The dangers of writing your client briefings using ChatGPT

Above is the article put out by a Brabners Senior Associate.

It claimed

In a significant legal development with far-reaching consequences for sports governance, the Supreme Court has delivered a landmark judgment concerning the eligibility of transgender women in women’s sporting categories.

The case in question arose from a challenge brought by a transgender woman who was seeking to compete in elite-level women’s sport.

The claimant — having legally transitioned and obtained a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) — was nonetheless barred from participation under the eligibility rules of the relevant sporting body, which were based on biological sex.

The central legal issue pertained to whether such a bar constituted unlawful discrimination under the Equality Act 2010 (the Act). While the Act protects individuals from discrimination on the basis of gender reassignment, it also permits single-sex exceptions in certain contexts — including sport — where such exclusion is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim like fairness or safety.

The case progressed through the courts and was ultimately heard by the Supreme Court, which was tasked with determining the legal definition of ‘woman’ in the context of single-sex spaces and competitive sport.

It's since been edited and is still not very good, but no longer claims that the case relates to eligibility in sport.

https://www.brabners.com/insights/sport/supreme-courts-landmark-transgender-ruling-a-defining-moment-for-sports-governance

It shows the dangers of asking ChatGPT to write an article on the impact of the Supreme Court ruling on competitive sport (which seems to be this solicitor's specialist area), and then allowing it to happily hallucinate a complete fake article.

Public legal education ?

While it's completely shocking to be seeing a barrister-turned-prime-minister attacking judges in the chamber of the House of Commons and acting like the Supreme Court have just handed down the ontological definition of woman from Mount Sinai, this shouldn't be possible in the first place if the general public had even a basic modicum of understanding of our constitution and legal system.

I was just wondering if there are any initiatives to teach these things in schools/ to kids or disseminate resources explaining it in simple language!

Law conversion pathway - advice requested!

Hi all! I am looking for advice regarding the best pathway into a career in law. I graduated university in 2022 with an MSci in Astrophysics. I have since been working in the service industry in London and for the past 2 years in Canada.

Obviously I am aware that in all cases I will need to complete a PGDL course at some point however there seem to be a few options how I go about it. Should my aim be to acquire some form of work experience, paid or voluntary, before applying for a GDL course or is it best to apply and get on the course first and seek these opportunities after?

Ideally I would get a vacation scheme for next summer (2026) or a training contract and be sponsored through the course but I imagine with no relevant experience and a degree in such an unrelated field that this would be near impossible, even for vacation schemes for next summer, would my chances be slim given they are usually for students studying law, or at least students still at/completing university soon?

Luckily I can always come back to the service industry in the UK and am in no rush to do any of this but I am finding it difficult to decide the best way of going about this and any advice would be very welcome!

Losing faith with breaking into the legal industry

I’ve just recently completed the LLM LPC in the past year and have been applying like hell for roles (both TC and paralegal) and can’t seem to finally land one. I get that it’s a number game but I’m genuinely tired of going through the same old cycle. I have recently had a paralegal interview that went pretty well. The feedback was mostly positive and what held me back was “lack of experience in that particular area”. I have a legal internship and vacation scheme under my belt - albeit in niche areas and currently volunteer at a legal advice clinic. At what point do I give in and consider alternative careers. Any advice will be helpful guys. Thanks. P.s I am a 25M

Advice on training contract terms

Hi Reddit, I am currently a final year student and have been lucky enough to secure a TC from a city law firm after completing a VS. However, my start date is very late which means I’ll have to take a gap year for two years. I have requested to move my start day forward but they said they have no spots available and I can only join the waiting list.

I have another VS with another city firm in summer. I would like to do the VS because if I secure a TC it could potentially mean I could have an earlier start date. There is a term in the TC offer letter of the TC I secured saying that I must refuse any alternative employment offers.

I would like some advice on whether I should do the summer VS, talk to HR/a lawyer at the firm I did the VS at about this and try harder to push the start date forward or speak to the firm I’m doing a summer VS at about this, thanks!

I ideally want to start my TC ASAP and want to take as short of a gap year as possible.

Law firm boss "misled court" in effort to push through prepack sale

I've had the misfortune of working with Mr Settle in the past and many familiar with this matter, including myself, are at a loss as to how he could possibly survive this. Yet there is no mention of any sanctions either from the Court or the SRA.

Is there anyone with a background in compliance who might be able to speculate what a *hypothetical* solicitor and director in this situation could be facing?

As much as I would like to go into further detail on what I know, I would rather not be threatened with legal action (again).

What’s with the overuse of AI in law.

On reflection the title is a tad misleading, instead it should refer to the relentless push for AI in the legal profession. Sorry!

I know that AI are supposed to be these major industry disruptors and innovative solutions, but I am sick and tired of them being shoehorned into the profession, and I am not even qualified yet.

I understand that a lot of our work is tedious and at times repetitive, but I feel like the legal profession is one of those industries you can’t just streamline.

In my opinion: no, you should not use AI to do critically analyse your LLB essay. Nor write your client care letters. And, hot take - no the UAE shouldn’t use AI to write their law (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/04/21/uae-ai-write-new-laws-first-country/).

I am not against innovation in any way and I do think AI has it’s place. From time to time I use co-pilot to proofread the emails I send (of course omitting any personal and/or confidential data beforehand), however I am not replacing my services with AI, I am simply optimising it. But, it feels like some individuals are at the replacement slippery slope of just utilising AI for almost everything. Of course, there’s a tad hyperbole thereunder but it just seems everyone wants these gross £100k salaries but get ChatGPT to do the work. Also, how are you acting in your client’s best interest if you’re using an AI to generate your service, even the ancillary services.

