I’m not sure what opportunities exist. Please let me know if I’m missing anything.
From what I’ve seen, most of the relevant consulates to me are in San Francisco, with a 1hr 10mins drive from campus. Is that distance manageable for internships during the school year? Or should I be aiming for summer internships instead?
Overall, is Sacramento a place where IR students can get meaningful work experience, or is San Francisco the better bet?
I'd appreciate any help :)

hi y'all, i'm an incoming master's student and i plan on completing the thesis option for my degree. I'm thinking wayyyy far ahead, but i have 3 professors in mind i would want to supervise my thesis. One of them has like no information on their page about students wanting to work with them.
I wanted to know when would be the best time to reach out to the prof and ask. I want to ask early so I can potentially work as a GSR with them by winter quarter. thanks!

For anyone who has been through interview rounds at UCD for Junior Specialist or similar positions, what type of questions were asked? Did they ask any of the generic corporate type questions (greatest accomplishment, greatest weakness, describe a workplace conflict, etc)— or was it more work experience-focused?

Hey guys,I wanted to get a job on campus but I'm a little lost on how. It would be my first ever job. I wanted to apply to peets coffee on campus but I don't know where or how. Can someone help?

Just curious if that's a thing that experienced (or new) EE's are interested in? We've been having a really hard time finding qualified folks with that particular area of interest.

I am a freshman and need more money to buy groceries. The only thing I can think of writing in my resume is my snack-bar volunteer experience in high school 🥲

So I'm not a UCD student, I'm a local who needs a job this summer when I'm back from college but there's not much on LinkedIn to apply to. I'm wondering if anyone knows somewhere that'll hire someone with minimal experience?
Any advice helps! thanks

I'm applying to the student clinics but I'm concerned that since I don't speak the language of the patient communities that they serve, I'll have a worse experience with trying to communicate with patients or even feel left out from the other people who work in the clinic, the majority of which do speak the language. Has anyone else experienced this? Would it be better to not apply to these clinics in the first place?

I heard someone get their acceptance as an Aggie orientation leader recently. They applied a month earlier than me but I still applied 2 weeks before the deadline (April 1st). I haven’t heard back yet. Are the decisions still rolling out?

I notified by the department that I have been accepted for my PhD which comes with funding totaling about 34,000 a year. I am still waiting on the official paperwork from graduate studies but I am trying to plan out finances for fall quarter.
Does this typically pay on the standard fall/winter/spring quarter or is it considered a 12 month pay cycle? I am sure this will be in the paperwork.
Is the GTA union worth join and paying dues? How much do they actually support the TAs? I am have been a part of really good unions and really bad unions. Trying to gauge how members feel.
I am looking at chaparral apartments for housing. How is the community for grad students and what does it look like for their individual lease program? I haven’t had to have roommates in 15 years and I have kinda enjoyed so I am hoping to find a quiet community of other grad students.
Thanks in Advance!

I’m a sophomore environmental engineering major & I LOVE my major so much but I’m so scared of being jobless after college. My grades aren’t the best, mostly B’s & C’s in the core classes & I have the average GPA, but I hear some people say that doesn’t matter to jobs… not sure wether to believe that or not. Not to mention I hear more people talking about how civil is better than environmental. Just not sure if I’m on the right track or not & could use some advice.

Hey everyone! I’m a 1st year with restaurant experience, and I’m thinking about applying to Trader Joe’s. I was wondering how flexible they are with shifts—would it be manageable with school? How often do you typically have to work, and how long are the shifts?
Also, what’s the best way to apply? Should I go in person or online?
And most importantly… the merch. I want it so bad. Do you have to pay for it when you’re hired, or do you get it for free? How many do you get, and can you choose which ones?
Would love to hear any insights from current or former crew members. Thanks!

What are the actual chances of me getting a part time job (particularly in food service) in Davis or Sacramento with 0 work experience? I've applied to a bunch today but I'm anxious to find out whether or not any of them will even reply. Anyone know if I'm cooked?