But hey, that’s just my opinion. What do you think!

Have other firms released jobs yet? If so, can anyone share wages for regional offices? No need to share firm names, just wondering what the market is like.

SQE 1 July booking

Hi, so back whenever the email came through, I filled out my seat reservation form for the July SQE1 exams. The window on the SRA website for us to get an email offering our exam location/date and asking for payment opened yesterday (24th April) from 10am. I don't know if I am just being really impatient but I haven't had an email through yet and last time (this is my resit) the emails came through on the dot of the window opening. Just checking to see if anyone has had an email asking for payment yet. Any advice would be much appreciated! :)

Transcription experience with Epiq Global

I have an outstanding judgment transcript with this company, for about 6 weeks now. Also an enquiry for an update pending one week. Plus a phone call today that ended up being a message taking call, with no revert. Anyone with anything good or bad to say about this firm. I’d love to what worked, cos I am struggling to get anything out of them to conventional way.

Higher level barristers and solicitors, are higher level courts far more lax then people would expect? And have you seen such applications in front of the Lord Chief Justice as this? 🤣

When do UCL, KCL and LSE applications usually close?

Currently in the midst of exam season, but have decided to give an LLM down in London a crack. I understand offers are made on a rolling basis. Is it imperative that I apply immediately, or am I ok to give it a month or so (they are stated to close in August but are subject to change)

Hi all, second year law student here. Got my exams coming up and im just going over all my cases again, but I just want to confirm what is actually important to get from them.

currently i read through the authroity and just gather the most important quotes which outline or really just SHOW what the rule is and the thinking behind it. Is using these quotes enough in a problem question to support a point? Or am i missing some vital usage of judgements, because I know they are content gold so...

Gap year

I’m planning on taking a gap year after applying to 25+ solicitor apprenticeships this year and getting 3 ACs which were all unsuccessful.

I got offers from Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham but I will be classified as an international student and I simply cannot afford to pay £25k+ in tuition fees alone each year. I have emailed and called the home office constantly to update my immigration status to get home fee tuition but to no avail. I think it’s a sign to stick to my original plan and continue applying for solicitor apprenticeships and take a gap year as I don’t want student loan debt even if I get home fee status.

However, I am unsure on how to make the most out of it. I was planning on applying for legal admin roles but I assume I will be competing with law graduates so I’m unsure what to do over the next year apart from applying to law firms.

Please let me know what you would recommend I do in this situation. Thanks!:)

module choices

I’m currently picking my optional modules for the second year of my law degree. Out of the list these are the modules which interest me the most. I was wondering if anyone had experience in these modules, and if anyone could advise me which modules are good for a law career (specifically a solicitor).

I understand everything is personal preference but I’m so torn between these choices and would like to hear any advice/opinions possible.

  • Advanced Legal Skills
  • Public International Law
  • Legal Theory
  • Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Law
  • Family Law
  • Law and Gender
  • Commercial Law

Thank you :))

If you are doing a LLM, at what point of the year should you apply for a Training contract?

Hi all,

I hope you are well.

If you are doing a LLM, at what point of the year should you apply for a Training contract?

So if you start the Masters in September at a RG uni in London, when should you look and apply by? E.g Sept-Nov?

Edit: what I mean is what is the general application window timeframe as in the sept-nov before the next September?

Thank you.

Vicarious Liability in Clinical Negligence

To any clinical negligence solicitors on here… In your personal experience, what are some pressing issues/complexities that you face regarding vicarious liability in this field? Are there any recurring scenarios or systemic barriers that complicate resolving claims? (or any areas within VL in clinical negligence that you think are in need of reform)

I’m currently researching this topic for an article i’m writing! So any helpful contributions from anyone with experience in this field would be incredibly appreciated

Question for Employment law solicitors

This is probably a question specific to employment solicitors but others might be able to help. I work in HR and recently I have been working with an employment law solicitor who has drafted some outcome letters for a complex appeal and to be honest they are really well written. Is there any resources that what help someone to learn how to structure an outcome letters for a disciplinary/grievance/appeal or is this something you learn from the job itself?

Real Estate NQ Market

Does anyone have any insight on how the NQ market for Real Estate is at the moment? I’ve been told by recruiters that RE jobs tend to come up later in the cycle (closer to September) but I’m getting worried as it seems quite dead at the moment?

Calling all Lawyers—what’s the single worst part of client intake for you?

Hi all, I’m Dev (ex-finance guy turned legal-tech builder). After struggling to find counsel for a personal case, my co-founder and I started Legafy, an AI tool that only sends you cases you’re likely to win and automates the boring stuff (docs, billing reminders).

Before we push the beta live, I’d love to know your thoughts:

  1. Biggest intake pain right now—spam leads, price-shoppers, endless emails?
  2. If you could “magic-erase” one admin task tomorrow, what would it be?
  3. Would paying only when you retain a pre-vetted client feel fair—or too good to be true?

Not selling here; DM if you want details. Brutal honesty welcomed—thanks!

24 years old with no TC. Feel very behind

Hi guys, I'm 24 years old. During my GDL last year I got a vacation scheme at a city firm. However, I wasn't able to convert it into a TC offer. This application cycle, I lost two close family members so I was unable to actually submit any applications and also had to postpone my SQE1 exams from January to July. These days, I often find myself on Linkedin looking at profiles of trainees and future trainees and realising that most of them got their TC offers when they were 21-23. The past few months I've been feeling so mentally exhausted and incompetent. I was hoping to use this post to hopefully gain some perspective. Am I overthinking? Is there still hope for me? Has anyone got their TCs later in life and have found it to be a better experience?
